The project is intended to give you the opportunity to develop your critical thinking ability by applying, integrating and extending the knowledge you have gained in class. It will also work on your communication skills.

Assignment
You have just joined the accounting group at Johnson & Johnson (J&J). You have been asked to get up to speed on their long-lived assets and implications of their associated accounting choices. Your assignment is to write a business memo to the Controller summarizing the results of your investigation. Your write-up should be 1 page plus a table or appendix with any supporting numbers/analysis. You will need to do/consider the following:
Obtain a copy of Johnson & Johnson’s latest annual fiscal statements (FY2014).
Review the financial statements and associated footnotes focusing on disclosures related to property, plant and equipment, intangible assets and goodwill.
How does J&J depreciate its property and equipment and amortize its intangibles (what policies do they follow)? What was the amount of depreciation expense in 2014 and 2013? What was the amount of amortization expense in 2014 and 2013? Does the increase or decrease for each make sense? Why or why not?
The cash flow statement reports that cash paid for additions to property, plant and equipment totaled $3,714,000,000 in 2014. Assume $2,228.4 million of this balance was for machinery and equipment. Further assume that the machinery and equipment have an expected useful life of five years with a salvage value of $378.6 million. Prepare a table comparing the depreciation expense and net book value of the machinery and equipment purchased in 2014 over its expected useful life assuming the company uses the straight-line depreciation method and the double-declining balance method. In both cases, assume the company recorded a full year of depreciation in 2014.
Using the formulas in the textbook (pages 627-628) calculate asset turnover and rate of return on assets (ROA) for J&J in 2014. How does this compare to Merck’s 2014 asset turnover of 42.95% and ROA of 12.14%? Would a change in depreciation policy to double declining balance for machinery & equipment (as calculated above) have a noticeable impact on these ratios?

Calculate the percentage of days in each month that fall into that range.

Objectives
1. To reinforce the use of loops.
2. To learn how to read information from files.

Introduction: Who doesn’t love dragons?
Movies about dragons and dragon training were very popular this summer. Your friend has not stopped talking about how awesome dragons are and how cool it would be to train them. To amuse your friend, you have decided to create a series of programs about dragons.

Problem: Celebration of the First Flight (flight.c)
In previous programs, we helped your dragon learn how to fly and train to improve their flight distance. It’s time for your dragon’s Celebration of the First Flight, similar to a dragon sweet 16. Every day for a month, your dragon is responsible for scheduling demonstration flights with the other members of Dragon Island. Your dragon wants to be presented in the best possible light, so it is up to you to determine the best month for the Celebration.

In this program, you will examine a file of weather data. Ask the user for the name of this file. Then, ask the user for the temperature range that their dragon flies best in. Calculate the percentage of days in each month that fall into that range. A file of weather data may contain multiple years, so calculate the percentage by dividing the number of days in range by the number of days that there is data for.

The month with the highest percentage is the month that the dragon should pick for their Celebration of the First Flight.

Arrays are not required (except for the name of the input file), but may simplify your solution.

Input Specification
The lower bound temperature will be an integer between 0 and 80
The upper bound temperature will be an integer higher than the lower bound and less than 120
The file name will be a string less than 30 characters in length

Input File Specification
The available weather data is presented in four columns per day:
MONTH DAY YEAR TEMPERATURE

The file will end with a -1 on a row by itself.

Output Specification
Output to the screen. Show the user the percentage of days in range for each month. Then, print the best month for the Celebration of the First Flight.

Month X: YY.Y percent of days in range.
I recommend month Z for the Celebration of the First Flight!

Output Sample
Below is a sample output of running the program. Note that this sample is NOT a comprehensive test. You should test your program with different data than is shown here based on the specifications given above. In the sample run below, for clarity and ease of reading, the user input is given in italics while the program output is in bold. (Note: When you actually run your program no bold or italics should appear at all. These are simply used in this description for clarity’s sake.)

The corresponding sample input file is available on the webcourse. You can find more input files at http://academic.udayton.edu/kissock/http/Weather/default.htm, but you will need to add a -1 to the end of the file.

Tell me about your dragon’s preferred temperature for flying:
What is the coldest temperature they can fly in?
60
What is the hottest temperature they can fly in?
80
Please enter the name of the weather data file for Dragon Island.

I recommend month 10 for the Celebration of the First Flight!

Deliverables
One source files – flight.c – is to be submitted over WebCourses.

Restrictions
Although you may use other compilers, your program must compile and run using Code::Blocks. Your program should include a header comment with the following information: your name, course number, section number, assignment title, and date. Also, make sure you include comments throughout your code describing the major steps in solving the problem.

