Can Woman Be A Good President, Why Or Why Not?
In the world, a question as to whether women can make good presidents is inevitable. In America, there has not been any woman president in history although some of them have shown interest. In the 18th century, Victoria Woodhull became the first nominated female president in America. A few years later the Equal rights party nominated Belva Lockwood as another female presidential candidate. The two women had an outstanding personality that exhibited determination and courage. Nonetheless, their nomination was not without controversial arguments that made them seem incompetent and vulnerable to ridicule. Up to date, women’s hard work, qualification or impressiveness is not enough for individuals to consider women as serious and promising contenders. Until there is an increase in a positive attitude towards women, there is no certainty that voters will ever elect a female president. However, an encouraging percentage of people claim that they would vote for a female president (Dye, Thomas 127). With time, people are likely to endorse the women leadership especially because the issue of gender inequality is slowly diminishing. This paper will talk about women presidency and the people’s view of the presidency. Further, it will outline the opinion of both parties who advocate and discriminate against women presidency. This paper will give argumentative views and opinions that women can make good presidents if given a chance.
In the United States of America, voting was not permitted for women but was rather strictly restricted for men. In 1920, the American women got the right to vote but continued to remain underrepresented, for not many women showed interest in the presidency. The number of women in the political level is not even a half of the number of men. Women at the Senate level are at least 14% while those in the other political levels represent only 15%. These political figures have barely increased for decades now and could remain for a longer period. A research shows that women have maintained this figures for a long while. In the national congress, only two women have held the cabinet position (Martin, Janet 19). Similarly, only six women have held the ministerial position in the government, not a good number. Very few women have had the privilege of holding the cabinet secretarial and senatorial position. In some states, the American government has limited women to particular areas such as school affairs, welfare health, and libraries. Nevertheless, nowadays the numbers of political women in the U.S are growing as more political parties embrace the idea of women leadership.
Opposing Views against Women’s Presidency
Paxton, Pamela, and Melanie (112) argue that there are several factors that contribute and hinder women from climbing the political ladder. These elements could expound on why woman president in America is rare. The following are factors supporting that women cannot be good presidents. First and foremost, America faces the issue of gender inequality whereby men view women as weaker sexes. In the early 1970’s, the American women held only 5% of elective offices in the political arena. The small percentage is because individuals had an adverse attitude towards women in leadership. Till now there is still some negative attitude towards women who are interested in political leadership especially the presidency. From a psychological point of view, men will always be superior to women even as time and circumstances changes. These opinions have caused women to come out as inferior, incompetent, and incapable of leading the country. In America, women face a few difficulties that make them seem as though they are not good enough for leadership. Additionally, the family theory has contributed to the issue that women cannot make a good president in America. This theory suggests that women are incapable of performing challenging tasks, in this case, the presidency. Further, it explains that most women after going for maternity leave are likely to lose their skillfulness, as well as energy. Hence, it is not very sensible to put a woman in charge of a country. Klenke, Karin (213) argue that it is very insensible to have an unstable leader, in this case, a woman who keeps taking a leave to take care of her family. Women being very tender and emotionally attached put their families first which is very ethical but risky for the country. It is this theory that has caused individuals to lose their trust and have reduced their expectations for women. Well, presidency is one of the most demanding jobs, and any person that is incapable of satisfying the demands is simply not good enough.
Secondly, based on the conservative and religious point of view, the majority of persons believe that leadership is strictly for men and not women. In the past decades, women mostly played the role of housewives and took care of their children and homes. Some people have passed those traditions to the present decade hence hindering women’s presidency. Some Christians basing their facts from the bible argue that God divinely ordained leadership for men to rule over women. Furthermore, some people claim that God put men in charge of their families as the head of the family; hence, it would be unreasonable to put women in charge of a country. Nevertheless, some critics argue that the same indicates that both male and female are made one in Christ, and so leadership is for all. These views have not had a significant impact on leadership as women are taking the leadership positions in businesses and other sectors ( Klenke, Karin 156). Thirdly, there is only a few women who have taken part in the political arena. Most of the American women have settled for smaller and less engaging duties. From the 18th to the current century, the number of female candidacies cannot compare to male candidacy by far. Women presidents have the likelihood of receiving negative views when they take up the leadership position (Dye, Thomas 14). These negative opinions come about because women are perceived to be very emotional and lack aggressiveness. Women have attached their emotions to the society and, therefore, are likely to base their political decisions on societal preferences. Well, a good leader should not act according to the majority’s concerns but should rather act in the best interest of the country.
