When planning client and family education encounter, several factors have to be considered for the encounter to be successful. These factors include time, frequency, personal preference, goals, motivation, and lifestyle (Gardam et al, 2010). In the encounter, time factor involves considering the maximum time available for the client, which give a guide to the number of exercises and education to be included when making the programs’ plan. Frequency on the other hand refers to number of days in which the client will be available and therefore enables correct planning of the daily programs. The personal preferences factor enables proper coordination with the clients since failure to consider their preference will affect their availability on the scheduled time (Zimmerman, 2011).

Goals are considered as the target set to be achieved from the encounter program which gives bases for the final evaluation of the progress as either having been successful or failed. Motivation plays an important role on the client side since high motivation enables the client to make efforts towards achieving the set target. The final factor to be considered is the clients’ lifestyle. This enables analysis for a slow changing program which will prevent the client from defecting upon drastic changes. Mostly, drastic changes never work properly and therefore the clients’ lifestyle gas to be considered for the correct initiatives to be applied (Jensen, 2011).

Formative, outcome and process evaluation make the whole evaluation exercise complete. Formative evaluation refers to the process of ensuring that program plans, procedures as well as the exercise is appropriately planned as suggested by Zimmerman, (2011). Problems within the process is evaluated and therefore rectified through formative evaluation. Process evaluation on the other hand helps in determining whether the programs are working towards achievement of the set goal and target. Outcome evaluation is the final evaluation process for the finished program. This outcome evaluation gives a clear implication of how well the program succeeded in achieving the set target (Jensen, 2011).

MERGER AND ACQUISITION

Mergers and Acquisitions

In the past 20 years, the information and technology industry has experienced unprecedented growth due to the revolution in the computer and internet technology (Allenstr & Njurell 2010). Communication has become as fast as the speed of light and the whole world has been reduced to a global village due to the interconnection established in the latter years (Colombage 2009). Being a revolution in the computer industry, many people and organizations have had a role to play but some organizations have had a greatly significant influence on the dynamics of computer world (Franks & Harris 1989). In the last ten years, new names of internet giants have emerged and with them great influence in the online platform. Organizations such as Facebook, twitter and Google were unknown of prior to the year 2000 and yet today they are making headlines everyday due to their contribution to the development of ICT. Services such as Pay pal, visa, MasterCard and Alipay and other online payment platforms have transformed money transfer from tiresome and time consuming manual transfer to wire transfers taking a few hours and in some cases even seconds. This has had a great influence for business and also for communication.

Just like all other businesses, the technology titans have had their share of profit making, losses, acquisitions, mergers and many others (Depamphilis 2008). In the last two to three years, major corporations have acquired smaller businesses in order to increase their clout as well as shareholding to increase profits (Vennet 1996). The ability of these business deals to convert to profits to the companies is generating a lot of debate with some analysts claiming that in most cases it is a PR stand rather than the business aspect of the transaction (Gabsi 2012 and Franks & Harris 1989). In addition, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Google get a lot of money from advertising in their News pages and other services they offer. As much as people are flocking these websites to obtain any information, the websites keep on minting money from companies and therefore the need for empire building over the platforms they have (Rhoades 1983).

By definition, mergers and acquisitions are transactions where two businesses end up being together or under the umbrella of one. In a merger, the businesses come together to form a completely new business while in acquisitions, one business takes over the other business. In an acquisition, the target company (which is taken over) becomes an extension of the parent company (Firth 1980 and Rhoades 1983).

Apple inc. is one of the companies that are known to shy away from mergers and acquisitions in recent years. The company has established a brand by itself and its hardware and software business are limited to one another. Apple manufactures software and updates for its products such as iphones, ipads, MacOS and iOS. Recently, there have been rumors that the Company is considering merging with Tesla motors but the officials have not yet confirmed. If it goes through, the merger will have opened a new page in the technology business and motor industry. Tesla motors is expected to launch its smart car very soon and it seems computer technology is slowly entrenching itself in motoring. Recently Google launched its flagship Google car which is completely technology and computer navigated.

In May 2012, Google acquired Motorola mobility in a $12.5 billion dollar transaction being one of the largest of its kind. Motor4ola being a purely android platform that is developed by Google, it was understandable why Google may decide to buy one of its own. The news was received in awe and send shockwaves across the corporate world with many of manufactures of android devises worried about the transaction. Unfortunately, the deal did not have much impact on the shares of both companies and the Motorola Mobility business kept on dwindling under stiff competition from Apple and Samsung. Two years down the line, the company sold the business entity to Lenovo in a $2.5 billion deal. Lenovo a Chinese owned technology company had acquired IBM hardware business a few years ago and helped overturn the fortunes of the company. The biggest question that analysts have is why Google would decide to sell a company it just acquired two years ago at such a staggering loss? The other question that is interesting is whether there is too much hype into these acquisitions such that the players are overlooking the business aspects of the transactions. This is because most of the acquisitions do not reflect the amount they are made to be in public eye as suggested by Franks and Harris (1989). It is also known that Google’s aim to buy Motorola was to shore up its field of patents and evade lawsuits from Apple, Samsung and other huge technology companies but the value of Motorola’s patents did not have much impact on its business.

Another recent deal was the decision of Microsoft to purchase Nokia mobile business in a similar take over like the one for Google and Motorola. One of the similarities between Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia and Google’s purchase of Motorola mobility is that, the target companies are hardware manufacturers of the software developed by the parent company. For Google, Motorola was the manufacturer of the hardware devises that work with the Android operating system while for Microsoft; Nokia was the manufacturer of hardware that uses its Windows operating system. The outcome of Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia mobile platform is still yet to be known but the fate of Nokia seems to be dwindling day by day. Contrary to Google, the Microsoft’s deal was with its greatest carrier of Window’s 8 Operating System. The move comes in hot heels after Microsoft bought Skype for a much greater deal of money. The effect to profits both at Microsoft and for Skype is not noticeable as per today. This begs a lot of people to question the logic behind companies spending huge sums of shareholders money in pursuit of greater empires (Gray 2002 and David 2013) Nokia has been a market leader in mobile phone business for a long time before the entrance of Apple’s iPhone series and Samsung’s Galaxy Smartphone series. Currently it is the most widely used mobile phone after Samsung but most of its customers are low end users who use the older models. The ability of Microsoft to transform the fate of Nokia from downward trend to business again is yet to be seen.

The latest acquisition by a major technology company is the deal between Facebook and WhatsApp. WhatsApp is the greatest online chatting service with over 400 million subscribers while Facebook is the largest social networking site with over 950 million users. Facebook has offered to purchase WhatsApp for $19 billion breaking the previous Google’s record of $12 billion for Motorola. Facebook acquisition of WhatsApp is in line with consolidating its control over the social networking platform. Having the largest online social networking site and in addition to having the largest mobile chatting platform which is expected to hit a billion users in a short time gives the organization a great influence. With Google controlling much of the internet, Microsoft controlling the software industry and the PC operating system business, it is only logical that Facebook would spend a lot of money to control the social networking business (Sudarsanam & Mahate 2006).

Facebook’s move is viewed as a response to the fast growing WeChat which is owned by the Chinese technology giant Tencent and is making headway into western capitals (David 2013). The other reason behind Facebook’s move is the rapid shift in which people are moving away from the computers heading to Smartphones. This means that the next platform will be mobile and for fear of losing out, it opted to move towards WhatsApp.

Despite the fact that technology companies need to make money through acquisitions and mergers, control over great amounts of internet obviously translates to greater income for these services. Nowadays, much of the population has shied away from getting information from the old sources such as newspapers and books. This means that they get information from online sources. This means that websites such as Facebook and WhatsApp get a lot of revenue from advertising on the social networking site. With over 400 million users, WhatsApp gives Facebook a great platform for its advertising services and therefore one reason for the acquisition.

It is believed that over 20 billion messages go through WhatsApp everyday and many companies (including Google) have been in line to take over the platform before they were beaten to it.`

One interesting and different acquisition was made by Lenovo with IBM PC business being taken over. Contrary to what many expected, the company was able to transform the ailing company back to profits and in an unprecedented move, it has gone ahead and purchased Motorola from Google at a fraction of what Google bought the original company. With Lenovo, it has been a clear strategic business deals and the company aims at cracking the American Smartphone market in the near future. The company has created itself to be the largest PC manufacturer in the world within a very short period of time and people are having a lot of confidence that it will improve the fate of Motorola Mobility. The company is currently undergoing internal restructuring that is aimed at lifting Motorola from losses in the next one year. The success of the company in the American market is still expected to be rough considering that Chinese Multinationals are heavily discouraged by the American administration. This is in line with legislation passed against its fellow companies such as Huawei and ZTE due to national security reasons.

The logic behind acquisitions and the monetary implications points to companies trying to quickly build their business empires than genuine money making business. Most of the latest big names have been involved in one way or the other in acquiring ailing big businesses. Apart from Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp, most companies on the receiving end are large corporations whose market value is on the decline. As suggested by Singh (2004) and Sudarsanam & Mahate (2006), the ability of the acquiring partner to turn the tables round back to profits is usually questionable and it is obvious that these conglomerates want a greater empire rather that the market value which the transaction will bring on board.

