Distinguish “Why are ethical issues central to documentary filmmaking?”

The Ethics of Representing Others: The concept of representation is what compels us to ask the question, “Why are ethical issues central to documentary filmmaking?”  This question could also be phrased as, “What do we do with people when we make a documentary?”  How do we treat people we film; what do we owe them as well as our audience?  Should they receive compensation?  Should they have a right to block the inclusion of events that prove incriminating?  Is it all right to have repeat actions or conversations for the sake of the camera?  Does this compromise the integrity of their actions and the film’s claim to represent a reality that exists autonomously from its filming?”  (page 45)

Now, even though the above quote is referring to people and not animals, it still applies to Grizzly Man.  Ethical questions abound in the film, and since its release people have had pretty profound problems with how the filmmaker represented grizzly bears as being (somewhat) harmless creatures that have a moral center that makes room for people (the Grizzly Man) who have (what he thought were) pure intentions as to how to treat these animals.  He thought, literally, that the bears welcomed him as part of their pack; and he believed this in his soul (at least we are supposed to think he did).  But there are questions about that, questions that should have been asked even before the film got funded.

So I want you to write a paper (at least three pages in length, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, 1″ margins all around) that addresses all of the questions above.  What are the moral implications of making a documentary that features animals that have no idea what morality is, and what are the implications of making a film that does not care that the animals have no idea what morality is?  The film is obviously about the man, not the bears, even though the man would have us believe that all he cared about were the bears.  Were his intentions selfish?  Why or why not?  This is supposed to be a film about animal activism, but did he go about his activism in a moral way?  Did this film (as was its intent) make you care about the plight of bears more?  Did the filmmaker abuse the bears sense of their own life?  Did he exploit the very animals he was trying to protect?

These are the kinds of questions I want you to address.  Be as creative and as thorough as you can be, and quote the book, quote the film, so that your thesis will be as s

Discuss what are the implications of marketing to the general public rather than targeting specific segments of the market.

Southern Baptist Hospital (SBH) had long resisted the use of marketing, believing it was not an appropriate activity for a nonprofit organization. By the mid-1980s, however, the erosion of its market share due to growing competition forced SBH to adopt an aggressive marketing strategy.

Its primary initiative was a campaign of television advertisements aimed to reinforce for the general public the image of SBH as a high-quality institution. Because the organization was starting its marketing activities from scratch, ad production and airtime costs were expensive. The television commercials were professionally produced and received critical acclaim from the advertising community.

Following the public’s repeated exposure to these advertisements, a hospital executive requested information about the impact of the advertisements. The idea to study the campaign’s impact had not been considered earlier, and a belated evaluation effort was mounted to determine the extent to which the campaign had achieved the desired effect. Much to the consternation of SBH administrators, the evaluation found that the ads had had virtually no impact on the public’s already high perception of the institution, and no improvement in patient volumes, revenues, or market share could be attributed to the campaign. SBH administrators, committed to an expensive initiative, rationalized that the campaign had not aired long enough to generate the desired effect and invested even more money in the initiative.

After reviewing the above case, address the following points:

  1. To what extent did SBH research the needs of its audience prior to developing a marketing strategy?
  2. Does it appear that SBH has an overall marketing plan?
  3. Does it appear that SBH had a significant grasp of the nature of marketing?
  4. What are the implications of focusing marketing efforts on corporate image rather than the services the organization provides?
  5. What are the implications of marketing to the general public rather than targeting specific segments of the market?
  6. How much thought was given to measuring the effectiveness of the campaign going into the initiative?

Post your responses in a 2- to 3-page Microsoft Word document.

Evaluate the quality of the Brazilian Federal Data Processing Service’s proposed architecture plan geared toward solving the security problem.

Case Study 1: The Brazilian Federal Data Processing Service

Due Week 2 and worth 130 points

Read the case study titled, “Brazil to fortify government email system following NSA snooping revelations,” located here and at http://www.networkworld.com/news/2013/101413-brazil-to-fortify-government-email-274802.html.

