When an individual is convicted of a crime, he is guaranteed counsel, he has the possibility of getting out on bail, and generally he has the option of making a plea bargain. We often accept such concepts without question. The utilization and fairness of these concepts should not be taken as a given.
Write a research paper in which you consider each of the three facets noted above, using the questions below as a guide, and conclude by making your own assessment about our criminal process.
A) What sources of legal services are available for the indigent? Which is the most widely used? Which provides the best service? (It may help to think about what kind of legal assistance you would hope the jurisdiction would provide you were you unable to afford your own counsel). Ultimately, do these resources keep indigents from being disadvantaged in a court of law or not? And even if you believe that such resources help give everyone a fair chance, and are the resources in great enough supply to satisfy the demand? Or is it that only the rich can afford a fair trial? Finally, if you were lucky enough to be the latter, what steps you would take to select an attorney to advise and defend yourself in a criminal prosecution?
B) Next, consider our bail system. What are the disadvantages to the accused when pretrial detention is used? Does it violate the rights of the incarcerated individuals? Or should pretrial release be abolished in order to keep those charged with committing the more serious crimes behind bars until they are sentenced? Does letting previously convicted criminals out on release violate the rights of possible innocent victims? When would you consider employing pretrial detention?
In addition, explain in what way, if at all, you would reform the bail system? (Be sure to take bail bondsmen and their rights into consideration here, as well.)Taking it further, were you to abolish bail, what other alternatives might you have? Which do you think is the most adequate? Is the system broken? What are your recommendations to fix the system?
C) Finally, consider plea-bargaining. Should it be abolished? Does the use of plea-bargaining cause additional crime? Is plea-bargaining a deterrent for those being sentenced? Ultimately, does plea-bargaining help or hinder the criminal justice system?

Chapter 15 and 16 discuss architecture and the design profession. Andrea Zittel’s work relates to both of these mediums. In Zittel’s bio on art21.org it states that, “Influenced by modernistdesign and architecture from the early twentieth century…Zittel creates clothing, furniture, homes and vehicles. Her sculptures and installationstransform everything necessary for life, such as eating, sleeping, bathing and socializing, into artful experiments…
Zittel continually reinvents her relationship with her environment.” Zittel’s work plays an interesting role in making the viewer question through design, how much we really need to exist. After viewing Andrea Zittel’s interview on Art 21, please answer the discussion questions below.

In relation to Zittel’s work, please discuss the difference in meaning between the words necessary and sufficient. Then, under the premise that you are asked to design a room in which you will live for one week, please list all items that will be both necessary and sufficient.
Discuss the pros and cons of isolation. Whatmakes a person want or need to seek isolation?What challenges would you expect Zittel to face during the month she lives on her island?

This week’s readings in Chapters 13 and 14, discuss the mediums of Sculpture and Crafts. Chapter 14 specifically notes the distinctions the art world struggles with in whether to consider crafts as fine art. The topic of craft as fine art, can be a controversial one. Artists who work in the medium of crafts today, are not necessarily creating work that is functional, which comes out of the tradition of crafts. One contemporary artist who utilizes and refers to the tradition of craft in his work to create sculptures and installations, is Martin Puryear. Please watch his Art 21 interview, and answer the discussion questions below.

Puryear talks about his respect for craft and the role of the craftsman in the creation of formal beauty rather than artistic beauty. Are there distinctions between art and craft? What are they?
Can an object created for a functional purpose achieve the status of art? Use an example from the text to support your answer. Please provide the full title, artist name and image number of the piece you are referring to.
Where do you stand on this issue of whether the crafts are fine art? Should crafts be considered a fine art, or in a category of its own?  justify your answer with examples.

Describe the key components of the legislation. Choose an ethical dilemma faced by either an accountant or lawyer; describe the situation and offer a recommendation as to how to address the issue in an ethical way. The entire paper should be approximately 5 pages.