Merger and acquisition activity is experiencing high growth rate, with corporations such as Google, Apple, Twitter and Yahoo investing billions of dollars in the past years in acquiring and establishing businesses. Even though some companies like Apple has been shying away from merger and acquisition, by establishing a brand by itself and its hardware and limiting software business to one another, other companies have ventured with ultimate returns evident in the past years. As supported by Gabsi (2012), merger and acquisition activity is interpreted on the basis of increasing shareholder returns, where the empirical research in finance as addressed in the paper indicates that short run impacts are irrelevant compared to the returns.

Conclusion

Depamphilis (2008) considered that long run impacts as referred in business language are largely negative and therefore, they have directed real inspiration for merger and acquisition activity. As asserted by AllenstrÖm & Njurell (2010), merger and acquisition activities have slight difference whereby, acquisition is referred to the state of a company taking over another and then establishing itself fully in all following transaction. On the other hand, merger is defined by the coming together of companies of same size which establish a single company in the next transactions in business. As noted from Gabsi (2012) research, companies of equal merger are not commonly evident in the business world, but acquisition has been evident from companies getting involved in acquiring businesses targeting full renovation and establishment of competitive business operations. Though not all acquisitions have been successful as evident in the research and report by Sudarsanam & Mahate (2006), companies have been practicing the activity in efforts to increasing their income.

South Pasadena Public Arts Program

South Pasadena Public Arts Program

Background

The town of South Pasadena is characterized by a number of professionals who have interest in artistic works. The South Pasadena Arts program was started in the city of South Pasadena to help showcase these unique artistic works that are made by the people residing within the town (South Pasadena, 2014). The program ensures that there is the provision of the interactive art performance and visual arts programs. This is achieved by the organization through collaboration with businesses, the local business community, community organizations and the South Pasadena Unified School District. The program is being coordinated by the South Pasadena Arts Council, SPARC. The South Pasadena Arts Council has a strong belief that through the use of arts, individuals are able to be enriched in their lives (Baker, 2001). The council also believes that arts are important to the social, educational and economic well being of the people of South Pasadena. The program is open to all actors, artists, musicians, directors, playwrights, producers, set designers, dancers, storytellers, writers, art lovers, art patrons, costume designers, singers and any other individuals interested in helping the arts in South Pasadena to thrive and survive. The artists who are interested to become members of the program are required to pay the registration fee to the particular group of interest within the South Pasadena Arts.

This research paper mainly focuses on one of the programs of the South Pasadena Arts called the Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk. The research paper investigates various issues on the Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk. Some of the issues investigated in this research paper include; the mission statement of the organization, activities and events, major accomplishment, staff and volunteers, the organization structures, the challenges of the organization, its funding and its creation among other issues.

Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk

Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk is one of the programs that were started by South Pasadena Arts. Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk was started with an aim of celebrating and showcasing the diverse, rich and amazing musicians that lives in and around the South Pasadena town (Eclectic Music Festival &Art Walk, 2014).  This was meant to offer a reflection of the community which is regarded as fiercely independent and rich in music and art concepts. The Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk program was initially started in 2008 and featured Justo Almario who performed amazingly during that time at the parking lot. The following year after the inception of the Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk, the group went further and constructed three more stages, a number of art galleries, a district of Indy merchants, boutiques and cafes.

The Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk program has now become a place of more fun and funky.  Since its inception a number of musicians have performed at Eclectic Music Festival over the years.  The Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk is one of the organizations that emerge from the main vibrant and creative community in South Pasadena.  The town of South Pasadena is characterized with people who are creative.  The first Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk produced in 2009 by the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce in the year 2009 with a number of musicians including Stan Ridgway. Since its inception the organizations has been able to have several live music performance from various musicians such as Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen, David Lindley, Mark Isham, Billy Child and The Young Dubliners. The Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk organization has grown from the initial party held at the parking lot to a regional festival that is attended by the whole community.

Literature review

Organization can be defined as social entity that is structured and managed so as to meet a collective goals and objectives (Pettigrew et al, 2001). Organizations can exist in various forms that include profit oriented organizations, community organizations, nongovernmental organizations and international organizations. All organizations are formed with an aim of meeting a particular objective. This is achieved through developing appropriate aims and objectives of the organization. The mission and vision statements therefore play an important role in the organizations structure. The mission and vision statements of organizations will act as a guiding principle for the organizations so as to accomplish their objectives.

Another important element of organization that can determine its success in accomplishing the objectives is the organization structure. The structure of an organization is designed in such a way that will ensure that it meets it objectives (Grunig & Huang, 2000). There are a number of factors that can determine organization structure such as the nature of organization, size, number of employees and its objectives. Most organizations are being headed by chief executives officer who are responsible for all the operations of the organization. Effective organizations also have independent board of directors who are elected from various stakeholders of the organizations. The independent board of directors is responsible for overseeing the operation of the organization.

It is important organizations to set clear aims and objectives. The aims and objectives of organization should be aimed at satisfying the needs of individuals. This should be ensured through consideration of the group targeted by organization. When starting organization, it is important for individual to identify the need of the targeted customers so as to be able to come up with products that can satisfy the needs of the customers. All organizations are therefore created in response to the identified needs of the society (Dorris, 2012).

Corporate social responsibility has also become a major concern of all organization. Organizations should focus on the welfare of the community through participation in community development programs. The participation of organizations in community projects can ensure that a close relationship is developed between the community and the organization (Dorris, 2012). There are a number of ways through which organizations can participate in the welfare of the community. Sponsoring various communities’ events and environmental conservations and management are some of the initiatives that organization can take cater for the needs of the society.

The success of an organization can be measured by a number of factors such as the profitability, customer’s satisfaction, employee’s satisfaction and major accomplishments. Since an organization is formed to accomplish a certain objective, its success can only be determined by its ability to meet the set objectives. This can be attained through evaluation of the financial performance, customer satisfaction and employment engagement (Grunig & Huang, 2000). The performance of the organization can also be determined by the engagement of the organization in social corporate responsibility programs. Most of the modern organizations are not only interested in making profits and satisfying customers need but also interested in improving the welfare of the community through social corporate responsibility.

Research Methodology

Research methodology involves various methods through which research data are collected and analyzed. There are various methods that can be used to collect data for research such as questionnaires, interviews and secondary sources of data such as academic journals and books. This research used both primary and secondary sources of data. The primary sources of data that were used in this research include survey questionnaires and interviews. The survey questionnaires were distributed to the local community, employees, selected artists, managers, volunteers, sponsors and directors of the organization. The responses from the questionnaires were then used to analyze the data. Secondary sources of data were also used to research on various elements such as the mission of the organization, financial performance, major accomplishments and historical facts of the organization among others.

The findings

The findings obtained from the study are provided under this section. The findings of the study were obtained after analyzing the responses obtained from interviews and questionnaires as well as trough collection of information from secondary sources of data such as books, journals and internet sources.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk is to advocate and promote music so as to recognize the local artists as a rich source within the city, build an appreciation and understanding of the value of music within the community. The mission of Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk is achieved through provision of an inspiring evening live music on the first Saturday of each year on may. This is conducted in three festival areas, open houses in the Indie Boutiques and Exhibition in Art galleries.  Many people come from South Pasadena as well as the San Gabriel Valley to listen to the musical groups with eclectic cross section styles that includes folk, jazz, rock and roll.

Activities and Events it Participates in or Promotes

Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk organization participates in various activities and events. One of the main activities that the organization participates in is the promotion of music industry within and around the city of South Pasadena.  Through hosting of various music festivals in the city, the organization encourages the development of music industry in the region as well as help nurture new talents that have an interest in music industry.

The organization is also involved in various promotional activities which it mainly uses as a source of raising revenues to keep its operations moving without being affected (Grunig & Huang, 2000). The organization has been able to attract huge crowds due to its live music performance and this has resulted to companies making deals and negotiation with the organization with an aim of promoting and creating awareness of their products. The close relationship that the organization has created with the general public has attracted various companies interested in using the popularity of the organization to gain market for their products and also ensure close relationship with their targeted customers. In this respect the organization plays a vital role of public relations and marketing to various companies (Zikman, 2009).

It can be argued that a part from participating in music activities and festivals, Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk has also resorted to public relations activities where it acts as the main channel through which organizations sells their products. Some of the products that the organization promotes on behalf of various companies include vehicles and guitars among others.  The organizations activities and festivals are nowadays sponsored by various corporations and in return it helps promote their products to the public. This has made many companies to be able to create awareness of their businesses and sell their products to the customers (King, 988).  The company advertises the products of Taylor Guitars, The Lincoln Motor Company, and 89.33 KPCC among others to the audience of the festivals that it organizes among other visitors.

The organization is also having an important section that contains Art Walk gallery. The Art walk contains galleries, open studios and some pop up surprises that originate from South Pasadena. This section also displays various artistic works of the eclectic mix of traditional, contemporary and excellent visuals treats. Some venues in the Art Walk contain some artistic work and live music as well. This enables the organization’s visitors to have access and information regarding the local community.

Major Accomplishments of the Organization

The organization has been able to grow and become one of the biggest music festival event organizers in South Pasadena. It initially started as a party at the parking lot and currently has grown to host major music live performance festivals. The festival has attracted various renowned music artists who conduct live performance at various events.  It has also attracted the attention of volunteers who have provided funds for the construction of various facilities at the premises of the organization. Currently the organization has managed to accumulate significant wealth in terms of assets that includes buildings that houses various businesses and offices at the city of South Pasadena. It has also been able to hold annual music festival each year and invites various renowned and successful artists.