Grading Details
Your programs will be graded upon the following criteria:

1) Your correctness

2) Your programming style and use of white space. Even if you have a plan and your program works perfectly, if your programming style is poor or your use of white space is poor, you could get 10% or 15% deducted from your grade.

3) Compatibility – You must submit C source files that can be compiled and executed in a standard C Development Environment. If your program does not compile, you will get a sizable deduction from your grade.

Identify key ideas or assignments that could be shared or saved in a portfolio or personal folder demonstrating your advancing skill level and areas of expertise.

In Module 1, the first required assignment asked you to examine the course and relate it to a current, real-world event or recent news story. Based on what you have learned in this course since Module 1, reflect on how your answers would change now that you have gained new knowledge. Return to your initial assignment and directly connect the content of your responses to the theories and material of this course. Additionally, based on what you learned in this course, provide some strategies that would address the issues described in the real-world event or recent news story you chose. For example, if you chose a recent story about how high school attendance rates have diminished in the past decade, provide several strategies for addressing that issue based on what you directly learned in this course. Submit a final assignment of 1000 words that synthesizes all these points.
This was my topic in module 1
After reviewing the course syllabus and reviewing the topics covered in this course, one real world event that occurred within the last 12 months that i feel relates and ties into the topics of this course deals with the interrogation and confession of an alleged murder suspect named Pedro Hernandez. Mr. Hernandez was just recently tried in court for the kidnapping and murder of 6 year old Etan Patz in New York City on May 25th 1979. The trial ended in a hung jury as there were several issues related to the confession. One of the issues was that when the police obtained the confession for the murder, Mr. Hernandez was never read his Miranda warnings until approximately two hours after the confession was obtained. His lawyer argued that his client who was a diagnosed schizophrenic, with an IQ level of 70 was not and could not been aware of his legal right to remain silent.
After reviewing the topics related to this course, the topic of The Admissible confession: The protection against false confession relates to this topic. One of the issues related to the case was that there was no evidence linking Mr. Hernandez to the disappearance and murder of the child as the body was never recovered. It is noted in the readings that the confession must be corroborated by physical evidence which in this case there was none.

General Paper Requirements:

• Paper will need to include an APA cover page. • Paper will need to include a 100 to 150 word abstract. • Paper will need to be a minimum of 4 pages not including the cover page, abstract, and reference page (It is normal to have approximately 250 words per page). • Paper will need to be supported with a minimum of three academic resources “1” source can include the textbook. Paper will need to follow all general formatting to meet APA standards of professional writing and research documentation including a complete reference page.

Note

If new lessons are going to be remembered and bring long-term value, effort must be taken to reflect on the experiences one has had, evaluate them in terms of whether they were positive or not, consider what one might do to alter future activities and behaviors as a result, and do concrete things to bring about real change. Reflection and feedback are two powerful tools to accomplish this and one’s portfolio is a concrete mechanism one can use to leverage past experiences moving forward.

Goals After completing a course, the goals for last week’s tasks are to:

• Reflect on the course and assignments submitted by distinguishing which topics have the greatest application for you as you advance in your program and career goals. • Identify key ideas or assignments that could be shared or saved in a portfolio or personal folder demonstrating your advancing skill level and areas of expertise. • Provide feedback to Aspen University about the course and its instructor for improvement purposes. Overview In this module, students will have opportunity to reflect on learning and skills gain from this class in the areas of networks and telecommunications. This is important because if new lessons are going to be remembered and bring long-term value, effort must be taken to reflect on the experiences one has had, evaluate them in terms of whether they were positive or not, consider what one might do to alter future activities and behaviors as a result, and do concrete things to bring about real change. Reflection and feedback are two powerful tools to accomplish this and one’s portfolio is a concrete mechanism one can use to leverage past experiences moving forward.

Discuss what happens if the auditor discovers that the financial statements are in fact misleading after the opinion and audited financials have been released.

2 accounting questions needed by tomorrow morning. Questions are not related and should be answered separately with the correlating question number on top. References are required.

Q1

Cost accounting controls relate to the physical inventory and the related costs of a product from raw material to finished good and storage of that finished good. These are basically in two categories: first is the control on physical inventory and the process to a finished good. This will focus on the product itself from raw material, workflow and the stages of completion, and then the finished product. Secondly, is the cost associated with the process and the controls that exist controlling and monitoring those costs.

The auditors test of cost accounting will include reviewing the physical controls of the materials used to produce the goods: records for transferring inventory from location to location: review of the perpetual inventory master files which allow for a much more accurate testing of inventory prior to the financial statement date: and unit cost data which would include proper costing of materials, labor and any manufacturing overhead. Any thoughts?

