Discuss and explain excel that enhancing worksheet Basra Kayi at Northwest Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Basra Kayi is an administrative assistant at Northwest Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. She has begun work on an Excel worksheet summarizing hospital admission statistics over the past 4 years, and she’d like your help enhancing the worksheet so it can be presented to the hospital’s key investors.

GETTING STARTED
• Download the following file from the SAM website:
o IL_Excel2013_UA_P1a_FirstLastName_1.xlsx
• Open the file you just downloaded and save it with the name:
o IL_Excel2013_UA_P1a_FirstLastName_2.xlsx
o Hint: If you do not see the .xlsx file extension in the Save file dialog box, do not type it. Excel will add the file extension for you automatically.

Describe and create two reports using the Adventure Works database.

Scenario and Summary

You have been requested to create two reports using the Adventure Works database.

Report 1:

A report has been requested that will show a full list of products in each subcategory and category. Provide the ability to use drill down on both the category and subcategory. Also provide a count of the number of products in each subcategory. The report will be graded based on the following:

  • Appropriate fields
  • Report layout
  • Grouping on correct fields
  • Group totals

Report 2:

Produce a report that shows the total sales for each territory. Allow the user to drill down through the territory to see the total sales amounts for individual categories. The report will be graded based on the following:

  • Appropriate fields
  • Report layout
  • Drill down
  • Interpretation

Upon completing this lab, you will be able to

  1. create report groups,
  2. use formulas and aggregate functions to produce report totals,
  3. use formulas and aggregate functions to generate group totals,
  4. incorporate drill down features, and
  5. specify paging information – placing page breaks, page numbers, and so forth.

Describe the Cooper Processing Company (C P C)

The Cooper Processing Company (CPC) is a manufacturer/processor of food products. Located in the city of Lansing, Michigan, the company services a national market with processed and packaged meat items such as hot dogs, bologna, sausage, etc. Because the company has been experiencing increased costs in marketing and logistical activities it has hired you as an expert to analyze costs and investments and make recommendations to management. In its most recent fiscal year, the company achieved sales of $100,000,000.
The company sells its products through two separate channels of distribution and each is treated as a profit center with full financial responsibility for income statement and balance sheet. The first channel is to retail grocery stores and supermarkets. The second channel is to foodservice wholesalers who, in turn, sell to restaurants and other foodservice establishments. According to the company accounting records, the retail segment accounts for 60 percent of sales, foodservice for 40 percent. The cost accountant believes that both channels are profitable. He says that the company achieves an overall average gross margin of 60 percent on its sales.
The cost accountant also provides you with the following total costs for various marketing and logistics functions at CPC:

Highlight and identifying an independent third party, such as a professional society, to organize educational programs.

In response to increasing criticism over its sponsorship of physician-education courses (and the suggestion of undue influence on doctors prescriptions and procedures), the drug maker Pfizer announced in July 2008 that it would no longer pay marketing communications companies to arrange continuing medical education (CME) courses, which doctors must take to maintain their licenses. Pfizer said it would support medical education only when it was put on by hospitals and professional medical associations. Zimmer Holdings, a medical device manufacturer that manufactures hip, knee, and elbow implants, suspended funding of all CME activity. The company said it will restrict the way it funds courses in the future by identifying an independent third party, such as a professional society, to organize educational programs.

“We understand that even the appearance of conflicts in CME is damaging, and we are determined to take actions that are in the best interests of patients and physicians,” Dr. Joseph M. Fetlock, Pfizer’s chief medical officer, said in a press release.

Industry support for CME has quadrupled since 1988, to $1.2 billion a year, according to the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), an organization in Chicago that approves CME providers. More than half of that is funneled to marketers, with the rest going to hospitals, medical associations, and other nonprofit entities.

As industry money for continuing education proliferates, so do worries that many of the courses have become at least partly aimed at promoting products. The industry and its outside marketers say they ensure that the courses remain free of commercial influence. But some medical experts argue that when employees of communications firms are beholden to pharmaceutical and device companies, they will produce CME courses that are slanted in favor of their sponsors, even if they don’t realize what they are doing. “There’s not only a perception of bias, there’s a reality,” says Dave Davis, a vice president of Association of America Medical Colleges.

In January 2010, Pfizer appeared to modify its 2008 position by announcing a $3 million grant to Stanford University to create continuing medical education courses that the company claims will come with “no conditions, and the company will not be involved in developing the curriculum.” However, critics have argued that the curriculum will most likely focus on at least two areas in which Pfizer has major product lines: smoking cessation and heart disease.

Case #1

#1) Where is the conflict of interest in this CME relationship?

#2) Do you think doctors are likely to be influenced by such promotional tactics? Why or why not?

#3) If the pharmaceutical company is paying for the event, shouldn’t it have the right to promote its products at the event? Why or why not?

#4) Pfizer stated in 2008 that it would only support medical education put on by hospitals and professional medical associations. How can it then justify the Stanford grant?

#5) Has Pfizer simply replaced one conflict of interest with another? Why or why not?

#6) Propose an alternative approach to ensure that CME is provided without a conflict of interest.
