Thomas Hobbes, the father of modern philosophy, is a firm proponent of a separation of church and state. He is also very direct in his work, The Leviathan, where he depicts man as selfish and argues that it is this selfishness that often leads to war. For peace to be established, man must agree to a social contract with a monarch.

John Locke’s most famous work, Two Treatises of Government, influenced many of America’s Founding Fathers, including Thomas Jefferson and his writing of the Declaration of Independence. Most notably, Locke argues that man is born with the right to life, liberty, and property – all of which are natural rights. He also contends that if government violates the social contract then the people have the right to abolish the government.

Jena-Jacques Rousseau believed man was inherently good, but society is not. It’s this society that causes man to form alliances to protect their interests against others. Once alliances are formed societies are then naturally formed, thus creating a social contract between the citizens of the new society (alliance).

Select one of these three philosophers (Rousseau, Locke, Hobbes) and write a 2 page paper in which you analyze the significant ways in which their ideas differ from those at work in modern democracies. What could we gain from following their ideas more closely, and what might be dangerous if we did so?

Karl Marx is considered the father of communism. His writings and economic policies have influenced leaders from V.I. Lenin and Ma Tse-tung, to more modern leaders like Fidel Castro and leaders of other emerging nations. The core ideas of Karl Marx and Communism remain prominent in modern China, North Korea, and other Communist countries. His most famous work is The Communist Manifesto, written in conjunction with Friedrich Engels. Marx and Engels called for the “workers of the world to unite” in arms against the ruling bourgeoisie class (the capitalists). Marx argues that capitalism will eventually destroy itself.

Adam Smith is widely known as the father of capitalism. His work, “A Wealth of Nations” described how an “invisible hand” would guide an economy to prosperity. Smith believed that when producers (capitalists) pursue their own self-interest it will indirectly promote the good of society as a whole. His capitalist society is one where the free market reigns with limited (if any) regulation. This is the laissez-faire approach.

Alexis de Tocqueville was a French politician and writer who visited America in the early 19th century. From his visits to America he ultimately produced his most famous writing, the two volume Democracy in America. In this, he explores the ideas of democracy and equality and how these themes shape American culture.

ASSIGNMENT:

Emerging nations are generally defined as those countries working to become industrialized (such countries include Cuba, Indonesia, Nigeria, India, etc…). Research and identify one emerging country and discuss why Marxism might be an attractive option for that country and its leaders. In addition, based on your readings and understanding of Tocqueville, how might he view that country if he were to visit it today.

Case Study #1: Disaster Safety Plan

Jane and Cathy are arriving at work on an unusually snowy day. The maintenance workers haven’t finished spreading the ice melt where Cathy and Jane have parked. Jane slips on the ice, but regains footing and doesn’t appear injured. Jane insists she’s injured, and asks Cathy to call an ambulance. When paramedics arrive, Jane begins screaming in pain, and the paramedics take her to the emergency room.

You are the Director of Workplace Safety for this organization, and Cathy schedules a meeting with you. She tells you what really happened in the parking lot that morning, and says that Jane was not hurt or injured in the incident.

As the Safety director, it is your job to make sure that there is a plan in place to address situations of this type. Using the text and additional sources create a disaster safety plan for the organization.

Case Study #2: Ergonomics Orientation Program

RC Accounting and Tax services has 350 employees. The company has many large clients and has been overwhelmed with the deadlines and demands of the customers. To compensate for this, the company pays overtime and, in the past, most of the employees were willing to work the extra hours for the pay.

In the last 12 months, Gina Johnson, the director of Human Resources, has noticed an increase in the number of work-related injuries to arms, wrists, and shoulders. This year alone there were 10 OSHA recordable ergonomic injuries at personal computer workstations with thousands of dollars in compensation costs. In a meeting with the company CEO, Nan Flannigan, Gina explains her growing concern. Gina and Nan call you in to discuss potential solutions to this problem. They are worried not only about the increased cost of injuries, but the health and well-being of the employees as well.

As the Director or Workplace Safety for this organization, you are tasked with developing an ergonomics orientation program.
