Computers are a valuable addition to modern education.

When seeking to prove, to argue, writers must craft the form of thesis known as a claim. Claims do manifest in work outside of argument courses, although, such as in problem-solution assignments (as students seek to prove a particular solution is best), or in even in conducting evaluation of criteria (to prove an example best fits into a given category), and asking acceptance of scholarship (as in experimental results in lab reports, writing proposals, applying for positions, etc.). Claims are highly useful for students who know how they wish to begin topical pieces, but do not know how to develop the pieces’ direction. For less-experienced writers, do consider that claims phrased as statements are far more easy to discern and develop using the following methods, rather than phrasing an intended claim as a question, followed by attempting probing and study.
Traditionally claims have fallen into five (5) categories, and as an academic piece can only have one thesis, then such befitting writing can only have a single claim (the notion of sub-claims as sub-headers is best left to another discussion). Therefore, a claim can only fit one of the following categories, and each category has its own properties and characteristics.
To utilize the following chart, identify the claim under consideration, then match the primary questions: if a majority of primary questions associated with a claim cannot be clearly answered in regards to the examined claim, then either the claim has been mis-identified, it is unclear, or it needs further elaboration.
Claims may be used in outlining a piece to be written, or during revision, by using the When Writing’s portion under each claim. However, claims may also be used for exploring structure of an argument being read and analyzed, by following the conventions within the Reading portion under each claim’s section.

*Claims of Value
Purpose: Claims of Value seek to settle moral or ethical concern, or in terms of monetary appraisal, discern the literal cost or value.
Examples:
Computers are a valuable addition to modern education.
Environmental rights are as important as human rights.
Etiquette is vital to ensure instilled morals, ethics, and underlying social structures.

Main Questions:
Is it good or bad? How good? How bad? Of what worth is it? Is it moral or immoral? Who thinks so? What do those people value? What values or ethical criteria should be used to determine its goodness or badness? Are my values different from other people’s or the author’s?
When Writing:
State the claim as a judgement or value-driven statement.
Analyze the audience’s needs and values, and appeal to them.
Use literal and figurative analogies, quotations from experts, present definitions.
Use emotional language (carefully and sparingly).
Consider applied criteria, claim with reasons, or a narrative-organizational pattern.
When Reading:
Examine for claims which make a value statement.
Look for value-based and/or motivational proofs, literal and figurative analogies, experts’ quotes, and concrete definitions.
Look for evaluative/applied criteria, narrative, and topic-driven organizational patterns.

Summarize main point from the Lost Hour

In about 500 words (250-1000), summarize the most important ideas of the reading (Lost Hour). Make sure to include as many as possible of the supporting details for each main idea.

The reading is written in an informal, popular-book style (rather than in the style of a scientific paper) and it doesnt include formal citations. For that reason, you will not be required to cite the sources for the supporting details. (I.e., you don’t have to say who did the studies, just mention what they found. Note that this is not typical of science writing. In more formal contexts, you would have to cite the studies.)

Sampling methodologies IN AUDITING

The paper should be 6-8 (double-spaced) pages long (for highest grades, closer to 8), excluding pages associated with title pages or bibliography. Please do not include an executive summary or an abstract. In other words the body of the paper should be 6-8 pages (1 inch margins – 12 pt. font – Times New Roman or Arial). The paper should be documented using an APA or MLA (in-text parenthetical) documentation style. A paperback reference for APA would be nice to have, although there are online sources of information about APA. I was put in a strange situation recently when a student told me that (although the documentation seemed to be flawed) their source came from a handout from a past class (which one?) or some particular online source (where?). So, let me say that the best source of information for documentation guidelines is:
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition,
http://www.apastyle.org/manual/index.aspx (also see tutorials to the right)
OR – For FREE (!!) at:
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
Please use one of the two resources above for additional information about the APA
Documentation style.

The paper should be substantially based on at least three articles from professional journals. Professional journals in accounting would include Accounting Horizons, Journal of Accounting Research, Strategic
Finance, The Journal of Accountancy, or something comparable. You can also use other professional journals, such as the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Management, the Journal of
Management Information Systems, or the Journal of Information Systems. The three principal journal articles referenced in the paper should be copied and turned in with the paper. In addition, feel free to include other research sources. Other important sources include professional documents at websites used formally for accounting (FASB, IASB, AAA, AICPA, etc.). You should have a minimum of five sources in total, but you may include as many as you wish. The objective of the paper, apart from the obvious coverage of the topic area, should be to INTEGRATE the information provided in the research sources.
You should not go through a page and a half or two pages continuously citing the same source. In most classes, the assigned paper is longer. I would rather sacrifice some length and emphasize a good
SYNTHESIS of the sources into a well-written, coherent document.
Remember that if the words of the author are used exactly, quote and include a parenthetical reference. If the words of the author are paraphrased, do not quote but include a parenthetical reference.

Spelling and punctuation are PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT. If you have one or two spelling or grammar errors, I’ll chalk it up to being human – no problem. If you have 5 or more spelling or grammar errors, your grade will suffer one or more (probably more) letter grade deductions. You should have several other people (pick them carefully!) proofread your paper before you hand it in. If you are concerned about the propriety of your topic, please feel free to e-mail me or call me at home. Point deductions of (5-10 each) will be made for not following other instructions above (for example – not APA, not PDF, not three sources, and for each page missing (less than six pages). If everyone follows the research paper requirements, additional learning occurs about meaningful topics and writing skills are enhanced as a part of the process.

Understanding Jane from a Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Perspective

Read the case study below, and write an essay explaining how you might understand and work with this client from both the Psychodynamic and cognitive behavioural perspectives.

Case Study
Jane is a 50 year old woman who comes to see you on the advice of her GP, who has been treating her for depression. Jane is divorced with two adult children, aged 27 and 30, and for most of her adult life has been a full-time carer for her mother who was  paralysed in a car accident, which killed her father when she was 29.
Jane’s mother died several month ago, and Jane now lives alone as her children moved away some years ago. Jane tells you that she wants to ‘get on’ with her life but is finding it extremely difficult. She would like to have a relationship, but finds it difficult to meet people and is anxious about leaving home for long periods. She would also like to restart her career as a nurse, which she gave up when she started to look after her mother, but she feels that it might be too late and worries that she is too old to retrain to meet the new practise requirements.

The case study should include;
A summary of how Jane could be understood from a Psychodynamic perspective.
A description of how a Psychodynamic counsellor might work with Jane.
A summary of how Jane could be understood from a cognitive behavioural perspective.
A description of how a cognitive behavioural counsellor might work with Jane.
Identification of the main differences between the two approaches in working with Jane.
Identification of the similarities between the two approaches in working with Jane.
Evaluation of which approach is most appropriate for working with Jane and an explanation of why?
Reference to relevant literature, linking your ideas to theory.
