Ethical Issues With an Aging Population

According to the CDC, “in the United States, the proportion of the population aged >65 years is projected to increase from 12.4% in 2000 to 19.6% in 2030,” (CDC, 2003, para. 2). Caring for this aging population is going to be one of the greatest challenges facing the health care industry. Not only will the number of individuals requiring care rise, but so will the cost. As poignantly stated by Crippen and Barnato, “unless we change the practice of medicine and reduce future costs, and explicitly address the ethical dilemmas we face, there may come a time when our kids simply cannot afford us” (2011, p. 128).

In this Discussion, you will examine the ethical issues that the United States and other nations must address when faced with the health care challenges of an aging population.

To prepare:

•Consider the ethical aspects of health care and health policy for an aging population.
•Review the Hayutin, Dietz, and Mitchell report presented in the Learning Resources. The authors pose the question, “What are the economic consequences, now and for future generations of taxpayers if we fail to adapt our policies to the changing reality of an older population?” (p. 21). Consider how you would respond to this question. In addition, reflect on the ethical decisions that arise when dispersing limited funds.
•Contemplate the impact of failing to adjust policy in accordance with the changing reality of an older population.
•Reflect on the ethical dilemmas that arise when determining expenditures on end-of-life health care.
Post by Day 3 an explanation of the ethical standards you believe should be used in determining how resources should be allocated for an aging population and end-of-life care. Then, provide an analysis of the ethical challenges related to the preparation for the provision of such health care.

Rhetoric Analysis

This is a Rhetoric Analysis essay.

For your first writing assignment, you will write a 3-4 page rhetorical analysis of a commercial. This assignment is not an merely an overview of a Captain Morgan’s ad, for example. Instead, for this paper, you will identify the major claims that an advertiser is making and will discuss how the advertiser structures those claims. Your opinion on the product is irrelevant–for now. We often have to stand back from the issues to survey the research. That is what you’re going to do in this case. In other words, you’re not going to be writing a narrative, or for/against paper, per say. Rather, your paper is going overview some one else’s arguments and identify how that argument is structured. For instance, you may (or may not) have an opinion about Captain Morgan’s rum, but you can overview the claims that the company presents in its ad. I would this paper’s topic to be on the following commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0VOM7e5Hug

Organizing the Paper:
As with all writing assignments you will be composing this semester, your rhetorical analysis should contain an introduction with a thesis, a body containing the bulk of your analysis, and a conclusion. The introduction should state which commercial you will be analyzing, the product/ company it is advertising, any relevant background information, provide a brief synopsis of the commercial, and state your thesis. The body will go into further detail in analyzing the various elements used in the commercial and explaining their significance. The conclusion of your paper may evaluate the ad’s arguments and offer your own thoughts or opinions.

Audience. As for all writings this semester, this paper will be written for your classmates and your instructor. Therefore, you need to assume that your readers have not seen the commercials you are writing about. This means that your paper will have to background and clarify the content of the commercial that you cite in your paper.

Readings. For this assignment, you will choose one commercial from those in the folder on ANGEL. If you would like to write about a different commercial, one that is not included in the folder provided, you must first send me a link to the commercial. I will look at it to make sure it will work for the assignment and then get back to you with the verdict.

Citation. For this assignment, outside research is optional; the only thing you absolutely must cite is your commercial. As The Little, Brown Handbook does not provide the citation format, I have included it here.

“Name of Commercial/Product.” Commercial. Station or website. Date accessed (day month year). .

Example: “Miller Lite Man Law: High Five.” Commercial. You Tube. 17 Nov. 2006

horror film between 1950 and 1959.

Directions

For this paper you will view a “horror” film made between 1950 and 1959. The film you will be viewing is: I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) Directed by Gene Fowler Jr. and Produced by Herman Cohen (take care to distinguish the genre from science-fiction, and support your conclusions). Within a 3-4 page essay, consider how the film reflects the genre conventions of the earlier cycle, and how those conventions have been transformed to reflect the specific concerns of the post-war period. Note if any significant changes have occurred that might signal new directions the genre may take. See if you can identify any purely visual motifs that have remained, or been modified, from the previous era. Be sure to position the film within or against the general trends of 1950s horror.
Things to keep in mind are: ambivalence toward authority (government, military, patriarchal), the nature and focus of the threat (to institutions as well as individuals), the configuration of the “monster” (especially its “otherness,” social, sexual, political). Consider issues related to reproduction and sexuality (especially female sexuality and power), distinctions between the “normal” and the “monstrous,” and attitudes toward technology and modernity.
Include references to three scholarly sources to support the points of the essay (be sure to cite appropriately). Write thoughtfully and seriously, and be sure to attribute any ideas or information found in outside sources that have may have contributed to your thinking.
The essay will be at least three (3) full pages and no more than four, double spaced, in a 12 point Times-Roman font with one inch margins on all four sides of the text. Do not justify the right margins. Indent paragraphs – do not add an extra line between them. Please include a cover page which features the title of the project (this will of course include the title of the film that is being used).

Key Performance Indicators in Alliances

Key Performance Indicators in Alliances
After an initial agreement has been reached, it is not unusual for partnerships to experience difficulties. Issues that seemed simple going into an alliance often become more complicated at the implementation stage. One partner may have expectations of the other that were not clearly spelled out to the satisfaction of each. Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) can create initial consensus, but Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in manufacturing and the service industry have set higher expectations and outcomes, and even more specific expectations with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) used for assessing actual performance. KPIs are an important means of measuring specifically targeted areas of performance that, if achieved, will help ensure that the organization fulfills its operational and strategic goals, thus helping to monitor the success of the agreements between the alliance partners.
Early in the process of negotiating KPIs with vendors, there is often a failure to get key stakeholders, such as HR, legal, internal IT, and the vendor, all together to agree on the KPI content. Using the Laurent (2008) article, “Human Resources and Recruiting Management,” to provide context, specify the causes of such failures and consider what the HR department can do to remedy these situations. Consider recommended practices in developing key performance indicators.
In a 4-page paper:
• Evaluate the importance of negotiating key performance indicators with alliance partners.
o Why are KPIs crucial to the success of alliance agreements?
o Describe how KPIs alleviate potential problems with alliance partners.
o From your research on negotiating KPIs, what types of barriers to agreements often get in the way?
? How can such barriers be removed or avoided?
• Analyze the effects of foundation accords, governance accords, and change accords on the success of a strategic alliance.
o How should the organization’s overall strategy drive the accords?
o What are the potential risks and benefits associated with each type of accord on the success strategic alliances?
o Which type of accord do you consider most important for the long-term success of the strategic alliance? Why?
