LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS REPORT
Interview an ESOL student for speech analysis. You must record this interview and transcribe it as you hear it (with errors). The person you select should be at the level of intermediate fluency. You should not get a beginner because your learner may not say very much, or an advanced learner because you may not have many errors to analyze.
1. Explain to the person that you are working on a project (without being specific as to the object of your study to avoid unnatural speech.) 2. Some interviewees might be afraid to talk and others might talk artificially. If this is the case, just thank them and find somebody else. 3. Make sure the student feels comfortable. Tell him/her that this is not a test, but rather an opportunity for you to record a language sample. 4. Get consent from your speaker to record the conversation and ask him/her to state this consent on the interview. 5. This must be a real 2-3 minute interview. 6. After recording the interview, you must analyze the speech for errors of phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon. 7. Write a report on your findings (5 pages, double-spaced, font 12) Here are some questions you may want to ask your interviewee:
What do you like/dislike most about school or job? 2. Tell me about your family or your job 3. Tell me about the country where you were born. 4. Tell me about what you like and what you dislike about the United States.
