By writing this essay, you should have read the book “American Environmental History” by Warren.
Please write an essay answer to both of the following two questions. Your answers should be typed and double spaced.
Certain assumptions about nature, that it is most readily found in places like “wilderness,” where humanity’s hand is

hardest to see, have had a powerful influence, arguably not always so positive, on how Americans treat the natural

world. How may we use history better to think through what our relationship with the environment has become, as

well as what it should be?

Your essay, while including its own intro and conclusions, should address the points below:

a. As part of your intro, please answer: Why has the quest for a “wilderness” itself; according to William

Cronon, become an environmental problem?

b. The next, main part of your essay examines what it might mean to heed Cronon’s call to address those

problems with nature or environments extending closer to, even inside, our homes. Consider two of these

three major, potentially damaging connections that Americans such as yourself, in the course of their

ordinary home life, may have had with the natural world. Summarize the American history of these two

ways of connecting with nature over the last century and a half.

a. Through the water you drink and otherwise use:

i. How do your own water uses, and their resulting environmental impacts, differ from those

of most Americans in the early to mid190′ century?

b. Through your main means of transportation:

i. How does your main means of transportation, and its resulting environmental impacts,

differ from those of most Americans in the early to mid- l9th century?

c. Through the food you eat:

i. How do your own choices of food, and their resulting environmental impacts, differ from

those of most Americans in the early to mid- 19th century?

c. As part of your conclusion please then answer: Do you think your water use, transportation, and/or food

choices (whichever you’ve written about) has a greater impact on the natural world than those of early 19th

Americans? Has it became harder, or easier, to become aware of these impacts? To improve or ameliorate

them?

This is a dissertation proposal, relating to matters in cross cultural communication.
1.The specific research question has not been determined. But there is a general area of interest : A cross-cultural comparison among British and Chinese consumers, investigate culture factors impacts the attitude of luxuries . Firstly, narrow down this topic,and decide a specific research question.