Q2

An item of interest during the audit completion process, actually, this would be after the statements have been issued. What happens if the auditor discovers that the financial statements are in fact misleading after the opinion and audited financials have been released? The first courses of action for the auditor would be to have the client restate the financial statements to disclose the discover facts. The reissuance of the financial statements is only appropriate if the subsequent facts were from events that existed prior to the date of the audit report. Of course, there is the concept of materiality that must be considered, and what was known, or not known, by the client or the auditor.

Now, what does the auditor need to do if the client refuses to restate the statements, how does the auditor proceed? The auditor should first inform the board of directors, they may need to notify the appropriate regulatory agencies, and where plausible to notify the investing public. The latter can be accomplished with the assistance of the SEC or the exchange on which the company is traded. Any thoughts?

Identify the information needed to develop a template that will be used to complete the individual employee’s learning plan.

Assignment 2: Required Assignment 2—Career Development Plan

In this assignment, you will recommend the components of a career development planning program and explain how the plan will integrate the organization’s mission and value statements.

Consider the following scenario:

You work in the HR Department of an electric power company in the southwestern region of the U.S. The company was founded in 1940 and has an excellent reputation as a provider of electricity. It is also considered to be an outstanding corporate citizen and known to be an excellent place to work. It has been ranked among the top three employers in the community for several years.

Its mission is to serve customer’s needs for electric power in ways that provide exceptional value to all stakeholders including customers, shareholders, employees, and the communities in which it operates.

Its values include providing a safe work environment; fairness and respect for customers, employees, shareholders, and partners; honoring commitments to use resources wisely; providing a high quality of work life for its employees; and striving for excellence and having fun.

Given its long history, many of its current employees are children or grandchildren of former employees so there are close family ties to the company as well as a sense of loyalty.

However, technological advancements in the power generation business over the years have resulted in jobs being either redesigned or eliminated. For example, in the past, the company had many employees who read meters, which showed the amount of electricity used by households. Meter readers traveled from house to house each month to log the information for billing purposes. Now meters are read automatically and data is transferred to the billing department via computer. This technological advancement eliminated the need for many employees who were required to resign, be laid off, or be retrained for other positions in the company.

The company faces a challenge as it strives to maintain its reputation as an excellent employer in the community, and, yet leverage advances in technology, which help it increase efficiency and remain competitive.

As a member of the HR team, you have been tasked with the responsibility of drafting a plan for a career development program for the company which will help managers effectively guide their staff in developing individual career development plans that are integrated with and support the company’s mission and values. Your report will be reviewed by senior HR managers as well as executive directors.

The HR department will have conducted a needs assessment as part of its strategic planning process to determine how the company will achieve its goals and objectives over the next 5–10 years. This assessment identifies areas where employees with new skill-sets will be required as well as areas where current employees with skill-sets may need to be either maintained or reduced (laid off).

As part of their annual performance appraisal, all employees will draft a personal and professional development plan on their own which will then be discussed with their manager. This plan should cover a five-year period and be reviewed and adjusted annually. It should include both formal training programs and individual initiatives to support personal and professional development interests.

By combining information about the company’s needs from the needs assessment and employees’ interests from the personal and professional development plans, it will be possible to develop a career planning program for the company that identifies the overlap between the company’s needs and employees’ interests and also detects gaps which could become opportunities for growth in the future. Overlapping areas indicate where the company needs skill-sets and the employees want to develop them while gaps indicate where the company needs skill-sets and there are no current employee interests in that area.

This process should help the company achieve a greater return on investment (ROI) from its training budget thus improving the bottom line. It should also result in lower employee turnover since employees will see that their personal and professional growth and the company’s needs are in alignment so they will be able to stay with the company and meet their personal and professional development goals.

Instructions:

  1. Develop a six-to-eight-page document in Word format detailing how you would approach and organize a program to address needs for development of the company as well as individual employees. Be sure to clearly explain how you would create the plan, but do not create the plan itself. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A2.doc.

Address the following in the plan:

  1. Identify the information needed to develop a template that will be used to complete the individual employee’s learning plan.
  2. Identify the information needed in order to develop the company’s needs assessment.
  3. Explain how you would coordinate both the individual employee’s plan and the company’s needs assessment into a comprehensive development plan. Be sure to identify overlaps or gaps.
  4. Explain how you would use this information to create a roadmap for development of a career development program for the company.
  5. Identify other factors that should be considered in this program’s development.
  6. Explain how the proposed plan would help managers effectively guide their staff in developing individual career development plans that are integrated with and support the company’s mission and values.
  1. Next, create a PowerPoint presentation for the senior management explaining how this proposed plan would contribute to the resolution of HR issues facing this company. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A2.ppt.

Utilize at least three scholarly sources in your research. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Make sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
