Social issues are matters which directly or indirectly affect a person or many members of a society and are considered to be problems, controversies related to moral values, or both. Under certain models of political issues, they are seen as distinct from economic issues.
Describe  why homelessness is classified as a social problem. What is your immediate reaction to seeing someone that you perceive as homeless? Do you blame them for their situation? Sociologists look at problems from all sides. At first it may seem that homelessness is solely the fault of the individual, but if you look deeper you will find other causes, such as lack of mental health care for the mentally ill. What are some other causes of homelessness? Do a little research. What programs and/or policies are in place in Mobile to fight homelessness? What other programs and/or policies do you think could be enacted to help fight homelessness? (If you are from a different area or country, please cite some programs that are available for the homeless where you are from)

This Thing Called Modernism

Modernist art and photography takes many forms, but because of this variation in style, subject, and meaning, it can be hard to understand. So lets work on this modernist idea together.
Lets start trying to pin down the issue of what makes a modernist work by discussing works of your choice (must be modernist works by photoraphers from readings) that you find on the Internet, that you think that is modernist and explain WHY or HOW it is modernist.

ADD an image in your post, identify Photographer, title, date and some citing your source.

Discuss what you think could be described as particularly modernist about the photo.

Based on the scenario presented below write a document for your PI (Dr. Woods) to review. Scenario:

You work as a research administrator for Dr. Woods. Her research involves the study of children ages 5-10. She needs money to renovate her lab/space to accommodate children with disabilities and to conduct research on children of the inner city and their social and health care needs. She is asking you to prepare 1) a list and description of at least five funding agencies she can apply to, and 2) requests that describe why you think these funding agencies are a good match for her research. She asks that you look on grants.gov to find potential sponsors.

Read the attached BMW case. Read only the main opinion, not the concurring or dissenting opinions. Prepare a case summary. You should have a good idea of how to extract the main points from a case.

Prepare a  paper discussing the relevance of the BMW case to business. Does it help or hurt business? What guidance would you offer a nationally-based business regarding its business practices of disclosure to end consumers? Specifically, what are the legal guidelines the court uses when imposing punitive damages? What business practices would you advise implementing to reduce the possibility of a court finding that your business violated those guidelines?

When you have completed reading the book, prepare a book review. A book review is an objective or subjective essay about a book; it is NOT a book report. A book review should:

1. Make clear what the author attempted to do and how well it was done.

• Who is the author, and what right has the author to be writing on this subject?

2. Convey an adequate idea of what the book has to offer.

• What are the subject, aim, and scope of the book?

• What seems to be the author’s purpose in writing the book?

• What are the thesis and main arguments?

• How does the book relate to this course? Organizational Theory

3. Leave an impression of the reviewer’s opinion of the book’s quality.

• What are the book’s major strengths and weaknesses?

• What contributions to knowledge/understanding does this book make?

• How does it compare to other books by the same author and/or on the same subject?

Research Essay

Course Description:
Life and death are the core universals for human beings, yet are the context for key contemporary debates, and a wide variety of practices and beliefs historically and culturally. Debates on such key topics as reproductive technologies, organ transplantation, and the ‘good death’ often encapsulate central social and cultural assumptions. This course explores such debates and assumptions through an examination of the cross-cultural nature of life and death in both western and non-western societies. Both birth and death have been core concerns of anthropology throughout its history, and continue to be the focus of research. Dominant themes of this course are the practices and beliefs at the start of life (conception, and birth), as well as at the end of life, including how connections are forged or severed between the living and the dead (aging, the process of death, grief, funerals and memorials, and the afterlife).
The Course is organised broadly into two parts: Life and Death. This course will cover material that at times will be confronting or even disturbing. It is often difficult to think about the death of ourselves or those whom we love. For some people this course may thus evoke uncomfortable feelings or memories. Yet the processes of coming into life and leaving life are core parts of human social experience, and hence worthy of anthropological attention.