Why Women should be presidents
Flexibility
First, women can be good presidents because they are very social, collaborative, and less hierarchical hence flexible and able to take up changes as they come. Such behavioral characteristics make women competent and excellent leaders in the political setup. The sociable and collaborative character in women makes them even better leaders for can easily identify with the needs of the citizens. Without these qualities, it is difficult for any president to identify and understand the needs of his subject. To add on this, a country like America is under constant growth and women have a very malleable way of thinking and acting. Hence, in case there are any social, economic or global changes, a woman will adjust quickly to these changes (Dye, Thomas 211).
Constructiveness
Women have an additional constructive quality that makes them want to improve not only their lives but also those of others. Scientific studies indicate that women are very emotional and likely to bring about a happy environment. Female presidents will not tolerate misconducts such as child abuse, rape, as well as murder. She will also address the societal problems such as poverty and diseases. For these reasons, the female president will make sure that the country is safe, and the people are comfortable. It is a woman’s ability to connect emotionally with the society that makes her an eligible candidate for presidency (Dye, Thomas 231).
Integrity and Work Performance
Klenke and Karin (110) argue that both men and women have equal abilities in decision-making and job performance. The two researchers continue to say that the differences, however, come out clearly in the leadership methods and styles applied during decision-making. For instance, men are very straight forward and will make their decisions based on reason and will consider other people’s emotions. On the other hand, the women are very sensitive and are more likely to attach their emotions to the decision-making process. Therefore, women make their decisions based on other people’s needs and preferences. Women are very loyal to their subject and have the intention of fulfilling their desires if possible. As a result, women perform their duties and make their decisions based on honesty, loyalty, and integrity. Research shows that women are less corrupt and perform their tasks carefully to avoid any fraud or misconduct. For instance, a woman president will not make a decision that is likely to affect her subjects negatively. Clearly, a woman is not self-centered, and her primary aim is to meet everyone’s needs if possible.
Fourthly, women in their presidential leadership position are more democratic, cooperative, friendly and less dictatorial. Hence, they are more likely to transform the lives of their subjects and even give rewards as a way of appreciation. This transformation enhances the self-esteem of the involved individuals and betters their determination and performance. Likewise, the sensitive and emotional character in women will cause them to take effective measures against criminals. A woman will not stand an injustice in her surrounding much less when she is the president. In America, women’s style of leadership is very advantageous as it is bases its priorities on people, role modeling, and clear expectations (Klenke, Karin 230).
In addition, women can implement the transformational method of leadership because they can combine both feminine and masculine abilities (Paxton, Pamela, and Melanie 116). Women accept and adjust to change very quickly and, therefore, have no problem with new methods of leadership. As America keeps growing and changing, there could be a need for change on the styles and methods of leadership. Hence, women are very innovative and efficient problem-solvers since they’re not afraid to change their styles. The few female political leaders like Hilary Clinton have a remarkable performance despite the fact that women are not many in the political setting. Theoretically, several researchers have proven that women are not risk takers. Women are very cautious and are not likely to make a decision that will put its country under risk. Therefore, the female presidents will not put their subjects under risk of financial losses or war between states. Further, women think carefully and consult other people before making any decisions. Therefore, the chance of a female president putting her subject under risk is very minimal. It can, therefore, be argued that a state under a woman president is safe, prosperous and likely to move forward economically.
Conclusion
Conclusively, the issues of gender, men-leadership mentality, and female chauvinism should not be a hindrance for female presidency. The few elected political leaders in parliamentary seats have done tremendous work in their respective fields. Women can perform very well in the presidential seat because of their remarkable qualities. It is certain that there has not been any female president in America because the citizens have not given them a chance. The State’s citizens should give the women an opportunity to showcase their abilities as presidents. The fact that women are democratic, authentic and sociable is enough to make them suitable candidates for presidency (Paxton, Pamela, and Melanie 312). It is a truism that women are less confident and aggressive, but that is a condition that is subject to change and improvement. Women can as well acquire some additional skills such as communication skills to help them fit in the male-dominated setting.
Given a chance, the American women can serve America with enthusiasm, honesty, and democracy. Therefore, the political doors should remain open for interested women, and the citizens should be optimistic and embrace women presidency. The political sector is very encouraging nowadays for it has accommodated both male and female politicians. There is hope that someday a female president will lead America (Dye, Thomas 411). Nonetheless, no one can tell when for sure. There is increasing confidence that the woman presidency can bring America to its goal and cause significant achievements amongst its citizens.
