Do you think that the marketing to children is a social problem? Why? What must be done about it, if anything?

The Assignment: Students submit ONE 5 page paper, double-spaced. All papers should be in Times New Roman 12pt, with standard default margins.
The Topic: Students will watch the documentary Consuming Kids. They will address the following issues: Do you think that the marketing to children is a social problem? Why? What must be done about it, if anything? Use examples and a detailed argument.
Late Assignments: 2 points out of the total of 30 will be deducted for each day that an assignment is late. No exceptions other than for SERIOUS and DOCUMENTED reasons. (Doctors notes, notes from funeral home directors etc. MUST be provided for an exemption to be considered). This means that is may be simpler for you to just decide to do a later topic than provide an excuse for missing a due date. No papers will be accepted if they are over seven days late, unless substantiated with medical or other documentation.
Content:
All information must be properly cited in APA format. The paper will include information from:
1) The Film “Consuming Kids” must be used. It is viewable online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kY9LaCbrWXM
2) The course text must be used as a source. You may use any number of chapters you would like.
3) AT LEAST two peer-reviewed, academic journal articles must be used as a source (from UOIT library website). To find this, go to http://www.uoit.ca/sites/library/, click on the “Articles” tab, search, download the article/articles that best suit your paper.
4) You MAY use government websites, news, or magazine articles only if the information used is not already available in peer-reviewed journals.
5) Lecture notes are NOT acceptable as a source.
6) There is a marking rubric at the end of this document. This rubric must be copied and pasted to your paper after the bibliography. If you fail to do so, you will lose 2 points and will not receive an overall paper evaluation with comments – you will receive just a mark.

Prepare a detailed Tax Memorandum analyzing a specific tax scenario using Primary Federal Tax Law sources only.

 WRITING ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES
Tax Memo
Assume that you are a staff accountant working in the tax department of a Big 4 accounting firm. The
senior accountant in your firm approaches you with a tax issue asking you to do some tax research.
Prepare a detailed Tax Memorandum analyzing a specific tax scenario using Primary Federal Tax
Law sources only. Please write a tax memo to the senior accountant for one of the two research
problems below:
Research Problem 1 on page 5-41 (Murray whistleblower) (Problem will be highlighted and attached in additional materials).

Writing Requirements:
 Tax memos are short – no need to include separate headings. Please refer to Figure 2.6 and 2.7
in chapter 2 for examples of tax file memorandum.
 The memo should be at least 1 page but no more than 2 pages (single-spaced).
 Your memo should include separate paragraphs with a discussion about the relevant facts and
tax issues, citation of relevant code sections, one court case, and your conclusion.
 Provide clear and logical arguments for your conclusion. Your arguments will be supported by
the relevant IRC and the court case.
 Be sure to read the relevant chapter before completing the assignment. The textbook chapter
cites relevant code sections that you may want to look up and mention in your tax memo.
o Find one court case with similar circumstances and discuss the case briefly in your
memo to support your conclusion. Explain how the court case is similar to the relevant
facts of your client (i.e., the court case needs to discuss the same tax issue as your
clients’). The court case you find has to involve the IRS, the Commissioner, United
States as one of the parties. The case has to involve a tax issue.
 Clearly answer the question in the problem.
 No need to include Reference page. You need to include the citation of the primary tax law
source within the memo.
Tax research involves the following procedures:
1. Identify the tax issue
2. Discuss relevant facts and transactions
3. Identify appropriate tax law sources – cite primary sources only; include a court case examining
similar tax research question
4. Provide your conclusions and support your analysis with clear and logical arguments
5. Discuss any assumptions made in arriving at the solution
Tax Research Resources:
• Recommended: CSUSM Kellog Library has RIA Checkpoint database. Your books also come
with instructions and an access code to RIA Checkpoint. RIA is used by many public
accounting firms.

Other web sites that may be useful are:
• Cornell University Law School web site has the IRC:
www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26/subtitle-A/chapter-1
• IRS web site: www.irs.gov
• Court opinions: www.law.justia.com
Expectations
• You will be graded on the thoughtfulness of your discussion as well as on the writing quality.
• You will be graded on the persuasiveness of your arguments and whether your arguments are
well-supported by a tax court case and IRC.
• Proofread your paper for spelling and grammatical errors, and also check whether the paper
reads well. Consult a dictionary and/or a style manual for spelling and grammar problems.
• Avoid one-sentence paragraphs. By definition, a paragraph is a group of sentences constructed
around a central topic.
• Avoid contractions. Business reports (tax memos) should not use contractions. For example,
use “should not” instead of “shouldn’t.”
• Try to use the active voice rather than the passive voice. For example, instead of writing “This
case was decided by the Tax Court”, write, “The Tax Court decided this case.” Papers written
in the active voice read easier, and using the active voice also conserves words.
• Nouns and their modifying pronouns must agree. An example of incorrect grammar: “The
Supreme Court ruled in favor of the government. They rejected the argument of the taxpayer.”
“Court” is a singular noun while “they” is a plural pronoun.