Another major accomplishment of the organization is that it has help nurture local artist to become some of the greatest artist in the region. Many of the local artists have been nurtured by the organization. This has contributed positively to the living standards of the people in the region as the music industry provides a major source of income to majority of the South Pasadena residents. The organization has also grown to become a centre of attraction to various people and tourist. This again has helped raise the standard of living in the city of South Pasadena.

Staff and Volunteers

The organization has a large number of staffs that are made up volunteers, permanent employees and casual laborers. The staff of the organization is estimated to be more than 50 permanent employees. Majority of the employees are however volunteers who come in case their services are needed. However during the music festivals, the number of employees increase significantly since the festivals attracts huge crowd of employees. The Eclectic Music Festival & Art Walk is headed by a manager who reports directly to the Chief executive officer of South Pasadena Arts.

Most of the directors are volunteers who are elected by the stakeholders of the organization. The board of directors is composed of 14 members that include chairman, secretary, treasury and other directors. The directors in most cases are elected from organizations that sponsor events of the organization. The election is done during the annual general meeting.

Organizational Structure

The company is headed by the Board of Directors which is composed of volunteers responsible for providing the leadership and expertise to the organization.  The board of directors provides leadership direction to the chief executive officer of the organization. Below the board of directors is the chief executive officer, the chief executive officer reports to the board of directors. The different departments are headed by managers who reports directly to the chief executive officer.  There are various managers in the organization who are given different responsibilities in their respective environment. The main aim of the managers is to oversee the operations at their respective departments in the organizations. They are responsible for giving guidance to the employees in their assigned departments as well as developing appropriate strategies for their respective departments.

How the Organization Is Funded

The organization is mainly funded through sponsorship programs. There are a number of volunteers and companies who have come up to sponsor the events and projects of the organization. The sponsors who are mainly individuals, families and businesses make contributions to help the organization accomplish its goals as well as hold the annual musical festival events. Some of the businesses also use the organization as a platform to market their products hence gives the organization a fee due to its promotional activities (Kester, 2004). Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk organization also have a website which it uses to market its products as well as promote the products of other companies. These companies therefore pay the organization fees for hosting and promoting their product in their websites. This make the organization to get the necessary funds that it uses to conduct its main activities.

The company is also funded through fees obtained from membership registration. Members who are interested in joining the group register through payment of registration fees. The fees obtained from registration of members are also used to fund the activities of the organization. Majority of members who register in this organization are mainly musicians, artists and other people who are interested in becoming musicians and artists in the future.

Another source of income for the organization is from the various businesses that it operates. For example, the organization operates hotel businesses, sells various products on behalf of companies such as guitars and vehicles among others. Various artists also showcase and sell some of their artifacts in the organization and this also provides it with other sources of income. Other revenues are obtained from a number of assets that are owned by the organization such as buildings.

The Creation of the Organization

Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk organization was created as a result of the high number of musicians in the City of South Pasadena. The city of South Pasadena has high number of individuals who are creative in different ways such as actors, musicians, photographers and dancers among other artist.  The main reason for the creation of the Eclectic Music Festival& Art was to showcase the richness in music of the community in and around South Pasadena. The founders of the organization had a feeling that the community abundant music talents was being wasted hence came up with an idea that will ensure that the community utilize their music talents to their potential.  They also felt that music enriches individuals emotionally and socially and this encouraged them to establish the organization.

The musicians in the South Pasadena community were the main people who were behind the formation of the organization. The local musician groups advocated to be provided with a platform where they could be able to showcase their music talent as well as to help nature the musical talents in the region. Musicians also felt that music is an important source of income hence by investing in music they will be empowered economically and socially so as to be able to live a descent life. The organization also received the support of the community and this led to its establishment.

Organization Participation in Civil Engagement

The organization participates in some civic engagement. One of the areas where the organization participates in civic engagement is towards helping young musicians to realize their career to the potentials. The organization is involved in various music festivals where they help nurture young artist to become successful artist in the future. With this regards, the organization is credited for participating in activities that help raise the welfare of the community hence foster understanding in the community.  It also participates in some of the environmental matters such as conservation of the environments through tree plantations programs. Since soil erosion and environmental degradation is one of the issues of the public concern, it can be argued that it plays an important part toward public relations programs by engaging in activities that ensure improved welfare of the community (Grunig, 2013).

The organization is also actively involved in waste reduction initiatives. It recognizes the fact that the accumulation of waste in the environment could be a health hazard and risk to the community hence engages in activities that will ensure the level of waste in the environment is reduced. Due to its effort towards reduction of waste in the environment, the organization has received an award that recognizes its efforts towards waste reduction initiative in the city of London and its surroundings.

Challenges of the Organization

The organization has encountered a number of obstacles and limitation at different stages of its operation. The fundamental limitation that the organizations experienced in the initial stages was due to the inadequate fund to run its operation (Alvesson & Kärreman, 2000). During the initial period of its operation, it was difficult for the organization to conduct its activities properly dues to shortage of funds. There was no adequate cash to hold the annual music festivals at the initial stages. This made it impossible for the organization to bring prominent music personalities in music festival. The initial capital was also not enough for the organization to execute its activities effectively. Since all businesses require capital for effective operations, it was impossible for the organization to operate without adequate cash. Lack of adequate cash resulted to a number of inefficiencies in the organization as most of its essential activities were affected (Pettigrew et al, 2001). Another issue that was faced by the organization during the initial period was lack of volunteers and employees to help in running of its affairs and businesses. The volunteers and sponsors were not interested in the activities of the organization hence were unwilling to participate in its activities through contribution of funds and labor.  People were also unwilling to become employed by the company since they felt that the organization was not paying well.  This was also the case with senior management team who were also unwilling to work for the organization due to lack of funds and competitive remuneration.

Eclectic Music Festival& Art Walk organization however managed to come up with the solutions to the challenges. It decided to seek for sponsorship program. Its reliance on various corporate organizations enables it to overcome the challenges occasioned by the sponsorship programs. It also engaged with various corporate companies in an agreement which allows them to advertise their products at the various festivals that were held by the organization. This also increases the revenue of the organization significantly. The intense marketing campaign by the organization also attracted the attention of individuals, family members and sponsors who have been making significant contributions to the events and activities of the organization.  The financial problem was also reduced when the organization decided to charge fees for those willing to become members.  Many people also have nowadays volunteered to work for the organizations free of charge at its different functions, events and activities.

The Causes of World War II

The Causes of World War II

Introduction

World War II began in 1939 and continued until 1945 when it was stopped after Germany surrendered. Ideally, the war mainly involved Germany under the leadership of Hitler who was fighting against other adversaries such as Britain, the US and France. Countries that were ruled by dictators such as Japan and Italy also supported Hitler in this war. There were various factors that caused the World War II. Some of the main factors that will be discussed in this paper include, the Treaty of Versailles, the failure of appeasement, Hitler’s actions, political instability, failure of the League of Nations, and economic devastation. In addition, the paper will also highlight the biographical information of Benito Mussolini as one of the main players in the World War II.

Treaty of Versailles

In 1919, four leaders met to discuss the measures to be adopted in making Germany pay for the damages that the World War I had caused. These leaders were Orlando from Italy, Lloyd from England, Woodrow Wilson from the United States and Clemenceau from France. Woodrow wanted the peace treaty to be based on a plan that would enhance peace in Europe while Clemenceau preferred a treaty that would direct revenge to discipline Germany never to start another war in future[1]. The other two leaders wanted to find a concession between Clemenceau and Wilson.

Some of the core provisions of the Versailles Treaty include the need for Germany to take responsibility for starting World War I and to pay more than $6,550 million for all the losses caused by the war[2]. The treaty also had a disarmament clause that allowed Germany only to own a small army and a few naval ships where tanks and other complicated military equipment were not permitted. Moreover, all the territorial land was also to be taken away from Germany and returned to the original owners. Germans were not impressed with the provisions of the treaty because they were expecting a treaty that would promote peace in Europe. Nonetheless, they did not have any option but to sign the treaty. Reparations were also too much and made people in Germany to be very poor. Prices of commodities were also high and people lost their employment. As a result, this caused dissatisfaction with the government and people were willing to vote for Adolf Hitler because he promised to break the Treaty of Versailles.

Political Instability and Economic Devastation in Europe after the World War I

The Great Depression was an economic depression that had affected various parts of the world in the period preceding the World War II. Although the timing of the recession was different in various nations it started in 1930 in most of the countries and extended to the 1940s. This depression started after the decline in stock prices in September 4, 1929. As a consequence of the Great Depression, both rich and poor countries were affected. Income revenue, profits, and prices dropped drastically while the international trade also dropped by 50%. Moreover, unemployment rate in the US rose to 24% while in some countries it had reached 34%. Most of the businesses in Europe had closed down causing massive unemployment across the region. During the 1930s, an economic depression like the one that was experienced in the US had also affected other countries in Europe such as Germany and Italy[3]. Moreover, most of the businesses and companies were in a verge of being bankrupt.

The treaty of Versailles, that brought the World War I to an end, made recommendations for Germany to pay damages to all the allied powers. This war debt had a negative implication for the Germany’s economy and made it difficult to have any meaningful recovery. Equally, most of the Germans believed that this treaty was unfair, a situation that caused Germans to have bitterness towards Great Britain, France, and other allies.

