Health care costs in the United States continue to increase. Despite the high cost of care for health care in the United States, quality indicators and outcomes lag behind other countries when compared to certain dimensions of performance.

For this assignment, analyze and discuss the relationship between quality and cost in health care in the United States, and research and identify how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) attempts to reduce costs and improve quality. Based on your research of the PPACA, provide an argument for whether the PPACA has been a success in reducing costs and improving quality.

The topic of your project needs to be a contemporary societal problem, such as healthcare reform, immigration reform, privacy rights, euthanasia, First Amendment Rights, stem cell research, capital punishment, corporate prisons, legalizing drugs, ageism, animal rights, cloning, prayer in schools, racial profiling, recycling/conservation, sexism, outsourcing jobs, workplace bullying, etc. The topic must focus on a single aspect, as in “How far do corporations intrude into the private lives of their employers?” or “The social costs of financing the distribution of custom-designed drugs.” You may suggest another topic to use, but the instructor must approve the topic during the Week Two Discussion.

The Final Research Project will present research relating the responsibilities of a critical thinker to contemporary society. In this assignment, you will do the following:

As a health care department manager, you have 10 employees under your supervision. The attendance policy at your facility requires employees to uphold good attendance. If an employee is late more than 5 times in 1 month, the department manager must begin corrective action. One employee has been late to work 10 times this month. How will you handle this employee? Obesity in America is considered an epidemic. There are many contributing factors to obesity (both childhood and adult), such as biological, environmental, social, or economic factors. Review the information on obesity on pages 383 to 385 in the textbook. You may also use the Internet or Strayer Library to research obesity and its causes.

The Research Question(s) and Phenomenon or Research Questions and Hypothesis section of the Prospectus specifies the Research Questions to be answered by the study. For a qualitative study, this section specifies the Research Questions as well as the Phenomenon to be studied. For a quantitative study, it defines the Research Questions, the Hypotheses, and the Variables for which data will be collected. The Research Questions should be derived from the Problem Statement, as well as, the model(s) or theory(s) selected to provide the theoretical foundations for the research. If the study is qualitative, state two or more research question(s) that guide the research for collecting the information needed to answer the problem statement and describe the phenomenon being studied. If the study is quantitative, state two or more research question(s) and associated hypotheses. HINT: Many researchers use their problem statement to develop a Primary Research Question they use to develop their other research questions. This is done by simply converting the Problem Statement into a question format. Below is an example for a qualitative and quantitative study. Assume the Problem Statement for a qualitative study is “It is not known how a high-minority, low-SES school in Atlanta outperforms all of the high SES schools in and around its district on state tests in literacy, mathematics and science.” The Primary Research Question becomes: “How does a high minority low SES school in Atlanta outperforms all of the high-minority, high-SES schools in and around its district on state tests in literacy, mathematics and science?” Assume the Problem Statement for a quantitative study is “It is not known if and to what degree there is a correlation between level of transformational leadership in principals and school climate.” The Primary Research Question is “Is there a correlation between level of transformational leadership in principals and school climate?”

Assignment Option 2: Fragile State Analysis

For your portfolio project, you will evaluate a fragile (formerly called failed) state and develop a plan to help it recover and get back on the right track. This will involve a survey of the country’s history, the source of its problems, information about its people, economy, and culture, and its potential to succeed if given a chance.

The Global Policy Forum website provides information on fragile/failed states in general, as well as specific states.

ForeignPolicy.com provides the 2014 list of most fragile/failed states. You may choose your country for this study from the countries in dark red on the map at the bottom of the opening page.

Although fragile/failed states lack an effective government, this does not mean that no one is trying to run the country or at least parts of the country. Who is trying to govern your chosen country? How are they attempting to do this?
Are there attempts to hold elections? If so, how are these elections conducted, and what is voter turnout (See 4 below for more information)? When was the most recent election held, and what were the results?
