Scenario

You have been asked to create an action plan and facility design that will integrate spiritual, religious, therapeutic, and health care functions into a new, culturally diverse assisted-living/long-term care facility for elderly people. The building is planned to house 150 people. There will be 75 assisted-living apartments and 50 rooms for residents in long-term care; of these rooms, 25 will be single-occupancy, and the other 25 will be double occupancy.

Action Plan Components

Your action plan you must:

1. Create a Spiritual Assessment Questionnaire that includes a minimum of 10 questions.

a. Discussion each question detailing why the question is important, and what information will be gleaned from the client’s answer.

b. Explain how the answer will apply to a spiritual intervention and/or therapy plan.

2. Identity Needs of Individuals: The action plan should identify how to integrate spiritual and religious practices, therapeutic activities, and health care to address the needs of the following:

a. Residents who share a double-occupancy room

b. Residents who are culturally diverse

c. Residents who lack a specific spiritual identity

d. Residents who are grieving for another resident who passed away

e. Privacy concerns for all residents

f. Employees, who are equally a part of the environment

Sydney’s Logistics

Sydney’s Logistics is a growing business that specializes in providing business services that many

small firms do not have the expertise, the space or the resources to handle on their own. These services

include warehouse receiving and storage, intermodal systems, and !SO-certified packaging,

among others. Sydney’s recently redesigned its computer system to reduce costs and achieve faster,

more accurate information about its operations. At this point, the new system is ready for implementation.

Civil Rights and Liberties are not always complementary protections for citizens. Sometimes they can conflict. In the very interesting case of the Boy Scouts of America v. Dale (2000), the Supreme Court had the task of balancing First Amendment protections for free association against the civil rights protections provided under the laws of the State of New Jersey against discrimination.

As you can gather from the case summary, as well as for the longer “syllabus” of the case, the issue was whether the Boy Scouts could legally discriminate against homosexuals. On the one hand, as a private organization, the Boy Scouts have the right to determine their criteria for membership. On the other hand, the State of New Jersey has the power to pass laws forbidding discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

How should these conflicting claims be balanced? Read the summary (and the syllabus, if you can), and tell what you would have decided, and why.