After the World War I, the Germany economy was affected by a high inflation rate. This was caused by the government of Germany that had decided to print more money to pay the war debt. The inflation had caused the value of the German currency to be worthless. With this, it was also difficult for banks and other businesses to have profitable operations. Eventually, economic problems led to political instability in Germany. At times, supporters of different parties held riots in the streets. Adolf Hitler was among the political leaders who led their supporters to the streets to protest the deteriorating economy. Hitler used this opportunity to attract more supporters through his Nazi party by promising to make Germany a stable economy.

Hitler’s Actions

When Germany was defeated in the World War I, the German military was dismantled and most of the Germans were left in tough economic conditions. Adolf Hitler was a plain soldier in the war where he had been severely wounded severally. Before the war, Hitler was a poor high school dropout from Vienna. Ironically, Hitler was not even a German citizen but an Austrian who had volunteered to the German military at the start of the World War I[4].  The other German soldiers in the war perceived Hitler to be weird because he had no friends or family in German and neither did he keep any contact with his family in Austria. This made Hitler to be quite unpopular among his peers.

From such a low start, the chances of Hitler becoming a successful partisan leader were slim and almost impossible but he managed to do that in 13 years. Eventually, he resigned from the army in 1920 and joined politics as a leader of an extreme right political group that had not yet been registered as a party. After Adolf Hitler became a chancellor of Germany in January 1933, he embarked on a mission to develop Germany’s army. Immediately after taking up this position, Hitler abolished democracy and declared himself as a dictator with absolute power.  Most of the Germans believed that Hitler would soon prove to be a charismatic leader and followed him blindly trusting all his judgments and actions. Hitler portrayed himself as an exceptional speaker and attracted a lot of people in his political rallies[5]. Moreover, his approach was quite different from his political opponents because he insisted that he had a great vision for Germany’s future. He gave clear illustrations on how he planned to achieve his visions and why he strongly believed his strategy would succeed.

Unlike, ordinary politicians who promised Germans a better future, Hitler promised his followers the world. This made Hitler to outdo all his political opponents as he also organized street violence. To warn his opponents of his brutality, Hitler operated a private army of more than 450,000 street gangsters who disrupted and attacked followers from other parties[6]. The leaders of the main parties realized that Hitler was dangerous, but they were still underestimating him until after the 1933 elections when he became Germany’s prime minister through the Nazi party while his partner Goering was appointed as the minister of the police. Although the Nazi party was the minority in the coalition government, Hitler used his authority and street violence to take control. By 1934, he had managed to have a strong army, an airforce and warships, and had made military service to be compulsory[7]. Even though Britain and France knew what Hitler was doing, they had a belief that a stronger Germany was critical in preventing the extension of communism to the West.

When the Germany military was stable, Hitler ordered an invasion to Rhineland in 1936. At this time, the German military was not strong enough and could have been defeated easily but France and Britain were not ready to start another war. In the same year, Hitler managed to form two alliances. The first alliance was the Rome-Berlin Axis pact that formed a friendship between Hitler’s Germany and Mussolini’s Italy. The Anti-Comitern Pact was the second alliance that united German with Japan.

Thereafter, Hitler was ready to take back all the land that Germany had lost as a result of the Versailles Treaty. This is what prompted the German troops to enter into Austria in March 1938 and force the Austrian leader to conduct a vote on whether people were ready to cooperate with Germany. The votes were manipulated to show that 99% of the Austrian people were willing to be part of Germany by forming a union between the two countries[8]. In order to portray that he had no ill motives, Hitler made a promise that he would not pursue any further territory expansion. All the other countries including France and Britain did not intervene as they tried to avoid a war. In contrast to what he had promised, Hitler demanded for Germany to be given the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia. He was given this region in a condition that he would not invade the remaining part of Czechoslovakia. Again, he did not keep the promise and occupied the rest of Czechoslovakia in March 1939[9]. Despite the fact that Czechoslovakia called for help from Britain and France, none of them was ready to engage in a war against Hitler. However, the two countries vowed to take military action if Hitler invaded Poland with the hope that Hitler would back off and stop the aggression. This was wrong because Hitler proceeded to invade Poland on 1st September 1939 which marked the start of the World War II.

Biographical Information about Benito Mussolini

Benito Mussolini of Italy and Adolf Hitler of Germany supported a political system referred to as fascism. In a government that supports this system, all the powers are placed on a dictator. As such, all the individual rights such as freedom of speech and religion are violated because the nation and power take priority[10]. Benito Mussolini was an Italian dictator who ruled the country from 1883-1945. He had risen to power during the World War I as a prominent supporter of fascist ideology. As a socialist, he formed a fascist movement in 1919 and became a prime minister in 1922. He eventually proceeded to dictatorial power from 1925[11]. Italy had become a predominant country after Mussolini had military expenditures in Somalia, Ethiopia, Albania, and Libya.  After the military interventions in the mentioned countries, Mussolini’s armed forces were left exhausted and lagging technologically.

As a dictator, Mussolini appointed fascists to leadership positions and introduced an army thinking in the 1930s.Gradually, the fascist mentality overwhelmed Mussolini’s reasoning and believed he was a military genius when he was bale to interpret the diplomatic victories for Britain and France during the Ethiopian and Spanish wars (1935-1939). He firmly believed that he would lead Italy to greatness. Moreover, he planned for a Mediterranean-Africa empire by supporting war with the West. With this approach, he had confidence in gaining enough power to create a totalitarian state.

In May 1938, Mussolini had made a promise to support Adolf Hitler in any of the war he was associated with so long as he was fighting the democracies of the world. Mussolini was able to convince his supporters to change their pessimistic thoughts towards the Germans and allied himself with Adolf Hitler in May 1939[12]. He was expected to apply coordinated policies to stop German initiatives until such a time that the Italian forces would recover from their exhaustion. Initially, Mussolini had planned for a war in 1943-1945 but Hitler initiated the World War II in September 1939. This gave the Italians only week warning and caused humiliation to Mussolini.

Hitler’s series of successes in May 1940 prompted Mussolini to intervene in the World War II. However, Italy’s cautious generals spent most of their time in the Mediterranean and North Africa in June-October 1940[13]. Mussolini also suffered humiliation in Greece and North Africa and he only escaped a military coup through the intervention of the German military in 1941. Mainly, Mussolini suffered defeats in wars because his army was not prepared well and he was not a military genius as he believed himself to be. Thereafter, Hitler forced Mussolini to join him when the German-Soviet war was too much for the Axis strategy.

After the victories of the 1942, Mussolini persuaded Hitler to make peace with Joseph Stalin and pay more attention to overcoming British-American forces. When Hitler refused convince the Italian king to overthrow Mussolini in July 1943. It was Hitler who came to Mussolini’s rescue and made him a puppet dictator of northern Italy. As a way of rewarding Hitler, Mussolini was instrumental in facilitating the war for the Germans as well as in the creation of the fascist military forces. After Germany surrendered in April 1945 in Italy, Mussolini was forced to flee but insurgents incarcerated and killed him.

Failure of the League of Nations

The League of Nations was established in 1919 with an objective of keeping the world peace. Furthermore, all the countries were expected to be members and any dispute among them was supposed to be resolved through peaceful negotiation and not force. If the negotiations did not work trade sanctions would be issued against the aggressive country and military intervention would be invoked as a last result. Although the League of Nations recorded some successes at the initial stages, eventually it did not perform. For instance, in 1931 Japan experienced a depression that prompted people not to trust the government and instead turn to the military to look for a solution. In an effort to find a solution to the depression, the Japanese army invaded Manchuria in China because it had many minerals and other resources. When China sought for assistance from the League of Nations, the Japanese government was requested to order its army to leave Manchuria but they did not obey orders and instead Japan left the League of Nations. Likewise, the League of Nations failed to make any workable resolution when Italy invaded Abyssinia in 1935.

There were numerous factors that contributed to the failure of the League of Nations. To start with, not all the countries were part of the League of Nations. These included the US which had refused to join the League for undetermined reasons. Conversely, Germany was not permitted to join the League of Nations as a punishment for starting World War I while Russia was denied the chance due to the fear of communism[14]. There were also other countries that did not join the League while others joined and left later. Another reason why the League failed was because it did not have power or an army. The main weapon used by the League was to request the member states to issue trade sanctions to the aggressive countries but this failed since such countries continued to conduct business with non-member states. In case of a military intervention, the soldiers had to be provided by member countries and most of them were reluctant to do so due to the fear of the spoiling their relationship with the aggressive country. With such weaknesses, the League of Nations was unable to stop the World War II as well.

Failure of Appeasement

Britain and France were committed to approach and convince Hitler not to enforce his demands. In most of the crises that were initiated by Hitler, France and Britain political leaders participated in the appeasement of Hitler with the thought that he would change his mind. They did this even after receiving warnings from prominent personalities such as Winston Churchill and officials from the anti-Nazi opposition in the German military. It was quite clear that the British and France had flawed by making the decision to appease Hitler[15]. One of the logical flaws was the general belief that war was no longer necessary as was realized after the World War I. the assumption in this belief was the opposing sides in the future wars will be of similar capacity as in the World War I. They had also made a false assumption that modern technology in the military would make war a waste of resources due to the many deaths it was likely to cause. From these false assumptions, Britain and France did not see the need to modernize their military even with the knowledge that Hitler was building one of the strongest military forces equipped with technological skills. Hitler was doing this to blatantly violate the 1919 peace treaty. As a result the British and the French military forces gradually became inferior to the German military forces in terms of technological and tactical capabilities.

