In healthcare we have the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996(HIPAA); in consumer transactions we have the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Our banks and financial institutions bombard us with Privacy Protection information on a routine basis.
In education, the privacy act is called Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA) which is overseen by the US Department of Education.The protection of privacy is ubiquitous in the United States.

While right now, you should be concerned about FERPA as a student, you need to begin to look at FERPA compliance from the faculty point of view. How does FERPA impact teaching practices and grading?
