Women as Ghosts in Japanese movies and Tradition
The origins of Japanese Horror
We’ve just watched one of the classics of Japanese Cinema – Ugetsu.
But this comes from a long tradition of Female Ghost Stories. For this essay, you are to EXPLORE the role of Female Ghosts in Japan, and what this might say about the role of women in general as they are used for the surface on which to explore gender relations in modern day Japan.
Your reference materials include watching another movie – Either Masaki Kobayashi’s 1965 Kwaidan (4 ghosts stories), or Nichiei Shinsha’s Kuroneko (1968), or the early horror film Ghost of Oiwa (1961).
Analyze how women are portrayed, why they are vengeful, why they are to be feared, and WHY this has currency in the 1960s? In Contrast, who are the villians in US horror?
1) Is it fair to say, the conceptual framework is a tool with several different variations? One use is the conceptual framework is used to organize distinctions within the study. A narrative is developed by the researcher explaining how the researcher views the study.
2) Do you worldviews have anything to do with the framework? Do you think that likeminded researchers with the same worldview use the same framework?
3) Do these likeminded researchers believe that events happen because of their worldview or the current knowledge of the field of study?
4) Do you believe that the author’s worldview has anything to do with the framework? Do you think that two likeminded researchers would use the same framework?
5) Do these likeminded researchers believe that events happen because of the same reason that is guided by their worldview?
6) I agree with your reasoning and the steps you take. Rendering out the themes is something that I did not think of but makes perfect sense. But, linking the relationship between the study and the theory is important because without that link what is the point of having the theory?