Summarize the “overall message” or “story” each store communicates to customers through its merchandising and employees.

This assignment requires that you visit at least three brick-and-mortar retail stores Ralph Lauren. Select a set of stores that sell the same general product category. (Note that websites do not qualify; they must be physical facilities that you can visit.) Visit each of three at any point in the semester. Shop them through the eyes of a retail store merchandise buyer, as though you are responsible for the overall look of each store and how it supports the store’s branding and market position. Introduction
Provide an introductory paragraph stating the product category that is the focus of your analysis. Also state the date(s) and time(s) you visited each retail store.
Target Market

Justify your position in terms of strength of messages, consistency of presentation, impact of merchandise, ease of shopping experience, and responsiveness of sales associates.
Personal Insights
What insights did you have as a result of this exercise, or what did you learn from it?
One store i visited was in South Carolina Charleston Ralph Lauren. It consisted of 95% of African American employes. All had to wear Ralph Lauren clothing as their outfit, no music in the store. They had props such as mechanic dolls, horse saddles, polo sticks and retail clothing for summer was the majority and sales were on the winter clothing. Employes were friendly and willing to help it was one of the biggest stores i have visited out of the three.
The other store was in New york Manhattan. It had African American and white employes. All had to wear Ralph Lauren clothing as their outfit, no music in the store. Their props were the best they had a actually fake horse in the store with and mechanic doll on it playing polo. They also had the owners picture in the store at different events. Very helpful, kind and willing to assist in anyway possible. It was spring clothing as the majority sales through out the store with winter clothing on sale. This was the second biggest store i visited.
The last store was in Maine Freeport Ralph Lauren. Only one African American employe the rest were white. All had to wear Ralph Lauren clothing as their outfit, no music in the store. Few props had some polo sticks at most consisted more of mechanic dolls. Employes were helpful, willing to asset in any way possible. It was spring clothing as the majority sales through out the store with winter clothing on sale.
Each store had few different items that the other store did not. They had the same marketing plan such as email, or paper mail to advertise if you give them their information. My favorite store was the one in New York, second in South Carolina and third would be in Maine.

Write a 1-2-page feasibility memo to your boss as someone who appropriately would take this action, for instance, a sales manager, a company vice president, a marketing executive, etc.

 Find an existing set of product manual instructions–either a hard copy or a downloaded document. The important thing is that it should be an actual existing document–you are NOT writing a set of instructions. The document should not be a page or less like how to make a bowtie, or how to fold a paper airplane, but not more than five pages–nothing overly complex.
Next, read and critically evaluate the document using the following criteria:
1) Completeness of information
2) Graphic layout and display of information, visuals, headings, etc.
3) Clarity of language and writing style
4) Cultural or legal factors that might cause confusion or misuse.
Please submit your evaluation on 1-2 pages, plus the instructions.
(( The second Part))
This task is a bit more challenging and relies on knowledge of the nature and purpose of a feasibility study/report. Please refer to the section in the textbook, or go online to read material about feasibility.
Simply, feasibility answers the question: will doing something work? Is it practical? Realistic? Often the answer comes down to three things: money and cost effectiveness, time, and labor. An idea might sound great on paper but be impractical.
Your task is to think about the company you created, about an action you want to undertake–product revision, product development, market growth, a new service, facility expansion, etc.
Write a 1-2-page feasibility memo to your boss as someone who appropriately would take this action, for instance, a sales manager, a company vice president, a marketing executive, etc. Use proper memo format to explain to the boss why this is a good idea. Address the following criteria:
1) Business background–a reminder of what products and services you offer, locations, etc.
2) Marketing feasibility–do you want to put anyone out of business or expand market niche.
3) Financial feasibility–do you have the resources to undertake the project, or is a loan needed, will you be at risk.
4) Technical feasibility–are new facilities needed, expansion, new equipment and machinery.
5) Organizational feasibility–is a new layer of management needed, new specialized personnel, new identity and role for the company
