Essay # 2: Your choice

Choose at least two readings we did from the Robert Coles book, A LIFE IN MEDICINE. You can check the syllabus for which ones we covered.

In an essay of three to five pages, plus works cited, tell the story of your relationship to the readings. Think about our 4 questions (Who is speaking? In what body? In what culture? Telling what stories of relationship?). Speak as yourself, identifying that self and the body and culture(s) you inhabit.

Questions to ponder but not necessarily answer:
• Which pieces stuck out for me and why?
• Where are the examples of powerful language?
• How do these pieces and their powerful quotes intersect with my lived experience of illness, healing, etc. (Your own or someone else’s)?

To write an essay in a natural, real voice, on your own informed authority, with the conviction and confidence that arises from attentive reading, creative thinking, and personal engagement with the texts.

PROCEDURE
1. Begin by reading the quote over and over again, several times. Then, putting the quote aside, spend 5 minutes responding to the quote. (What strikes you about it? What other texts come to mind when you think about it? What other things/people/events come to mind?)
2. Skim through and note passages that strike you. Find five or six of these. Maybe you already have some of these in your notes. Check back through your reading notes to see what struck you the first time through.

3. Copy one at the top of a sheet of paper. Read it over as many times as you feel you need to, then write for 5 to 7 minutes on that quote. (E.g., How would you describe the passage? What strikes you? What else comes to mind? What feelings does it bring up in you? What else does it remind you of?)

Question: Religious texts, regardless of faith, provide us with advice on how to live, show a glimpse of history, and most importantly set social norms and rules. Two most important pieces of historical literature by which most Indian adhere to are the Laws of Manu & The Ramayan. The Laws of Manu sets strict guidelines on the place in society for both men and women. The Ramayan details the life of Ram and Sita. This paper will be from a more feminist view point and will focus on the role, portrayal, & the hardships women have to face to be the ideal daughter/wife/partner. How has historical texts changed on how women were viewed in the past and currently? Are women still subjugated and oppressed? Or are women taking a stance and breaking social norms to prove that they are just as worthy & capable as men?

Economic Ideologies Response Paper Requirements:

Some pundits, academics, and politicians often talk about the “unintended consequences” of global capitalism. Others argue that there is nothing unintended about capitalism’s consequences – that those in power are fully aware of the potential results, including financial crises like the one that shook the global economy in 2008 and continues to plague people’s of all nations (Naomi Klein makes such an argument).
In a succinct, clearly written, three-page double-spaced essay that uses multiple historical examples from not only Klein, and Fulcher but from other readings, lecture notes, answer the following question:
