There should be at least ten slides in your Microsoft PowerPoint as well as a title slide and a slide listing all your sources for creating this slideshow. You should also create speaker notes for each slide of your presentation, which include the main talking points for the topic addressed on the slide. Save the presentation as AU_PSY350_M3_A2_LastName_FirstInitial.ppt. Submit your assignment to the M3 Assignment 2 LASA 1 Dropbox.

In order to create your slideshow, review the two case studies and then answer the questions following each case study:

Case Study 1: Isaac is a fifty-nine-year-old man. Several months ago, he noticed a slight tremor in his hands. He assumed this to be a normal consequence of aging. The tremor, however, gradually worsened, along with some muscular stiffness and slowness in initiating movement. The tremor was more pronounced when he was not voluntarily moving. Isaac was referred to a neurologist, who diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease. After visiting the neurologist, Isaac and his family ask you to further explain this disorder. Isaac also asks about L-dopa as a treatment—the neurologist had mentioned L-dopa as an effective medication but had instead prescribed selegiline:

What are the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease?
What are the possible causes? Be sure to discuss both hereditary and environmental factors thought to contribute to this disease.
What parts of the brain does this disease affect?
Why do you think the neurologist prescribed selegiline instead of L-dopa?

LASA 2: Rehabilitation and Community Corrections

One of the problems that you will face in the real world is that of public perception of rehabilitation and community corrections programs. Intermediate sanctions are mechanisms and programs that relate to the supervision of criminal offenders not under strict confinement or incarceration. Gaining support from the public for these programs requires well-documented presentations that are accessible to general audiences and can drive powerful support and ultimately funding for rehabilitation and community corrections programs.

Instructions:

You have been granted an internship at the Centervale Corrections Authority. Your first task is to research and draft a presentation that will be used to educate citizens and to gain support for funding rehabilitation and intermediate sanctions, better known as community corrections programs.

In order to make this accessible for long-term use, you are instructed to create a presentation that will not only educate the local citizens but build their understanding of the benefits of rehabilitation and ultimately gain support for community corrections programs in Centervale. Keep in mind that you are soliciting the support of the citizens and that you seek their suggestions and recommendations.

Some of the rehabilitation and community corrections issues you will examine include rehabilitation issues associated with gender, culture, race, ethnicity, gang activity, and criminal organizations within the prison system. You will recommend rehabilitation and community corrections programs that will improve the success rate for rehabilitation in Centervale’s prison populations. Your presentation will be an 8- to 10-slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with script and will include the following:

Analyze research regarding rehabilitation in corrections and support your presentation with empirical research.
Examine the difficulty of implementing rehabilitation programs in the correctional environment and include expected timelines, outcomes, and assessments.
Examine the rehabilitation issues associated with gender, culture, race, ethnicity, gang activity, and criminal organizations within prison systems.
Recommend rehabilitation and community corrections programs that will improve the success rate for rehabilitation in Centervale’s prison populations and include opportunities to solicit citizens’ suggestion

Targeting of Crime Prevention Programs

Our course text addresses targeting crime prevention programs towards individuals (Chapter 3), groups (Chapter 4), or the community (Chapter 5). Select one of these, and address the strengths and weaknesses of a crime prevention strategy focused at individuals, groups, or the community. How will the crime prevention strategy contribute to social and criminal justice?

Respond each of the following question with a 200 WORD COUNT EACH. The initial post should 1) draw on key concepts from the book, 2) respond to each component of the question (most questions have multiple prompts), 3) demonstrate critical thinking and evaluation of the topic, and 4) incorporate an outside resource that relates to the question/response. 2. What did Stanley Milgram seek to test in his experiments at Yale University? What were the results? Do you think that the findings would be similar today? Why or why not? What are the ethical concerns of the study?

3. What is meant by the term “global elite?” Who are the members of the global elite, and how do they differ from the upper-class elites described in Chapter 7? Why are the global elite “not limited by borders?” In your response provide examples of members of the global elite as well as evidence to support your response.

5. Discuss how race is more a sociological classification than a biological one. Provide situations in which an individual’s race may be mistaken or taken for granted. In the United States the key stratifying variable is race; in Europe it is SES (socioeconomic status). Why do you think there is this difference?

6. What is a “credential society?” Is there too much of an emphasis on credentials in the United States? If so, how might this be harmful? To whom? Discuss education in the U.S. from the point of view of a functionalist or conflict theorist. Also use examples from the text in your answer.

7. Chambliss discusses several theories of state power in the reading this week. Identify and describe at least two of those theories. Would you say that the U.S. governance today is characterized more by pluralism or by the concentration of power in the hands of an elite? Provide examples or evidence to support your answer.

8. Chambliss discusses the efforts to revitalize the economically distressed urban core in several major cities. What are the potential effects of urban renewal and gentrification on the economy and current residents of the neighborhood? How can urban renewal be balanced with the needs of the residents who may be displaced? For those who have lived in a city, do you have examples that support or contradict the description of urban renewal from the reading?

Ethics in Research and Communication

In a paper of 1,250 words, discuss at least three ethical considerations regarding research and its presentation.

Include in your paper a section discussing the mechanisms in place for the monitoring and ensuring ethical practice. Refer to at least five credible sources. Be sure to include the Belmont Report when discussing ethical practice.

4. What are three critiques that Spitzer launched against Rosenhan’s study?

5. Whose argument did you find more convincing, overall? In other words, having read these pieces, to what degree do you believe that a diagnostic system is useful for treating persons with emotional and/or psychological distress? Please be specific about why believe that either Rosenhan or Spitzer was more convincing, drawing on both their arguments and your own thinking about the issue.

8. Use Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced. Insert page numbers, preferably on the bottom right of the page. Do not right justify.

9. Proofread carefully for typos of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and awkward or unclear sentences. These are common errors of haste that can make reading your work difficult and will affect your grade. Use complete sentences. Proofread your work several times carefully. Omit needless words. (This webpage is an invaluable source of good writing style; reading or at least consulting it will be of great benefit to you.)

10. It will be assumed that you have read and understood the course text Writing Philosophy by Lewis Vaughn. Follow the guidelines provided in this book in writing your paper, as well as the ten criteria from the Paper Rubric on Moodle.

11. Format your paper according to Appendix A of the Vaughn book, (though do not use a title page) and document according to Appendix B. Other methods of citing sources are acceptable, though consult instructor to be sure.
