Think of an IT project that you would like to start as a project initiator or sponsor.

Conceptualize and define the overall goal of the IT  project, and how it adds tangible value to an organization. Remember that a charter is not yet ready to be created at this point.

You may use one of the following options to present the project that you picked:

A timeline detailing the sequence of events
A flowchart describing cause and consequences

Demonstrate your understanding of the complexities of how we learn by evaluating the potential correlations between symbolic interactionism and constructivism. Apply basic research methods in psychology to your post by synthesizing the principles from the articles in your own words with appropriate citations. Do not quote the articles directly. Based on your course resources, scholarly articles, and the knowledge you have developed throughout the past four weeks, critically consider how/if these correlations might affect a person’s ability and/or willingness to learn new material. Consider the following in your analysis:

Symbolic interactionism is actually a theory posed in sociological psychology. Do you believe this theory can be aligned with the framework of constructivism, which originates from learning psychology? Why, or why not? Support your statements with scholarly research and personal examples.
In your opinion, what prevents (or substantiates) their correlation?
Based on these theories, what possible needs should be considered when teaching skills to a group of diverse learners?

1. Ethics in Design :

Imagine that you work for a company that makes instrumentation amplifiers for medical equipment. The customer on a new project has asked for a change in the sensor circuitry that lowers the resistance between the sensor and the amplifier circuit. The nature of the sensor requires that it be operated at a high voltage, so the impact of lowering the resistance in the interface means a higher current flowing through the sensor.

As the lead engineer on the project, you object to this request, explaining that you believe the safety of the patient will be impacted by this requested design change. You boss disagrees and orders you to go ahead with the redesign.

What do you do? What professional, social, and ethical considerations come into play as you decide on a course of action? How do you imagine your decision may affect the relationships with other individuals on the design team?

Write a detailed response to this scenario.

2. Continuing Professional Development :

Once you have learned the basics of semiconductors and their applications, learning about new applications of semiconductors, such as how they are used in integrated circuits or in advanced power regulators, is much easier. Efforts in this area are supported today in several different ways, including:

A wide variety of electronics magazines that containing interesting and informative articles and projects
Electronics kits available through electronics catalogs and at stores such as Radio Shack
Youtube videos, blogs, and other similar resources.
Membership in professional organizations, such asthe IEEE, where specific societies and/or user groups exist in many different technical areas, including semiconductors.

Explain how you would use one or more of these resources to engage in self-directed continuing professional development. What are you reasons for doing so? Are they purely personal or job related? What benefit is there in continuing to develop skills and acquire knowledge ?

Based on the textbook’s summary of Timothy’s philosophy of continually striving for excellence, determine whether or not Scarlet Hospital was prepared to compete with the establishment in Salem even before the highway improvement mandated such an upgrade in delivery health care services.
Examine the potential lessons that the “Stopping Outshopping” case could teach health care executives about complacency.
Evaluate the potential value of Michael Porter’s Five Forces analysis and SWOT Analysis for effective decision making, in its ability to help Scarlet Hospital protect its market share and thus decrease the chance of losing patients to other institutions in Salem.
Appraise the value of the Balanced Scorecard model in its ability to help Scarlet Hospital executives reinforce its defensive marketing strategy.
Propose a one (1) page offensive marketing strategy (i.e. communication, branding, innovation, etc.) that Scarlet Hospital should deploy in order to turn the table on Salam-based health care providers and improve its competitive marketing position.

Karl Marx is considered the father of communism. His writings and economic policies have influenced leaders from V.I. Lenin and Ma Tse-tung, to more modern leaders like Fidel Castro and leaders of other emerging nations. The core ideas of Karl Marx and Communism remain prominent in modern China, North Korea, and other Communist countries. His most famous work is The Communist Manifesto, written in conjunction with Friedrich Engels. Marx and Engels called for the “workers of the world to unite” in arms against the ruling bourgeoisie class (the capitalists). Marx argues that capitalism will eventually destroy itself.

Adam Smith is widely known as the father of capitalism. His work, “A Wealth of Nations” described how an “invisible hand” would guide an economy to prosperity. Smith believed that when producers (capitalists) pursue their own self-interest it will indirectly promote the good of society as a whole. His capitalist society is one where the free market reigns with limited (if any) regulation. This is the laissez-faire approach.

Alexis de Tocqueville was a French politician and writer who visited America in the early 19th century. From his visits to America he ultimately produced his most famous writing, the two volume Democracy in America. In this, he explores the ideas of democracy and equality and how these themes shape American culture.

ASSIGNMENT:

Emerging nations are generally defined as those countries working to become industrialized (such countries include Cuba, Indonesia, Nigeria, India, etc…). Research and identify one emerging country and discuss why Marxism might be an attractive option for that country and its leaders. In addition, based on your readings and understanding of Tocqueville, how might he view that country if he were to visit it today.

Beginning any philosophy course with the classical Greeks can be a challenge for modern students because many of the references in their writings are not applicable today. What about the more modern philosophers though? Like those of the past, the modern philosophers have significant influence over modern political systems.

Sartre, a winner of the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, was a political activist and a member of the Peace Movement. In general, he was opposed to imperialism and believed that society was constantly in conflict as a result of the struggles between those with power (the have’s) and those without power (the have not’s). At the same time, he was an existentialist, holding individuals responsible for their own actions of good faith and toward freedom.

Hanna Arendt is the only political theorist (as she preferred to be identified as) we study this term, though there are others. Much of Arendt’s work addresses the nature of political power, specifically the subjects of politics, authority, and totalitarianism. Her perspective as a German-born Jew, as a person who helped Jewish refugees in France during WWII, and as one who was forced to flee France for America as a result of German occupation, provides her a solid perspective on a her focus areas – many of which are used to examine even more current issues.

Rawls is the most historically recent political philosopher we study in this course, having just passed away in 2002. As a political philosopher, much of his focus is on justice. His primary argument is that “most reasonable principles of justice are those everyone would accept and agree to from a fair position.” It is not uncommon for his philosophies to be applied to current issues, whether controversial or not. Arendt was presented the National Humanities Medal in 1999 by former President Bill Clinton who suggested Rawls had helped a generation of Americans restore their faith in democracy.

ASSIGNMENT

Identify and describe a current issue (this could be a controversy or just an issue of importance) in American Government. Explain in a 2 pages how one of the modern philosophers we’ve studied would respond to that issue.

Beck Manufacturing and Plant Capacity

Read the “Beck Manufacturing” case study in Chapter 8 of your text. In a three- to four-page paper, address the following:

Calculate the capacity of each machine center and the capacity of the system.
Analyze where the focus of the company’s efforts should be if Beck wants to expand capacity. Determine how much extra capacity he can get without causing another operation to become the bottleneck.
Suggest ways Beck can expand capacity without purchasing new equipment.
