This 2-4 page Midterm Essay Exam is worth 5% of your final grade. The purpose of this essay is to develop a convincing argument that analyzes literature in a thoughtful manner. Your analysis should demonstrate you are familiar with literary terms and concepts explored in The Norton Introduction to Literature and the writing strategies examined in the handouts “Literary Analysis vs. Plot Summary” and “Writing about Literature.”

You are an adviser on economic matters to a state governor or the leader of any country. Write that person a brief advisory of the economic conditions in his state or country (Choose a U.S. state or country of your choice) . In your advisory, you should use current economic data to develop a picture of the area’s economic conditions and potential. This section should display your positive skills as an economist who can search relevant databases, read publish reports and discover economic indicators to measure the performance of your selected economy.
The second part of this advisory will consist of your advice to your client as to steps that can be taken to improve the standard of living and improve or stabilize or to maintain the economy on a good economic trajectory. Here, you are acting in a normative capacity. Your advice, while based on your norms, should be practical and implementable. Your reforms should seek to address problems indicated in the previous section. They can include both fiscal and monetary changes; political, social, educational and reforms aimed at improving administration, reducing red tape and promoting a good business environment.

The economic indicators used should include some of the following:
-GDP and Per capita GDP (current and trends)
-Inflation and trends.
-Main industries, exports and imports and their contributions to GDP. -Poverty ratios or indicators and trends.
-Population(current, trends and any indication of potential problems e.g. aging, low or high birth rates, etc.
-Employment and unemployment – numbers and rates.
-Labor force participation rate.
-Occupational Employment.
-Wages.
-Indicators of education achievement of the population. -Indebtedness of the central government or state.
_Indicators of the general heath of the population i.e. data on infant mortality, life expectancy at birth, prenatal death.
-Size of foreign direct investment or investment from out of state or incentives to attract outside investors.
-Government policy as a contributory factor to development.
-Taxes- and whether they pose an inducement.

Using a major public health crisis of emergency that occurred since the year 2000, students must comprehensively critique the response to the event. Students should comment on the core topics introduced in TM5563 at JCU.