When the British military realized there was a possibility of another war they tried to make some military changes in 1938 but the duration was too short because the war started in 1939. Conversely, the French military was operating in the belief that war would not return any soon and hence was not prepared technologically or tactically[16]. Moreover, some war warnings directed to the French military by Colonel Charles De Gaulle, were ignored.

Another flawed assumption by Britain and France was the belief that Hitler could be appeased to cease making more demands and that he was also willing to avoid war. Both the British and French leaders should have used their intelligence systems to decipher that Hitler was not willing to avoid war. In contrast, Hitler made his position known to the whole world through the threats he issued in speeches and the book that he had written in 1923[17]. They also should have known from their past experiences that Hitler was always ready to initiate further crisis and demands after winning the previous crises. The British and French leaders failed to take note of the prevailing situations when dealing with Hitler.

The British government realized that Hitler was not willing to reduce his demand in 1939 when Czechoslovakia had already been given to him. When Hitler made took the decision to attack Poland, Britain decided to support Poland as its ally even if this had to be done through war. The French government had some intention of avoiding the war even after Poland had been attacked but joined the war after being persuaded the British government.

By applying the appeasement policy, France and Britain only resulted to using diplomatic way when Hitler violated the peace treaties, improved his military power and involved his military in the Saar region. After Hitler demanded the western region of Czechoslovakia, the British and the French government put pressurized the Czech government to give in to Hitler’s commands in order to avoid war that Hitler had threatened. The two governments also failed to take any action when Hitler demanded the rest of Czechoslovakia[18]. Likewise, Britain and France did not intervene when Italy, Hitler’s supporter in dictatorship, invaded Ethiopia and Albania. With time, Hitler acquired more territory and population and became more powerful. In addition, acquired resources from these territories and grabbed the military equipment from the disintegrated armies of the captured nations. A good example is Czechoslovakia that had an advanced military force before the Hitler’s invasion. If France and Britain had supported Czechoslovakia, the Czechs were ready to fight using their modern military. In this case, Britain and France betrayed Czechoslovakia by issuing threats to the Czechs that if they did surrender the demanded regions to Hitler, they would be blamed for causing the war. When Czechs gave in to the pressure, they surrendered the land and the military equipment that was there. This made the country to remain defenseless[19]. Hitler was aware that the Czechs would have posed a major threat to his success due to their military might. After gaining all the military equipment from the dismantled Czech forces, Hitler was at an advantage because the German military used the acquired modern equipment in World War II. Most of the military tanks that were being used in the World War II were being supplied by the Czech military industry which was under Hitler’s control.

Conclusion

World War causes can be quite voluminous depending on how they are interpreted. The treaty of Versailles was relatively harsh to the Germans and eventually causes an economic downturn in Germany where elevated levels of inflation and unemployment were experienced. As a result, the Germans felt that they needed somebody who would guarantee them a bright future and hence Adolph came in at the right time to violate the treaty. The failure of appeasement by Britain and France also played a key role in causing the World War II because the two nations failed to stop Hitler’s actions that lead to the war. If the League of Nations was stronger, it would have succeeded in stopping the World War II but its lack of an army and withdrawal of members contributed to its failure. Moreover, fascism, and the economic situation in Europe also played a part in causing the war. Although all of these factors contributed to the war, Hitler’s actions played the biggest role in causing the World War II and without him, the war would probably not have occurred.

Health Care Reform Analysis

Health Care Reform Analysis

The modification of the American healthcare system has received worlwide attention. The healthcare reform is the most significant and far-reaching subject in the healthcare sector. The hallmark aspect of this subject encourages the American government to respond to various issues affecting the healthcare system (Hoffman, 2008). To Hoffman, the American government has identified concerns about cost, quality, and access to the current health care system. It is indisputable that, the three concepts (cost, access, and quality) are important with regard to healthcare services that people receive. For any healthcare service provided, cost is an important factor that determines where and how an individual receive healthcare. Most people require an appropriate, fair, and reasonable health care. When these concepts are applied to the nation, the government is in a better position to reform health care system. Another aspect that has gained attention is the concept of access. The availability of healthcare services is important as it reduces mortality rate. The American government has worked hard to provide its citizens more access to health care at an affordable cost. As discussed in this paper, the American government has played a major role in financing, directing, and planning healthcare services.

The current health care system in America is a potent illustration of market failures that require government intervention. The first core problem affecting the American health care is access to health care. Studies assert that, over 47 million people that die in the United States lack health insurance (Naylor et al, 2011). People without health insurance lack access to healthcare and as a result, they suffer. The residents of rural areas, low-income people, and minorities lack access to health care. The high cost of medication has affected most people in the United States. With this, the government has worked hard to reduce the cost of health care. Studies show that, the American health care system is often uncoordinated and highly fragmented especially to people with chronic illnesses (Rushefsky, 2010).  A study by Rushefsky (2010) reveals that, the United States ranks the lowest among other industrial nations in measures to access, equity, quality, and efficiency. With these concerns, different proposals have been made from different political parties to augment change in the U.S. healthcare system.

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Act implemented in 2010 by President Barrack Obama, the country has established various programs and services to reduce health cost and improve quality care. The programs have helped patients with chronic conditions. In brief, ObamaCare has improved quality care to most Americans by raising standards of health care coverage. The policy has also eliminated pre-existing aspects of discrimination. The middle-income and low-income have access to quality medical care through programs such as Medicaid. The ObamaCare has ensured that health care is available to any American citizen who cannot obtain or afford quality healthcare.

The Republican Party in the United States has voted collectively against implementing the ObamaCare. The Republican Party believes that, the ObamaCare would increase taxes for everyone. The majority of Republicans believe that the Obama care would increase the cost of living (Naylor et al, 2011). The Party emphasizes that the country should not increase taxes in an attempt to make health care affordable. Instead, every individual should pay for his or her health cost. The policy has been criticized of being the most expensive by far and thus, not being effective in reforming the health care systems in the United States.

Although the ObamaCare has been criticized by the Republican Party, its importance in improving quality healthcare cannot be underestimated. From Rushefsky (2010) perspective, the key elements required to enhance the required change in the health care sector are, improving quality care, making the health care affordable, and accessible. Based on these findings, it is unquestionable that the ObamaCare has been on the lead to solve the current needs in the health care sector.

Moral Philosophy

 Moral Philosophy

Moral philosophy is connected to ethics. It is a discipline reflecting on what is morally bad or good and what is wrong and right depending on context. Moral philosophy is expressed by difficult questions that affect the fundamentals of decision-making processes. Self aware organizational level leaders are expected to reflect on ethical and moral commitments. Moral philosophy has been instrumental in guiding the actions of individuals throughout the life. Leaders have the responsibility of guiding upcoming leaders by portraying an effective and inclusive moral philosophy. This paper focuses on my moral philosophy as a leader in the United States Army.

Success attached to the organizations is influenced by the organizational culture that defines the form of interactions among the workforce. The military is characterized with diverse and rich cultures. According to research, the military has been useful in developing programs that deal with cultural diversity[1]. Leaders in the military are expected to instill utmost value and respect to one another as the teams work to uphold the core principles of the military service.

My leadership philosophy parallels the following personal beliefs that are of importance to me; candor, respect, consistency, and credibility. Values are the fundamental aspects of our being. As leaders, we must exemplify the characteristics of our core values, on and off duty, and utilize them in developing our subordinates. My vision is that we operate as a highly effective team that is cohesive, competent and disciplined that are physical fit and capable of responding to call at a moment’s notice.

I was raised in a Hispanic military family, and my father exemplified the utmost principles of discipline, honor, the hard work and integrity. He expected results from his children, and I expect results from my Soldiers. My mother instilled qualities in me that are compassionate, caring, and forgiving. My parents are deceased, and I value the fact that as a leader of soldiers that I can impart my family morals and beliefs on them daily while upholding the traditions of the US Army. Anything less would be detrimental to unit success, as it would contradict my notion of being genuine with my soldiers.

In my professional life, in the United States military I have leant on the importance of culture in the line of duty. This is from grudging acceptance to managing cultural diversity through valuing cultural differences in the military[2]. Diversity climate is negatively affected by prejudice, stereotyping and ethnocentrism. As a leader in the military, I value training, empowerment and mentoring as a way of appreciating cultural diversity in the line of duty[3]. In the modern era, the social composition of the United States military is changing with the inclusion of individuals from different cultures sourced from all parts of the world.

United States military is a reflection of the American people. Women and minority groups among the members of the United States army are on a constant rise. It is argued that the rise in the number of minority groups in the military is attached to the commitment of the military leaders, rolling of equal employment in the workforce and passing of nondiscrimination laws. My leadership commitment, managing and understanding of cultural diversity in the military have been influential in harmonizing the workforce.

Education has been identified as critical in managing and understanding cultural diversity. United States army has been facilitating short courses on educational programs dealing with cultural diversity, equal opportunity employment and sexual harassment among other courses[4]. Personally I have benefited from the courses offered to the senior leaders; the courses enlighten leaders on ways of dealing with power and discrimination, issues of socialization, diversity management, racism and extremism among others important topics.

I value the aspect of learning from my mistakes; I picked up the concept from my late parents. Learning from the past mistakes has ensured that I keep on improving my moral philosophy. I have learned on the best ways of dealing with gender orientation, race orientation, cultural orientation and sexual orientation. I have observed on how the United States military has handled the issues with time, and that learning from the past mistakes has made me develop the right path in the line of duty. In the earlier years, minority groups such as the blacks serving in the United States military were attached to a need, this has changed with modernization and socialization[5].

