English and Literature

the thesis of ‘Polemic’ by Edward Abbey which is: National parks should be preserved and kept the way they are rather than altered and destroyed by human developments to make it easier for people. More info:
Abbey believed that humans were ignoring nature, putting their own wants in front of the Earth’s needs. He believed that if people wanted to enjoy natural beauty, they should enjoy it the way nature presents it rather than alter things to make it easier for themselves.
Evidence: “It is the primary responsibility of the National Park system to preserve intact and undiminished what little still remains.” (page 387)

“… that their primary duty is to serve the public, not preserve the wilds …” (page 388) Here, Abbey is expressing what he feels National Park rangers duties now entail. Their duty seems to be to please to people, the visitors of the park, rather than to please the park itself.

“I now feel entitled to make some constructive, practical, sensible proposals for the salvation of both parks and people.” (page 389-390) After this statement, Abbey proposes a list of rules he feels the National Parks should instate in order to preserve them while also serving the visitors coming to see them.

“If we could learn to love space as deeply as we are now obsessed with time, we might discover a new meaning in the phrase live like men.” (page 390)

4.    What models of states have we examined? How should we use models? Whatever model we use, what foreign policy goals/objectives have we examined which states typically pursue?

5.    What sorts of reasons have we examined for studying international relations, and in what sorts of ways may international relations be defined? Which reasons and which definition do you find most persuasive?

Placement in Advertising

This is an assessment calling for exploration of a body of theory in an academic essay. The work must show an understanding of and respect for formal academic conventions: appropriate referencing, objective style and critical debate. This should be treated as an opportunity to explore some aspect of marketing communication in relative depth, and at masters level you are expected to show both a capacity to discuss relevant ideas and the skill to articulate these in a lucid style.

2.3 Critically discuss the ethical implications arising from the use of product placement as a marketing communications tool.

You should critically assess the ethics of product placement, adding more to the existing debate. It might also be appropriate to draw conclusions based on different target audiences (ie children or adults). In order to make sound arguments, theory of ethics should be used. Your answer should also include examples of product/brand placements within movies, TV shows etc.

You should aim to include examples and illustrations within your scripts where you judge this helps to illustrate your points and when this is appropriate to support your arguments (e.g. print advertisements may be helpful in an appendix and scans or screen-grabs in the body text of the essay). Such material should be labelled and referenced according to its source, context and date.
