Child Abuse

Child Abuse Human Rights. Students will argue about their belief and reason why the chosen issue is the greatest priority in the contemporary world. Students will explain key reasons for identifying the chosen issue as the greatest human rights priority; the criteria used in determining why their chosen particular human rights problem should take priority over others. To this end, consideration of the ethical foundations and frameworks for human rights covered in the first three weeks will be useful. In this section, students will not only identify a human rights priority but also to defend their choice using concrete ethical reasoning.

Think of this essay as a persuasive piece of work that allows you to construct your beliefs and arguments. Finally, in addition to explaining and defending your position in general, students will need to identify a specific human rights organization working on this issue that is worthy of receiving funding from Australian government and other major donors. This essay would make use of unit readings (required as well as additional sources], appropriately referring to the source in proper citation format. The essay would require a formal structure; useful guidelines are provided as a separate document on the Moodle site).

Section D: Case study (600 words for both questions)

The article below is taken from The West Australian, 12 March 2008

Debate rages over deregulation

The Premier of Western Australia (WA), Alan Carpenter, has pledged to deregulate WA’s retail trading industry if re-elected at the next State election, which has sparked intense community debate. The issue of seven-day trading looks set to become a political football after Mr Carpenter told ABC Radio that the issue would be a key Labor Party platform and that WA residents would decide the issue on polling day. Mr Carpenter said the party would go to the next election with a policy of deregulating trading hours to bring WA into the 21st century. Deregulation also has the personal backing of Opposition leader Troy Buswell; however, the opposition Liberal Party is yet to formalise official policy on the controversial issue. One online reader of The West Australian newspaper said that people working nine to five jobs were forced to pay $15 for a carton of milk and a loaf of bread at a service station because Perth went into ‘lockdown’ after 5pm. Another reader said the public should decide when they want to shop. Others described the trading hours as ‘third world’. However, there was also concern about the impact on family time of employees having to work on Sundays.
Wesfarmers’ (which owns Bunnings, Coles, Liquorland, Target, Kmart, and Office Works) chief executive Richard Goyder told a business breakfast that there would be no let up in Wesfarmers’ push for deregulated trading hours in WA, saying deregulation would ‘take’ (Perth) into the 21st century and make it a really vibrant place’.
But there remains opposition and division in the business community with WA Independent Grocers
Association opposed to deregulation. The Retail Traders Association of WA has long advocated for shopping hours to be deregulated despite a referendum held in conjunctions with the last State election which saw 60 per cent of voters reject the idea. The association’s executive director Wayne Spencer said that the issue had gone past the debate stage and freedom of choice was what consumers and retailers should have.
The WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry has produced a detailed policy paper supporting extended trading hours.

Question 4
(a) Do you think markets should decide when shops should open rather than governments? Cite an example of a market where market mechanism is better than government intervention. Support your argument with at least two journal articles.

(b) If markets are generally the most efficient way of allocating resources why are there so many restrictions on doing business in Australia? Are they all cases of market failure and/or government failure? Support your argument with at least two journal articles.

Instructional strategies that align with the CCSS unit plan as shown:

Classroom environment

The physical arrangement of the classroom can impact student academic and behavioral performance and should be structured to support instructional and behavioral expectations (Newcomer, nd). The set up of a classroom is very important to how students learn, arranging the room so that everyone can be seen is very beneficial. The arrangement of desks, learning centers, computers, materials and storage areas should be aligned to support the schedule of daily activates and to facilitate smooth transitions (Newcomer, nd). All students will be seated in a way that benefits their learning ability. Girls, boys, gifted students, and students with other needs will be put in accordance to areas that encourage the whole classroom.

Instructional strategies that align with the CCSS :

Comparison of Benefits Programs

Conduct research on three universities and compare their employee benefit programs. Compare and contrast their structures and incentives. Do the Universities offer “in-house” benefits such as free or reduced tuition, leave for conferences, or sabbaticals, or other benefits that are not dependent on an outside party? Be sure to include the relevant website links in your paper.

For this discussion post, create a matrix or chart that allows for quick comparison, and provide your additional information in paragraph form. Be sure to include the relevant website links in your paper.

Nursing

The purpose of this assignment is to explore the personal and social implications of mental illness, as well as, ethical, legal and clinical practice implications related to a mental health patient being admitted to a medical ward. Using a recovery and person-centred approach, explore the issues raised in the case study and how you can support this person during your early shift.

Case study

Students will be given a number of important documents related to this case study of a person who experiences a major mental illness. These documents will appear in the Learnonline Notice Board over the duration of the course. Students will need to access these documents in order to complete this case study.

Students are expected to use the Case Study template (available from the Learnonline environment) to complete this case study. Please read the sections on the Case Study template and ensure that you answer all sections on the template. Please also take note of the marking guide for this assessment item as this will provide some additional guidance for students.

You will be expected to analyse these documents, extract the main issues and reflect on how the information impacts on the client, the family, the case manager and how it informs your nursing care and approach. You will have opportunity to discuss these documents in your tutorial sessions or in the Learnonline environment.

Assignment Task

You are a newly registered nurse working in a large metropolitan hospital on an early shift in a busy medical ward. You have been allocated Roger to care for him as a 1:1 special in a single bed side-room. You are given the following hand-over by the night duty RN.

Roger is a 35 year old male admitted yesterday post overdose of Sodium Valproate & Seroquel, and self inflicted lacerations to both wrists. Roger has a history of Bipolar Disorder and is currently on an ITO-L1 which requires review today. Overnight Roger has had a fluctuating sensorium – has been occasionally drowsy, but at other times very restless and agitated. His conversation has had a paranoid and delusional flavour at times. Roger is confused and likely has a delirium related to the ingestion of prescribed medications.

Roger has an intravenous line of normal saline 1 litre over 8 hours – started 1 hour ago. Urinary catheter insitu which is draining well. The last ECG showed lengthening of Q-T interval and a repeat ECG is booked for 10:00 AM. TPR & BP are within normal limits – for checking 4 hourly along with neurological observations until reviewed by treating medical team.

Roger’s behaviour has not presented any significant management problems overnight in the ward. However Roger did present to the Emergency Department in a severely agitated state when a Code Black (Aggressive incident) was initiated.

Because of Roger’s fluctuating sensorium he is to be considered at risk.

The self inflicted wounds to Roger’s wrists were sutured in ED, the wound site is intact but there is some ooze from the sutire site; the dressing will need to be changed during the day. Roger is not to be given any medication unless severely agitated. The Consultation-Liaison psychiatry team are aware of Roger’s admission to the medical ward and will review him later this morning. Over the next few hours it is likely that Roger will become more alert and likely more distressed and agitated. You are advised to call for assistance if you have any concerns.

In a parting comment by the night duty RN states that she does not know why we are wasting time on looking after people who want to kill themselves; there are plenty of sick people who need hospital beds.

Following this handover you have the time to review Roger’s admission notes where you will find a number of documents which highlight past and recent concerns.

(All of these documents can be found in the Learnonline Notice Board over the duration of the course).