There are diverse issues that affect my leadership in the military. Individual level factors identify with personalities, identity structures, stereotyping and prejudice. Intergroup and group factors identify with ethnocentrism, cultural differences ad intergroup conflicts. Organizational level factors identify with informal integration, accumulation and cultural processes, structural integration and institutional bias among the workforce. As a leader in the United States military, I have realized that there are individual career outcomes that influence my performance.

Affective outcomes are influenced by job involvement, career satisfaction and organizational identification. Achievement outcomes are influenced by horizontal mobility rates, promotion mobility rates, job performance ratings and compensations. Military effectiveness is influenced by attendance, work quality, productivity, turnover, recruiting success, problem solving, innovation, creativity, intergroup communication and workgroup cohesiveness[6].

Leadership is taught at all stages of the United States military. My experience has taught me how to lead in the military as an effective leader. The leader assesses the condition and position of the military, strengthens the commitment of the top management teams, choose solutions to problems collectively, revisit the goals as a team and keep on building on the existing goals and objectives. Individuals in the military junior ranks should be let in to contribute in the decision-making processes. I belief that I am a pluralistic leader through my prowess of training, empowering and mentoring other members of the military; this has been influential in encouraging a work environment that is positive[7].

The personal survival of all the soldiers is in the hands of the teams. Soldiers have the responsibility of protecting one another irrespective the differences. Soldiers are guided by the concentric circles identifying with platoon, teams, battalions, divisions, squads and brigades[8]. The group dynamics in the military is influential in meeting the preset goals and objectives of the teams. The moral direction provided by the top management teams is critical in setting the right tone in the military, which acts as the driving force for the military service. Soldiers are taught on the best ways of dealing with emotions. Emotions have a capability of building rage in combats; soldiers are taught on the best ways of dealing with combats since it is spiritually and physically involving[9].

The limits of a human being are pushed by violence and the reality of death in the context of killing or being killed; survival becomes critical to the success of the teams. A disciplined and morally formed soldier is influential in the fighting force. Ethical decisions in the military are useful in the line of duty and in personal life. Soldiers are expected to display a moral grounding in the way soldiers carry out their daily activities.

United States Department of Labor Case Study

United States Department of Labor Case Study

In this age of globalization, competition for jobs is high. This means that employers must be tactical in the benefits and compensation they offer employees in order to retain top talent. Experts posit that there is a steady stream of both regulatory and statutory changes that are difficult for employers and employees to keep abreast with. This thus necessitates a platform where the changes can be communicated to both the employers and employees in a comprehensive manner. While employers may have access to lawyers in order to get interpretations of the laws, employees may be left to their own devices. This makes the Department of Labor’s website especially regarding health plans and benefits all the more useful for them.

The major features of the website are the main page area, the subtopics bar, the part linking visitors to other Department of Labor web pages on the specific subtopic chosen and the interactive area that allows visitors to receive pertinent information via email. The main page area is an important part of this website as it gives a general overview of the laws that are responsible for ensuring that employees receive their due benefits while ensuring that employers are aware of the benefits due to employees. This area has the option of referring visitors to more detailed pages where the laws can be explained in their entirety including the specific repercussions of contravening them. The main page area offers a basic outline of what is entailed in a group health plan with specific roles played by the employer or employee agencies like labor unions. The subtopics bar is a navigational tool that indicates the specific benefits due to employees and also allows visitors to the page access the specific legislation overseeing the listed benefits. Specifically, this segment deals with childcare assistance, compliance assistance, information of different health plans, modes of continuation with health plans upon voluntary or involuntary termination, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), other fiduciary responsibilities, education on health benefits, mental health benefits, the Newborn’s Act that delves into the protection of mothers and their newborns, participant rights, information on specific plans, the portability of health coverage and women’s health and cancer rights protections (Dau-Schmidt et al, 2009).

Whenever a visitor to the site opens a given subtopic, the main page area changes to reflect information on it. At the bottom of this main page area is a segment that lists links that are pertinent to the subtopic chosen. This segment allows a visitor access to other pieces of legislation and other pages that have information like; pushes by other organizations for a review of the benefits. There is an interactive area on the left hand side of the page where a visitor can have information or changes pertinent to any part of the employee benefits and plans communicated to him/her via email. This covers a far wider spectrum as it allows interested parties have any information encompassed within the entire Department of Labor sent to them.

There is an option on the subtopics bar for checking compliance. This specific option marked ‘compliance assistance’ allows employees and employers to access information regarding voluntary compliance, opinions of the advisory board and other publications that detail the requirements for compliance. The information displayed therein is supplied by the Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) that is charged with ensuring that all employees are duly compensated (Rothstein & Liebman, 2011). Employers have to navigate the specific subtopics in order to fully understand all the benefits that are due to their employees.

There is a requirement that plan administrators give all the facts about the retirement and health benefit plans. These include all rules, documents detailing how the plans are to be operated and managed and financial information. Since some of the plans change on a regular basis, the plan administrators are obligated to communicate them to the participants. Therefore, employers that are willing to comply with all the rules must apply to be participants so that they receive information as it changes. On the other hand, plan administrators are obligated to provide information to any party that solicits it. Employers must be aware that ERISA compliance is a necessity that cannot be overlooked. Any deviation from offering requisite benefits and compensation may come at a hefty cost to the employer (Cox et al, 2011). Therefore, apart from being a participant of ERISA-covered retirement or health benefit plan, the employer must constantly visit the DOL website to get first hand information on the changing plan compositions.

The DOL website serves as a platform for informing employees about what their benefits are. It is therefore incumbent on the employees to ensure that they receive what is due to them. The website gives a detailed account of the benefits and the changes that occur when they occur. Employees can choose to be participants in the interaction with EBSA so that they are armed with all the relevant information. Once they acquire the requisite information, then they are empowered by law to ensure that they are given what is due to them. The advantage of the website is that it provides information on all the authorities that are charged with overseeing that benefits to employees are paid. Therefore, where such benefits have been withheld or where there is no full compliance to legislation, then the employees are empowered to follow the laid out legal processes to address the discrepancies.

The segment at the bottom of the webpage that offers information on links to detailed legislation and interest groups also offers answers to visitors’ frequently asked questions. Therefore, should an employee feel that he/she does not fully grasp the tenets of the legislations or the laid out plans and benefits, then, he/she can get further clarification from this segment. Additionally, links to employee organizations like labor unions and other interest groups are provided. If an employee feels that his/her rights have not been duly granted, then he/she can agitate for assistance from these bodies. Simply reporting a contravention of the laws in benefits due to employees is an adequate first step towards ensuring that there is compliance (Feinman, 1976).

Table: Outline of the Department of Labor website

The above illustration is an outline of the DOL website.  The outline is a basic representation of how the website should be navigated to attain maximum information in ensuring that a visitor complies with all regulations. On the left hand side, there is a tab that allows one to get all updates to the website via email. This updates may include reviews of legislation which may affect the benefits due to employees as well as the obligations of employers. The advantage of this section is that it is easy to use as updates can be given in three modes depending on the interests of visitors: Topics that are entailed in the updates encompass wages, unemployment insurance, health plans and benefits among others; the audience is divided according to jobseekers or those who are unemployed, employers, workers and representative organizations: and location entails the physical addresses of either the business in question or the employer or employee. The location is an important factor as labor laws may vary from state to state and from city to city (Barnes & Thornburg LLP, 2011). Ignorance in legislation is not regarded as a defense for contravening it which means that anyone who desires to be on the right side of the law should be a subscriber to the updates service so that he/she receives pertinent information as it arises.

The second important part is the right hand area that displays different subtopics. These are the specific benefits that are due to the different clusters of employees. For example pregnant women and mentally ill people have different benefits that are due to them meaning that they each have separate subtopics that detail them. The middle part displays the detailed information on the given subtopics. Since the subtopics section only lists the benefits and legislations the middle area becomes useful as it displays detailed information. At the bottom of the middle part is a list of other web pages that entail important information linked to the subtopics listed on the right. Any party seeking to be fully compliant with the requirements of Department of Labor must be able to properly navigate the website so that they receive all information encompassed therein. The above discussion has provided an account of the important aspects of the website that would enable a first time visitor get a basic idea of where to look the information he/she seeks.

Chickenpox

Chickenpox

Chickenpox is a common disease that affects most young children worldwide. The disease can be a particularly frustrating and worrying experience for parents, because it is highly infectious. Basically, chickenpox also known as (Vericella) is an illness that causes red spots or blisters and itchy rashes all over the body. Although the disease is most common in children, some adults may get the disease if they had not received the chickenpox vaccine during childhood.  In rare cases, the disease may also affect pregnant women, teens, and adults who have low immune system. The disease is caused by the variella-zoster (VZ) virus, which is very infectious. Chickenpox is transmitted via indirect contact with infected person’s clothes beddings, or other items like toys, direct contact with the vesicle fluid, or airborne droplets. The first symptoms of the disease are headache, a sore throat, and fever. After some days, the victims may have some red spots, which may go through different stages such as blistering, bursting, and crusting. In most cases, health experts advise parents or victims affected that, there is no cure for the viral infection (Parad, 2012). However, victims can relieve the symptoms by applying lotions, cool sponging, or bathing that enhance the cooling effect on the spots. The medication knows as acyclovir can combat or reduce the vericella infection. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of chicken pox in regard to the factors that contribute to the development of the disease, and the epidemiologic triangle that relates to this disease. Also, the paper will discuss one national agency that addresses the disease.

