Let’s begin with the assumption that Putnam and others are correct in their assertion that civic engagement and social capital have been declining in recent decades. Given the measurement problems and conceptual vagueness attributed to social capital, this may prove to be a bad assumption on our part. Nevertheless, let’s assume it is true. Do online social networks affect the levels of social capital in society? Clearly repeated online interaction is not the same as repeated face-to-face interaction. However, given the low costs and ease associated with online interaction, can the overall effect be the same? I. Sites of Memory Prompt; Answer two questions.

1. As clearly as possible, reiterate Winter’s thesis and argue for or against it, or modify it. It may be helpful (but not necessary) to situate him with Paul Fussell’s work, which he mentions.

3. Winter notes a number of artists and writers as carriers of the war’s “apocalyptic” vision. Which one of these artists or writers struck you the most, and why?

Purpose: In order to gain practice understanding legal jargon, students will review court cases and summarize the facts from the case in a brief. Writing briefs will also help the deepen the students’ understanding of specific issues affecting public administration.

Objective:
