You can choose any item from the edition of the day or week. It can come from the business section, sports, arts, science, etc. However, you cannot use an article more than a month old. You have to use a current item, because the point of this exercise is for you to see how sociological theory can help us to understand current, not past, events. As you select a news item, think about a theory that you can relate to it.

Once you have selected both the news story and the theory, it is time to write your paper. It should include a brief summary of the news story, a brief overview of the theory you are applying to explain it, including a definition and application of TWO concepts, and an explanation of the connection you see between the theory/concepts and the news story. This assignment will help you develop an understanding about the life cycle of supply chains including the models that are aligned with it and the cost it bears. In addition, you will develop an awareness of the elements of the supply chain that should be monitored to ensure the desired results are being obtained.

You have been asked to be a guest speaker in a high school business class. Your task is to explain the basic concepts of supply chain management to a group of students. The students will take a quiz on supply chain management based on the information in your presentation.

Issues and trends that affect healthcare delivery are varied and arise from many different sources, such as the emergence of new technologies, changing patient and workforce demographics, and economic fluctuations. Federal, state, and local policies are continually instituted or amended to address new developments or priorities and to rectify problems in healthcare delivery. For instance, changes may be required to address cost containment challenges or disparities in access to healthcare services.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Identify an issue currently in the news that is associated with federal, state, or local efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
• Research the issue in a variety of news sources, such as government sites (e.g., the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Mental Health) and online newspapers. Do not use blogs or other informal sources.

In this discussion, the focus is on examining agencies responsible for child protection. You will sharpen your technology skills by creating an infographic about a specific agency. Infographics are a way to visualize data and information using text and graphics and can be powerful instructional tools, as noted in the Teaching with infographics presentation and further explained in the Week Two Instructor Guidance. Prepare for this discussion by reading Rubin (2012) Chapter 1, the Principles and Philosophy resource, and the Week Two Instructor Guidance. Then, using the software of your choosing, be sure to attach or link to your infographic in your initial post. Your infographic will be included in the Week Six Final Project.

Initial Post: Create an infographic using the software of your choice that includes the following:

1. An engaging title for the infographic.
2. A summary of a specific child protection agency’s vision, mission, guiding principles, or philosophies.
3. A summary of how the agency’s philosophies, principles, and key policies support or align with the philosophical tenets promoted by the Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) 1997.
4. At least one image in the infographic.

The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate that you can use aesthetic principles in your own reasoning, and to look at an object in a new, perhaps more open-minded, way. Ideally you should learn something about what you value, and gain some insight into how others might perceive the world a bit differently.

You must submit your responses to the assignment below in an essay format.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. First, find an object THAT YOU HAVE PHYSICALLY ENCOUNTERED (do not use things from online) that you do not normally consider art, or even aesthetically valuable. You may have encountered this item in a normal daily setting, or in a museum, art store, or other venue.
2. Examine the object for a while, and then write out a brief description of the object (if necessary, take a picture of the object and include that with your assignment, pasting the picture into the submission text box.).
3. Second, indicate (in approximately one or two paragraphs) why you normally would not consider the object art or aesthetically valuable. You should include what your original definition of art is (what do you normally consider art, and why), and you should clearly explain why this object does not meet your preconceived notions about art.
4. Next, try to examine the object in a new way, using the principles of aesthetic reasoning (either functionalist or formalist, but not both). Give an argument, which integrates facts about the object and the aesthetic principles, for why someone could consider the object art or aesthetically valuable. The aesthetic principles you use must be true of the object. You must choose to use either functionalist principles or formalism, but NOT BOTH since functionalism and formalism are incompatible.  YOU CANNOT USE, OR EVEN MENTION, THE LAST PRINCIPLE ABOUT “NO ARGUMENT CAN BE GIVEN TO ESTABLISH AESTHETIC VALUE” (since the assignment REQUIRES YOU TO PROVIDE AN ARGUMENT, this last principle is not compatible with the assignment).

The more reasoning and depth to your analysis, the better.  You should submit an essay of 1000 to 2000 words in order to ensure you have developed your ideas adequately. Don’t forget to include your in-text citations and a Works cited section at the end of your essay.

Unfortunately, in universities across the country, academic dishonesty is rampant, especially among business schools.  The majority of university students today report that they have engaged in some form of academic dishonesty, such as cheating on exams, plagiarizing the works of others, and/or participating in other various unethical activities.  I am well aware of this issue and consider it to be our mutual responsibility to do all we can to eliminate academic dishonesty from our university, beginning with ourselves.  Unethical actions do not only affect the dishonest student; they are grossly unfair to those who put forth genuine effort and are concerned with upholding themselves to the highest ethical standards.

 

For this course, actions which constitute academic dishonesty include but are not limited to: 1) cheating in any way on an exam or assignment, 2) turning in work which is not entirely your own original work for this course, 3) falsifying data in any way, and 4 ) plagiarism of others’ ideas or your own, regardless of intent.  With regard to this last item, remember that improperly citing a source of information can be plagiarism.  For instance, using a parenthetical citation when a direct quotation should be made is plagiarism, whether you intend to plagiarize or not.

Correct parenthetical citation: Retailers would do well to not implement large price increases (Martin, Ponder, and Lueg, 2009).

Correct direct quotation: Firms like Ikea or Amazon might have no choice but to implement large price increases, but “retailers should avoid them” (Martin, Ponder, and Lueg, 2009, p. 592).

 

 

 

All information sources used in any project should be cited and referenced appropriately using APA (American Psychological Association) formatting.  Also, academic dishonesty (e.g. plagiarism) in any group activity will affect all of the members of that group.  For this reason, you are urged to be very careful in selecting whom you work with as well as ensure that all of the written work submitted by your team is written with all team members present and diligently comparing information sources to your written work.

1. There are three types of food spoilage namely:-Microbial spoilage; Physical spoilage; Chemical spoilage.
2. Preservation of food is necessary so as to increase the self-life of foods thus increasing the supply. So many perishable foods can be preserved for a long time:- Making the seasonal food available throughout the year; Adding variety to the diet; Saving time by reducing preparation time and energy, as the food has already been partially processed ; Stabilizing prices of food, as there is less scope of shortage of supply to demand; Decreasing wastage of food by preventing decay or spoilage of food; Improving the nutrition of the population. Preserved foods help people to bring a variety in the diet, thereby decreasing nutritional inadequacies.

 

3. Enzymes are important when preserving food because enzymes are not taken with food, the body will have to produce its own digestive enzymes. Thus the long term consumption of enzyme-deficient foods can exhaust the digestive organs and lead to various health problems, including chronic degenerative disease.
4. Canning refers to the process of applying heat to food that’s sealed in a jar in order to destroy any microorganisms that can cause food spoilage. Proper canning techniques stop this spoilage by heating the food for a specific period of time and killing these unwanted microorganisms. During the canning process, air is driven from the jar and a vacuum is formed as the jar cools and seals.

Freezing foods refers to the art of making, packaging, and freezing foods products at their topmost freshness. Food can be frozen most fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and meat, cake and bread, and clear casseroles and soup.
Drying refers to a traditional means of preservation the oldest method known for preserving food. When you dry food, you expose the food to a temperature that’s high enough to remove the moisture but low enough that it doesn’t cook. Good air circulation assists in evenly drying the food.

5. A) Salt inhibits the growth of spoilage-causing microorganisms by drawing water out of microbial cells through osmosis. As the unwanted bacterial population decreases, other beneficial bacteria, primarily of the Lactobacillus genus, come to the fore and generate an acidic environment (around 4.5 pH). The sugar included in the cure is used as food by the lactobacilli; generally dextrose is preferred over sucrose, or table sugar, because it seems to be more thoroughly consumed by the bacteria. This process is in fact a form of fermentation, and, in addition to reducing further the ability of the spoilage bacteria to grow, accounts for the tangy flavor of some cured products. Concentrations of salt up to 20% are required to kill most species of unwanted bacteria.
6. b) Today, however, it is preferred to use a hydrometer or to carefully mix measured ingredients from a reliable recipe. Once mixed and placed into a suitable container, the food is submerged in the salt brine. Brine curing usually produces an end product that is less salty compared to dry curing. Injection of brine into the meat can also speed the curing process.
7. In pickle preparation, its’ necessary to acidify the food to a pH of 4.6 or lower so it can safely be canned in a water bath. Food can be acidified in a number of ways, including a curing process (fermentation) or the addition of vinegar (quick pickling). Usually, when people refer to pickles, they mean a product made with the former method. Also known as quick-process or fresh-pack pickling, this is the method of covering the vegetables or fruits in seasonings, spices and hot vinegar. While quick pickling will preserve the food and allow you to can it for long-term storage, it does not offer the probiotic benefits of fermentation.

Fermentation of fruits or vegetables is cured in salt-and-water brine for one week or longer, altering its flavor, texture and color—no vinegar is added of vinegar is neither necessary nor required. As a substitute, the brine reacts with natural bacteria already present on the food to produce lactic acid, which helps preserve the product but is also a natural probiotic that aids in digestion.
