Checklist for Essay on Herodotus and Sima Qian
___ Three page essay (double spaced) using the small book Herodotus and Sima Qian.
___ Develop one main point or theme based on the information and insights you gained from the book.

Here are three examples of themes that could work for this essay:

“Herodotus and Sima Qian both use historical examples to teach lessons.”
“The stories from Herodotus and Sima Qian reflect the different values in their cultures.”
“The two historians have different views of what makes a great leader.”

___ Relate your main point to developments in Greece and China in the classical era. You may also consider how your main point relates to the life experiences of the two historians.
___ In your first paragraph, introduce the topic you are covering and state your main point. Give the reader a basic overview of how you will develop your essay.
___ Develop your main point with specific information, insights and quotes from the documents (Part Two). I recommend you use material from at least three documents by Herodotus and at least three by Sima Qian. You may also use the introduction or information from our textbook.
___ Instead of footnotes, simply mention where you got your material and give a page number.

Example:
In his account of the reign of Empress Lu (Document 10), Sima Qian says Lu gained power through treachery and murder. However, he also notes the people did well during her reign: “The world was at peace, punishments and penalties were rarely imposed, and criminals became few.” (111)

Linear Multiple Regression

This week, you have expanded on your knowledge of multiple regression to work with linear multiple regression. In this Application, you will perform a linear multiple regression analysis.

To prepare for this Application:

• Review Chapter 8 of the Field text for a description of the linear multiple regression and an example of conducting a linear multiple regression using PASW.
• Review Chapter 5 from the APA manual, “Displaying Results.”
• Review the media resources demonstrating the linear multiple regression.

The assignment:

Complete Smart Alex’s Task #5 on p. 355 to complete the linear multiple regression analysis using the Child Aggression.sav dataset from the Field text. However, use only the variables Aggression (DV), and test to see if Sibling Aggression is a mediator of the relationship between Parenting Style and Aggression or whether Sibling Aggression is a moderator of the relationship.

You can follow the steps outlined on pp. 331–354 as a guide. Report your findings in APA format according to the guidelines in the PASW Application Assignment Guidelines handout. The final document should be 2–3 pages long.

Comparative Essay: Eastern vs. Western Landscapes The Eastern landscape tradition is markedly different from that of the West. Eastern artists intended to evoke meditative contemplation through visual imagery using atmospheric perspective, placement, and asymmetry. Eastern works also stress a reverence for nature and often include calligraphy or even poems as part of the primary subject. What ideas do Western landscapes convey? For this assignment, we will choose one example each of paintings that represent the Eastern and Western landscape tradition. In our essay, we will compare and contrast each work’s individual similarities and differences and identify major contrasts in these two cultural approaches. For basic information on how to approach this comparative essay, visit the Module 5 Writing Skills page. Step 1: Research First, conduct basic research on Eastern and Western landscape paintings and create a list that includes least three major ways in which they differ. Then, using the ART 110 Research Guide sources or comparable sites, browse examples of both Eastern and Western landscape art and choose two examples that will allow you to write a fully-developed essay based on your three or more major points of comparison. Next, summarize the primary differences you will write about in one “thesis statement” that will appear as a sentence in your essay’s introduction. Note that not all Eastern and Western landscapes will make strong enough statements to support your thesis statement. For example, if Eastern landscapes stress a reverence for nature, look for Western examples that either clearly do or do not represent the same idea. Your choices should provide you with at least three clear, strong points of comparison. Step 2: Writing Essay (800 – 1200 Words) A. First, review the information regarding “comparative essays” in the Module 5 Writing and decide which strategy you will follow to write your essay. Insert an image file of each of the landscape examples—one by an Eastern artist and one by a Western artist—you have chosen to write about at the beginning of your document file. In your introduction, identify the artists who created the landscapes, the subject of the works, the era in which they were painted, the medium the artist used, and the size of the work. For the next part of your introduction, provide a brief description of how each work represents the ideals of the Eastern and Western landscape traditions or philosophies. As before, this is a “thesis-driven” essay. Include your thesis statement in the introduction and explain the three or more points of comparison you will be using in your analysis of the different attitudes towards nature, landscape, or the environment that you find in these two works. B. Using one of the strategies explained in the Module 5 Writing Skills material (Compare and Contrast Strategies), explain how the two works contrast according to your three points of comparison. Use terminology from the elements of art and principles of design as you examine each work. Focus of the Final Paper

This assignment focuses on how the management practices of planning, leading, organizing, staffing, and controlling are implemented in your workplace. If you are not currently working, you may use a previous employer. In this assignment, you must:

• Analyze the application of these management concepts to your place of work; the paper will not simply be a report on the five functions in general.
• Identify specific examples and explain of how each applies to the functions practiced in your place of work.