Use the Internet to research the architectures that other government organizations and intelligence agencies use for email privacy, if any.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

  1. Examine the proposed business ethical problem that the Brazilian Federal Data Processing Service is presently experiencing. Determine whether you agree or disagree that Brazil’s problem is an ethical one that should be corrected. Provide a rationale for your response.
  2. Assess the levels of security deficiencies inherent in the Brazilian Federal Data Processing Service original enterprise architecture. Conclude whether or not Brazil could have previously considered its current problem and built an original architecture that would have prevented the problem in question. Provide a rationale for your response.
  3. Evaluate the quality of the Brazilian Federal Data Processing Service’s proposed architecture plan geared toward solving the security problem. Suggest two (2) other possible architecture solutions that the Brazilian Federal Data Processing Service should consider. Justify your response.
  4. Determine whether or not one (1) of the governments or intelligence agencies that you researched has taken precautions to avoid a security breach similar to the one that the Brazilian Federal Data Processing Service had experienced. If this government organization or intelligence agency has taken precautions to avoid a similar security breach, provide one (1) example of such a precaution. If this government organization or intelligence agency has not taken precautions to avoid a similar security breach, recommend one (1) action that it can take in order to avoid a similar security breach.
  5. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

Compare and contrast the entry models into Australia, Canada and the United States.

You are required to study Case Study 6: ‘Michael Hill International: Controlled expansion and sustainable growth’ (p.450) in your textbook and answer the five questions (see below) at the end of the case study (p.460). 2800 words.
1. What elements of global strategic management are apparent in Michael Hill’s initial expansion into Australia?
2. Critically analyse Michael Hill’s diversification into shoes.
3. Compare and contrast the entry models into Australia, Canada and the United States.
4. What factors do you believe Michael Hill included into the feasibility analysis to move overseas?
5. The case highlights the fact that the North American market is fragmented. What are the characteristics of fragmented industries such as these? How should companies like Michael Hill compete in a fragmented industry?
The case study primarily focuses on Chapters 6, 8, and 11 of the textbook. However, you are strongly advised to study other materials such as selected readings in modules plus any additional sources for the case study. You should prepare this assignment in ‘Essay’ format. In preparing this assignment, you should refer to Chapter 5: ‘Essay writing’ in Summers and Smith 2010, Communication skills handbook, 3rd edn, John Wiley and Sons. The use of subtitles is encouraged in the development of your essay however, these should be used sparingly. You may use a brief version of the questions as subtitles for your assignment. Keep subtitles short, simple and relevant to the content which they represent. It is important for essays to have standard subtitles for ‘Introduction’ and ‘Conclusion’.

JOURNAL

Please note that this journal assignment is based on a pretend scenario and fictitious money. However, the assignment is based on actual stock pricing in real time situations. Do not invest your personal money for this assignment.

The capital markets and the ability to raise funds for corporate uses are essential to the US economic systems.  For this assignment, imagine that you have $25,000 to invest in US companies. You are buying used stock. The company got the money when it issued the stock originally. You will be buying it from an existing owner.

You are investing, or buying the stock, because you believe the company will make money and pay you a dividend in cash. Each share of stock that you buy entitles you to any dividend declared and a vote at the annual stockholders’ meeting.

The stock also allows you the ability to earn your money back by selling the stock. Of course, investing in stocks is risky and there is the possibility that the stock you buy will be worth less when you want your money back. The company is not obligated to give you any of your money back. You will only get your money back if another investor wants to buy your stock.

For your first journal entry complete the following:

  1. Indicate the companies you are investing in: Select three (3) US companies that are publicly traded. There are many ways to find such companies and the stock prices, including the New York Stock Exchange at http://www.nyse.com, NASDAQ at http://www.nasdaq.com, and http://finance.yahoo.com.
  2. Indicate the amount you are investing in each company: Decide how you will divide the $25,000 across the three (3) companies; e.g. $10,000 in Company 1, $10,000 in Company 2, and $5,000 in Company 3. You decide the amount you are investing in each company. You do not have to provide any analysis to justify your decisions. You must only provide some reason for picking that company. For example, you might invest in WalMart because that company gets a lot of your money and you hear that WalMart is doing well, and will continue to do well.
  3. Indicate the number of shares you are buying, and the price of the shares you are buying for each company: Once you decide the companies and the amount for each company, determine how many shares you can buy. If Company 1 is selling for $42.16, then you may buy $10,000/ $42.16, or 237.19 shares. But you cannot buy a part of a share, so you decide to buy either 237 or 238. In this example you buy 237 shares, at $42.16 per share, investing $9,991.92. You won’t be able to buy exactly $10,000, or $5,000, or $25,000, but it will be relatively close.

When you look up a stock price, the price listed is the price as of that exact moment. There is an opening price, highs and lows during the day, and a closing price. Use the “opening price for the day” when you make your pretend investment. Using the example above, you are investing $9,991.92, 237 shares, and $42.16 per share.
