Course Summary
4. Over the course of the semester, we have studied quite a few ideas on how exactly people develop their gender. We have looked at physical influences, feminist and developmental theories, social influences, etc. throughout the life span. We have also explored different ways that our sex and gender affect our lives (e.g., experiences in school, religion, personal relationship, job selection/experiences, health, deviance/crime, politics, etc.). Now that you have had some time to think about it, how do you personally think that people develop their gender? How does sex/gender impact us? In your own life, how have sex and gender limited you or allowed you to act in a certain way or get involved in particular kinds of activity?

“The ideas of home and family are important in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey.”Discuss and demonstrate.

Sample Thesis

Read the two thesis statements below for a sense of what central idea would make for an overall better paper.

Weak or Poor Thesis

“The ideas of home and family are important in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey.”

(Notice that this thesis makes a statement that is obvious to any reader of the poem. It is therefore not an original idea that needs to be demonstrated, and every thesis needs to be demonstrated.)

Stronger Thesis

“Virgil’s Aeneid participates in the widespread privileging of masculinity by showing that the formation of Roman identity and virtue comes at the expense not simply of women but more specifically of the feminine voice.”

(Notice that this thesis does not simply describe what happens in the text, but speaks to its meaning and broader significance. It is also a point that needs to be shown by careful argumentation.)