Description of the disease

Causes

According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2013), chickenpox is caused by VZ virus. The disease requires adequate care and attention because it is highly infectious. Victims with the disease are advised to stay at home to avoid infecting other people. Health professionals encourage victims not to share their clothes with others as this may indirectly infect others. Usually, the disease is transmitted via indirect contacts with infected items such as toy, clothes, or beddings; direct contact with the vesicle fluid, or airborne droplets.

Symptoms

The first notable symptoms of chickenpox include fever, malaise, and dry cough. Children may become unsettled or irritable. The symptoms are further followed by a rash, which may last for 6 days or less. After some few days, crops of small red spots appear. In most cases, the spots start to occur on the face, chest, or ears and then spread into other parts of the body. After a week, the spots become blistered and the victim experience severe pain. An adult may become infected by breathing airborne trace, if he or she was not fully treated or vaccinated against the virus. Quintessentially, the disease is so contagious that, an infected individual can spread the infection even prior to having any signs of being infected. After being exposed to the virus, most symptoms begin after two weeks. This period is known as incubation period, which often occur after the exposure to the VZ virus.

Demographic of interest

Over 90% of young children are affected by the disease worldwide (Brown, 2009). The increased morbidity occurs in immune-compromised patients and some adults who may have never received vaccination. In 1990-1994, the mortality rate was high among children under the age of 20 years (Brown, 2009). However, in the 21st century, chickenpox deaths among children have decreased because of the vaccine enacted to combat the illness.  Although chickenpox is most common in children, some susceptible adults may be at a risk of being infected. These people include pregnant women, people with low immunity such as those with HIV, and newborn babies. Most people who may have had the diseases may not develop a second time. Nevertheless, some people may develop the disease twice since the virus may develop later in life.

Complications

The most common complications in children are bacterial skin infection. Other notable complications include pneumonia, skin sores, and encephalitis. Otitis Media is another notable complication in children. Children with low immunity or with other illness such as cancer may suffer severely with chickenpox. Adults with low immunity such as HIV patients may also suffer from the disease.

Treatment

There is no specific cure or treatment for the disease. The treatment is given to combat or reduce the symptoms. For instance, controlling itch may be treated with topical applications like calamine lotion, which enhance a cooling effect or oral antihistamines, which reduces the itch. Wet compresses may reduce the itch symptoms. Cutting fingernails may protect the skin. In case of severe complications such as pneumonia, the patient should be referred to secondary care. Patients should drink plenty water to reduce dehydration. Antivirale can combat and reduce the severity of the symptoms (Prichard, 2005). Lastly, children should be given chickenpox vaccine to avoid the disease occurrence.

The Determinant of health

There are various factors that contribute to the disease development. These factors include income and social status, cultural, economic, and environmental factors. Low income people are more likely to suffer from the illness because of lack of resources to combat or reduce the symptoms. Support from the communities, friends, and families enhance better health. However, lack of support may increase the complications of the disease since patients may be weak to take care of themselves. Education is a core factor closely related to socioeconomic status. Effective education for parents on the importance of vaccinating their children with chickenpox vaccine is important as it reduces chances of being infected with the disease. Parents or adults without education are more likely to suffer from the disease as they may lack knowledge of how to respond to the disease. The physical environment that an individual lives is a core determinant of health. Children living in poor households are more likely to suffer from the disease because of lack of resources. Lack of sanitation may increase airborne contaminants, which may increase the spread of the disease. Some people may suffer severely from the disease because of their culture. For instance, a parent may believe that it is not right for his/her child to receive chickenpox vaccine. Such beliefs may lead to high mortality rate as discussed by Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2013).

The Epidemiological Triangle

As noted by Canada University (2013)

As indicated in the above appendix, the disease may be transmitted via indirect contacts for instance infected items such as toy, clothes, or beddings, direct contact with the vesicle fluid, or airborne droplets.  The rapid increase of chickenpox is mostly caused by environmental exposure. As previously discussed, lack of sanitation may increase airborne contaminants, which may increase the spread of the disease. Poverty may also increase the severity of the disease especially when there are many symptoms. The disease increases during early spring and late winter. The infection occurs later during adolescence and childhood in tropical climates. The best way to avoid the disease is to have the child immunized. Most countries give out chicken vaccine for free. Parents should also be motivated to use suitable medication to relieve the symptoms of the disease.

The Role of the Community Health Nurse

As previously mentioned, Chickenpox is a common disease that affects young children. With this, nurses have established effective ways to reduce the symptoms of the disease. In most cases, the Virus is diagnosed clinically. The community of nurses has ensured that all children are vaccinated with vericella vaccine. Parents have also been advised to separate the children affected from those not affected.   Some of the contribution of nursing to address chronic diseases includes promoting a safe environment with adequate sanitation, leading role in fighting against chickenpox, scaling up the most affected population and finally coming up with ways to prevent the illness.

National Agency that addresses the disease

The National Shingles Foundation is the leading nonprofit organization that fights against chickenpox. Since its establishment in 1991, the organization has laid a strong ground for many to understand the causes, symptoms, treatments, and preventions of chickenpox (Brown, 2009). The organization acts as an information agency to thousands people suffering from the illness, their physicians, and families. World Health Organization (WHO) has also been on the lead to address the nature of the disease and how it can be prevented. WHO is a strong organization for health in the United Nations that provides leadership on health research and further set norms and standards to access trends of the disease (Prichard, 2005).

Mentorship in the Clinical Environment

Mentorship in the Clinical Environment

Over the past decades, mentoring in the clinical environment has become the focus of much discussion and research. Mentoring is a powerful human resource empowerment tool for the transmission of skills and knowledge in a supportive environment. It is a crucial process in, which experienced healthcare providers share their experiences, values, knowledge, wisdom, skills, and challenges faced in the clinical environment with younger employees or students pursuing the course (Shapira-Lishchinsky 2012, p.437). Mentors play a crucial role in the clinical environment in that they create an environment where prospective employees are trained to be competent and productive in their duties. The process of mentoring facilitates novice practitioners and students towards more advanced and competent levels of clinical expertise. For the past years, mentoring has assisted experienced healthcare providers with specific skills and knowledge required to carry out their duties effectively (Halfer, Graf & Sullivan 2008, p.244). The process of mentoring requires determination, patience, and commitment. Mentors must work hard to attain their goals and objectives in the clinical setting. They must be friendly, approachable, and loving to attract clinical students. This paper discusses the value of mentoring in the clinical environment and the role mentors can play in facilitating learning and assessment in the clinical setting.

Mentoring clinical students has been known to be effectual in fostering professional and personal development. A research by Löfmark, Morberg, Öhlund  & Ilicki (2009, p.107) documented that, clinical students learn most in an environment that enhance a sense of belonging. In the clinical setting, mentors can facilitate learning and assessment in the healthcare by supporting, encouraging, and making students feel they are part of the team that can enhance great influence in the medical field. In essence, most clinical students experience many challenges than other professionals. Most students worry about lack of experience, handling difficult patients, or giving patients wrong medication or information. Some students worry about getting a secure job with good earnings (Mullaney 2011, p.3). With these challenges in mind, mentors can help clinical students to succeed in their careers regardless of the challenges encountered in the field.  Mentors can foster confidence to students by encouraging them to embrace every challenge in the medical field (Forsyth & Stoff 2009, p.588). Mentoring can allow clinical students to explore new ideas in the clinical setting and embrace every opportunity that enhance professional or personal development. To Halfer, Graf & Sullivan (2008, p.243), learning theories have laid a strong theoretical framework, which explain how mentoring process foster a successful learning in the clinical environment. In essence, learning theories are important since they explain how people learn, thereby helping many people understand the importance mentorship in the clinical environment. By definition, learning is the persistence change in the human performance that occurs when the learner interacts with the environment.

The three main learning theories that explain why mentoring process is crucial in the clinical setting are behaviorism, constructivism, and cognitive theories. Skinner was a prominent figure who left a superb reputation in the field of psychology. In his research, Skinner recognized that learning process is best manifested by change of behavior (Mullaney 2011, p.3). He also believed that a positive environment plays a crucial role in fostering a successful learning process. The theorist believed that human beings learn best in a supportive, encouraging, and responsive environment. Mentors or else teachers who support students create a responsive environment suitable for learning process. Arguing from the clinical setting perceptive, it is unquestionable that mentors should create a supportive learning environment where clinical students can conduct clinical practices effectively.  Paul Chance who was a prominent figure in the cognitive psychology believed that rewards are crucial in making students learn effectively (Mills & Mullins 2008, p.310). In brief, Paul Chance believed that effective learning process occurs when those in the authority or with adequate experience guide students towards what is expected of them. Based on this argument, mentors can improve students’ learning process by boosting their morale when conducting daily duties in the clinical setting.

In their research Mills & Mullins (2008, p.310), a student is more likely to understand the basic facts about clinical field, when he is motivated or praised after conducting a task successfully. Mentors can train clinical students to deliver quality patient care by highlighting past experiences where quality care was not delivered and the consequences that emerged. By so doing, a student may fear making the same mistakes in the future. Robust mentorship should help students reflect on their responsibilities in enhancing the well-being of patients. In other words, mentors should help clinical students to understand they have a crucial role in enhancing the well-being of patients (Halfer, Graf & Sullivan 2008, p.244).

