When Andrew started working at the local print shop, he got along with everyone. As a supervisor he tried to stay friends with the people who worked for him. Soon after, a new supervisor, Gina, was hired to manage the shipping department. One day Andrew heard Gina use a racial slur. Then Andrew started noticing that Gina would eat only with people of her own race and gender. He heard her make another racist remark. He ignored her, but he shared his concerns with coworkers questioning whether a racist should be managing other people. Andrew discussed Gina’s behavior with his supervisor but she did not see enough evidence of racism to do anything about it.

Drawing on your reading from chapter 2, answer the following questions in an essay format: a) Identify and discuss thoroughly the three principles of symbolic interaction. Which symbolic interaction principle explains Andrew’s behavior toward Gina? Family history is important in shaping the current generation (Berniece and Boy Willie) in August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson; the same could be said for the impact of family history—particularly racial history—in shaping Natasha Trethewey as she presents herself in her poetry. Both Wilson and Trethewey show us attempts to reclaim or make something positive of that history as well. Compare and contrast how the authors deal with family history in The Piano Lesson by August Wilson and “Miscegenation” by Trethewey and “South” by Trethewey.

A couple of books that are required to be incorporated are “The Economics of Looking at Behavior” , An economic analysis of Marital Instability” “More Sex is Safer Sex” and “A Treatise on the Family”.

The reading “Unauthorized fun at work (Goofing Off): Predictors and Implications” presents an application of quantitative research methodology. Discuss whether or not quantitative research methodology is appropriate for this study. How might this research question have been addressed using qualitative research methods?
