Reflect: The U.S. Constitution is the cornerstone of our federal government. The Constitution establishes a basic operational framework that enables the three branches of government – executive, legislative, and judicial – to interact and function as a unit. Embedded in this operational framework are two key principles: separation of powers and a system of checks and balances.

Write: In your initial post, explain why the separation of powers and the system of checks and balances are important for our democracy. Provide recent, real-world examples of the separation of powers and checks/balances in action (one example each). Also, discuss how the Constitution protects individual and group rights. Again, provide a recent real-world example of these Constitutional protections being applied here in the U.S. You must fully respond to all parts of the prompt and write your response in your own words.

Discussion 1:

Compare and contrast the president’s crime control policy with crime control policy of governors and mayors. Is there consistency between policies at different levels of government? Did the crime control policy change based on the political party of the president, the governor, or the mayor? Marion and Oliver (2012) state, “The president’s agenda is but one aspect of the total government agenda, but it carries significant weight in the realm of moving policies from the systemic to the institutional agenda” (p. 109). One of the key elements of the president’s agenda is the crime control policy. Explain how the president’s agenda influences crime control policy. As you examine the policy process, explain how the president used the constitutional and institutional powers of his office to focus attention on his crime control policy. Discussion 2:

Crime control policy goes back to the founding principles laid out in the Constitution and the debate over federal versus state rights. In preparation for this discussion, review the crime control policies and initiatives that your congressman, congresswoman, or senator supports (I live in Virginia). Visit the congressional websites of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives for a wealth of information. There are a wide range of opinions on several crime control issues stemming from terrorism attacks (e.g., personal freedoms, surveillance, militarizing the police, etc.), response to school shootings (e.g., gun control, etc.), and gang and drug trafficking (e.g., Byrne Justice Assistance Grant, etc.). Explain the key elements of your representative’s crime control policy. As you examine the Congressional policy process, how effective is your Senator or Representative’s policy on the overall state criminal justice system or one of the components? Are the state policies in alignment with the national policy? Data consolidation is when you whant to summarize a large amount of data into a worksheet. What-if is the process when you change the values to see how they affect the formulas that are in the worksheet. They do serve a purpose and this is to help data stay organized and to see what affects they can have on data. An example of data consolidation would be summarizing data in excel and for the what if it would be scenarios where you would want to see how much you would make in 20 years if you make the Same amount an hour and then change what you make an hour.

Consolidation in Excel is a great feature than can be used to summarize data or values from multiple worksheets that contain related data or values. With this feature, users can find it very easy to combine all related data for several users or items. Let say for instance we have a sheet that entails various customers who make purchases during the week and among them there are two customers who basically make 5 purchase on separate days during the week, for example. Repeating the same name and purchase made for a specific customer might be a burden or confusing to read at times. To erase that, the consolidating feature can be used to calculate the total purchase of that specific customer over the week instead of repeating the same name in the worksheet. With that users will find it pretty much easy to understand their sales over the week for various customers. On the other hand, the what-if analysis feature is basically the process in which variables can be modified or changed in order to notice or observe how it can affect calculated results or an outcome of particular something. Verily, most big companies and businesses use this feature to make assumptions about future trend and profit making in order to observe and compare how a particular change may affect a related outcome. Comparing the two features, I will personally say that they serve similitude characteristics but aren’t the same, neither do they perform the same function. Thus I will say each of them is used under different scenarios.