To Shapira-Lishchinsky (2012, p.438), the unfamiliarity of clinical practices and fear of making mistakes in the clinical setting increases anxiety to most clinical students. This anxiety is due to lack of knowledge, fear of unknown, or doubt about the professional role. Nurse mentors can reduce the anxiety, doubt, or fear by using simulation, where clinical students conduct real life scenarios and case studies. In essence, most clinical students value acceptance, support, respect, familiarity, and recognition of the role and contribution to patients’ well-being. Behavioral learning theorists believe that a reward is a powerful reinforcement that increases the likelihood of the behavior occurring (Stick-Mueller et al 2010, p5). When a desirable behavior is established in the learning environment, then reinforcement maintains that behavior. Arguing from this context, mentors can provide reinforcement by encouraging clinical students to carry out their duties confidently. For instance, when a novice practitioner is learning how to inject insulin, the mentor can look for a positive behavior and then gives immediate reinforcement such as, “I like the way you injected, you did it an excellent way”. Such reinforcement would be crucial in the clinical setting as it would boost confidence to those without experience in the medical field. The process of mentoring would eventually boost performance, productivity, morale, and competent levels of clinical expertise (Stick-Mueller et al 2010, p5).

Cognitive learning theorists affirm that, learning is a significant internal process where information is transferred (Forsyth & Stoff 2009, p.587). Learning occurs through the exchange of information. With this, the way information is presented or transferred plays a crucial role in the clinical environment. Arguing from the cognitive perceptive, mentors help clinical students to learn what is expected of them in the clinical setting. Through mentorship, the learner gain adequate skills, knowledge, and experience to perform clinical tasks productively. Additionally, clinical students acquire increased competence and confidence in performing their tasks (Forsyth & Stoff 2009, p.588). The guidance and assistance that clinical mentors offer to clinical students are fundamental as they increase morale, satisfaction, and quality clinical skills. Mentors play a significant role in advising, befriending, motivating, assisting, and supporting students in the clinical environment. They also create a strong ground for students to understand how they can be competent in the medical field (Moss et al 2006, p.46).

In the clinical setting, mentoring has been known to boost skills, knowledge, and facts when conducting clinical practices. A clinical student with a mentor is more likely to perform his/her duties effectively than an individual without. A student can only improve in his clinical practices if he or she has a good role model who is competent and experienced in the field. In essence, mentors play a crucial role in assisting clinical students to conduct their roles in a professional and competent manner. Committed and effective mentors are crucial since they increase morale and work performance in the clinical setting. In their research, humanist learning theorists believe that learning cannot take place unless there is a supportive environment (Moss et al 2006, p.46). Healthcare providers succeed in their professional when their achievements or efforts are reinforced and recognized. When mentors support clinical students they create a supportive environment, which in turn facilitate effective learning process. Mentoring is a crucial process that cannot be underestimated since it fosters adequate information on how to enhance patients’ well-being. A clinical student with a mentor or a role model is more likely to conduct his or her duties effectively than an individual without a mentor (Potter, Abrams, Townson & Williams 2009, p.17).

To Sherman (2008, p.236), mentorship enhances accountability between the mentor and the student. Specifically, mentors can foster effective learning process by helping clinical students set career goals, and motivate them to make steps to achieve them. Such a mentorship would allow clinical students to understand how to foster quality care in the clinical setting. In other instances, mentors can help clinical students to measure, interpret, and respond to healthcare data. Also, healthcare providers would learn how to respond to various illness affecting patients (Sherman 2008, p.236). Mentors can facilitate effective learning and assessment in the medical field by helping novice practitioners to handle cultural differences that emerge in the workplace. A mentor could highlight the benefits that emerge when healthcare providers embrace every culture. Sherman continues to argue that; mentor can also create a strong ground where those without experiences can interact with those with adequate experience in the clinical environment. This increases morale and satisfaction since the student or novice practitioner could have someone to respond to every query in the clinical field. For instance, if a student wonders if he will get a job when he finishes his study, the mentor could guarantee him of many job opportunities available in the respective field. In this case, an individual without a mentor could be discouraged as he wonders whether he will get a job or not. Mentorship increases job satisfaction (Potter, Abrams, Townson & Williams 2009, p.17). It is crucial to note that, a novice practitioner interacting with an individual with adequate experience, skills, and knowledge in the clinical setting is more likely to be satisfied and motivated when conducting clinical practices. In most cases, this occurs because there is someone offering guidance, support, love, care, attention, and motivation (Sherman 2008, p.237).

To Moss et al (2006, p.46), a mentor can facilitate a successful learning environment when they impact novice practitioner with adequate skills, knowledge, and experience to conduct clinical practices. Although a mentor may not perform all tasks in the clinical setting, he may demonstrate a task to guide the student in carrying out his duties in future. For instance, a mentor may invite a nursing student when injecting a patient, which eventually would increase the students’ knowledge and skills. A mentor can also provide the students with tips of career growth, and explain how these tips are beneficial in the clinical setting. Moss et al (2006, p.47) believe that,  a mentor can also introduce a novice nurse to other qualified professionals, which would increase confidence and a sense of belonging in the workplace. Introducing a novice nurse to other experts in the health care would lay a clear picture that, everybody can achieve his or her dream with determination and total commitment. A nursing student may also benefit from the life experiences shared by the mentor. This would foster effective interaction between the mentor and the healthcare provider. Specifically, a student without any experience in the medical field could relate well to a mentor who has shared his life experience, education background, and career (Sherman 2008, p.236).

To Halfer, Graf & Sullivan (2008, p.244), self-evaluation is a crucial process that mentors can use to facilitate effective learning and assessment in the clinical environment. Although most mentors are more concerned with telling their follower on what should be done, it could be vital to pose a challenge. Instead of demanding the follower who in this case may be a nursing student or a novice practitioner to perform a specific task in a certain way, a mentor may challenge the student to think critically towards the task he has performed. If an individual truly wants to grow, he may have to evaluate himself/herself towards what he has done. In essence, a mentor can use several self-evaluation questions such as what have you learnt from your course and how can use the knowledge you have acquired in the clinical setting. Such questions would help a nursing student to set her goals, which eventually would enhance an effective learning process (Halfer, Graf & Sullivan 2008, p.245). Mentors can also use various tactics to impact knowledge to their followers in the clinical setting. For instance, a mentor can outline various current legal cases that have emerged in the clinical setting, and thereafter ask the student to respond to that case. This would ensure that the student understand laws governing nursing professional.

Photosynthesis and Respiration

Photosynthesis and Respiration

Photosynthesis refers to the process by which plants having green coloring matter, convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy in the form of sugar. This energy is stored in the sugar molecules in the form chemical bonds (Stein, 2014). The process of photosynthesis takes place in two basic steps: the light dependent and light independent stages. In the light dependent stage, energy excites the electrons on the chloroplast; as a result, the electrons move to an acceptor called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP) which turns to NADPH. Water splits into hydrogen and oxygen. Moreover, the energy carrier ADP turns to ATP in readiness for stage two of the process. The main products at the end of light dependent stage are ATP, oxygen, NADPH. The second stage involves the products from the first stage without the use of light. This stage uses both the energy and the electrons in the ATP and NADPH to form sugar from carbon dioxide gas. The first stage occurs in the membranes while the second stage occurs in the stroma. It is worth noting that oxygen is the main byproduct of photosynthesis.

Unlike photosynthesis, respiration uses oxygen and sugars to produce energy. There are two forms of respiration. These include aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic respiration is a form of cellular respiration, which utilizes oxygen to generate energy in the form of ATP and carbon dioxide as a byproduct (Pearson Education, 2014). The raw materials are sugar and oxygen, which are the main products of photosynthesis. However, in anaerobic respiration or fermentation, oxygen is not used and other chemicals accept electrons. Mostly, anaerobic respiration occurs in red blood cells and bacteria. It produces lactic acid, low ATP, alcohol, and carbon dioxide gas. Since it uses sulfates, nitrates, and sulfur as electron acceptors, which have smaller reduction potentials than oxygen, it is very inefficient, and produces less energy. Through photosynthesis, the plants manufacture sugars. These sugars are broken down in the cells of organisms the absence of oxygen to produce energy, lactic acid, and carbon dioxide gas.

According to Richard (2013), enzymes are very important for most biological processes. Enzymes have active sites where food substrates adhere. Enzymes catalyses reactions by offering an alternative route that requires lower activation energy. This particular mode of action resembles the catalysts. The interaction between enzymes and substrates takes three main steps. In the first step, the enzyme collides with the substrate in the right direction, orientation, and with sufficient energy. The second step involves the locking of the enzyme and the food substrate to form enzyme-substrate complex. This complex is an intermediate between the food substrate and the product. Finally, the enzyme-substrate complex breaks and forms the desired product leaving the enzyme free and unused, just like chemical catalysts remain chemically unchanged. However, cells regulate activities of enzymes (Richard, 2013). There are several ways of regulating the enzyme activity by the cells. Firstly, the cells can control the food substrate availability. The lower the concentration of the substrate, the slower the enzymatic activity, and the converse is always true. Secondly, in most cells, product inhibition takes place. In this process, some parts of a highly concentrated product bind on the active sites of enzymes, and thus inhibit further catalysis. Thirdly, the concentration of hydrogen ions plays a key role in enzyme regulation. Since enzymes are sensitive to changes in hydrogen ion concentration, the cells can easily alter the concentration of hydrogen ions to inhibit the enzymatic process. Other processes include protonation of active sites, and covalent modifications.
