Dear Writer, thanks to those of you whom have helped me through this doctoral journey. I am now beginning to do my doctoral project and need your services again. I just completed my intern training for my doctoral degree at a substance abuse center. Also for my doctoral topic I came up with the following: A study of the longer-term psychological effects of divorcees measuring suicidal intent amongst those who survive overdoes through efficacy of psychiatric treatment.

Selecting the Doctoral Project Topic
The University encourages Doctoral Projects that extend the work of the doctoral candidate’s profession into emerging fields of inquiry which address contemporary issues. The doctoral candidate is encouraged to select a topic that falls within the scope of his or her expertise, interest, and career objectives.

There are several reasons why ideas are revised: the topic is too broad; the topic is too narrow; time-limit constraints exist, and/or accessibility of subjects hinders the scope of the study. During the process of selection, it is advisable for the candidate to conduct preliminary library research. For example, exploring Doctoral Project Abstracts for a wide range of research methods is useful. For a Sample List of Doctoral Projects Topics, see Appendix A.
The doctoral candidate will find it worthwhile to spend time researching and possibly rejecting a topic. This process creates a solid foundation for exploring the subject the doctoral candidate initially chooses. Often efforts devoted to those abandoned topics have a way of resurfacing for consideration in future projects.
Prospectus
The candidate will complete a Research Prospectus which is a brief overview of the Doctoral Project, giving the reader sufficient information about the work the candidate is proposing, providing information on how the candidate plans to do the research, and explaining the value of this work. The document is 1-2 pages and will be completed in the first Doctoral Project course, PSY 89997A.
Project, giving the reader sufficient information about the work you are proposing, about the way you plan your research, and the value of this work. Your Research Topic Proposal should contain the following parts:
Title – This is a brief precise phrase rendering the main problem of your Research Topic Proposal (up to 80 characters spaces included)
Problem Statement– Include the purpose of the project in a clearly defined problem statement. Include the research question(s) you intend to answer. This should be a description of the actual work you are planning to accomplish and concrete ways of doing it (theoretical and research basis).
Importance to Psychology – Describe the value this project’s results may bring to the field of psychology
Historical Background – This is a section where you describe your predecessors’ deeds in the field you are studying now. Note that all information taken from different sources is to be cited and subsequently referenced
Annotated Bibliography – Here is your reference list, where you name all sources you have referred to or cited. Include a summary of the importance of the information to your project rather than a synopsis of what those researchers did. Note that the items should go in an alphabetical order. Antidepressants
“We are in the midst of a change in how the public views antidepressant and other psychotropic medications. It is our obligation to understand and, if possible, clarify these issues” (Forand & DeRubeis, 2013, p. 4).
Although best-known for his movies, American actor Tom Cruise created headlines when he openly criticized actress Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants (Associated Press, 2005). Cruise’s criticism angered many individuals and spawned a continued public debate about the use of psychoactive medications. Although many individuals disagreed with the manner in which Cruise presented his opinion and the rationale he used to support it, the controversy regarding the efficacy of antidepressants is not only active, it continues to grow.
In their article, Forand and DeRubeis refer to the antidepressant controversy—an increasingly critical conversation because the number of patients using antidepressant medications is steadily increasing. Are antidepressant medications being prescribed appropriately and are they an effective treatment for depression? These are two questions Forand and DeRubeis address in their comprehensive summary of studies examining the effectiveness of antidepressants.
As you read the Forand and DeRubeis article, examine it critically from the perspective of a clinician and in relation to the other resources for this week.
Post by Day 4 a critique of the Forand and DeRubeis article from the point of view of a clinician. In your critique, be sure to explain the key issues in the article and cite limitations of statistical analyses of clinical outcomes. Support your critique with references to this week’s resources.

The PROGRAM may be of the your choosing, provided it falls within the following criteria:

• Event length is recommended to be only one afternoon or one evening; definitely not more than one weekend
• Minimum of 45 in attendance, maximum 2500
• Please, no conferences or conventions. Consumer shows are acceptable, but again, these are more complex events.
• Food and beverage must be included (may be served or as concession)<br>
• There must be a “wow” factor that will encourage people to remember the event. Occasionally this may be done by the quality of food, but for this assignment, it must go beyond this and include décor, program SCHEDULE and/or content, setting, etc.<br>
• Weddings, wedding receptions, anniversary parties, quinceaneras, bar/bat mitzvahs, are not allowed, as there are special considerations for them which are not covered in this class. All material covered in this COURSE can be applied to such social event planning, but the goal in this course is to provide a broader base of knowledge; weddings and social events are more thoroughly covered in “Social Events” course.<br>

A strong emphasis should be given to creativity. This is worth 650 points, so obviously it is the big project of the course. Note that this is NOT an academic report – this is a presentation for consideration by a client, and its format and design should reflect that. Material to be included:<br>

Approaches to Analyzing Literature

Background:
As I have mentioned previously, a piece of literature is likely to have more than one theme. You have found themes by taking note of the meaning that you and the author together create as you encounter the text (Reader Response approach to analysis) and you have found themes by analyzing the way that literary devices work to bring certain ideas to light (Formalist approach to analysis) . In this unit on the novel, you are going to gain experience seeing literature from the perspective of someone who aligns himself/herself with a particular school of thought. Literary scholars often do, over the course of many years of reading and studying literature, come to see patterns in the sorts of things they attach to and which seem meaningful when interpreting and analyzing the texts. There are several of these “schools of thought” or approaches in literary criticism/analysis. In this unit you have been introduced to a six of these approaches to add on to the Formalism and Reader Response approaches which you have already learned about and practiced using.
Any of these (now) eight approaches could be used to good effect to locate and prove a theme in JM Coetzee’s novel Disgrace.
The question is—which of these schools of thought do you find particularly fruitful, fun, interesting? Which one or two help you to really hone in on a theme, an overall message about humanity, life, how things work, etc.
Your Task:
After familiarizing yourself with the approaches to literary criticism you read about it Writing about Literature, pgs. 181-194, and now that you have read part of the novel Disgrace, choose two approaches to apply to the work.
Write a 6-8 page essay that discusses what you take as one of the primary, overall meanings in Disgraceand how you have come to that conclusion.
Your reasons for coming to that conclusion about meaning should clearly utilize two of the approaches you have been presented with as support for this meaning that you gleaned. (You do not need to explicitly state those approaches in the body of your essay though you may if you choose. A title is also a good place to offer this sort of preparation as well. It should be clear by your discussion which two you chose.) Support your thesis about the overall meaning with evidence from the book as well as from any elements that are relevant given your chosen approach, using the techniques of summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting as appropriate to your claims. (Some of you, depending on which approach you chose, will find a small amount of outside research to be in order whereas others will find no need for any additional reading/research.)
**As you read and re-read sections of the book, take note (literally, in the margins would be good) of places where you find evidence to support a theory.
Additional Guidelines:
• Only use Formalism or Reader Response in combination with another theory. However, you may choose to focus on just one theory as long as that theory is one of the others besides Reader Response and Formalism.
• Make sure to include a works cited page at the end. This will be fairly straightforward. If you use any outside texts, make sure those are included as well, though you may find that you only work with Disgrace and Writing about Literature.

• Make sure you have an original title that reflects your main purpose.
