“Torture can be a Means of Saving Lives” by Miro Barbaric. Briefly explain

I have to write a paper about Torture and argue about why I think it is not always wrong. I believe that sometimes it is necessary to inflict torture on others to get information that may save someone’s life. I have to use two quotes from articles that we read. The first one is called “Torture can be a Means of Saving Lives” by Mirko Bagaric. The quotes I liked are “Given the choice between inflicting a relatively small level of harm on a wrongdoer and saving an innocent person, it is verging on moral indecency to prefer the interest of the wrongdoer.” and “Lost lives hurt a lot more than bent principles.” The next article is “Torture is Moral When Inflicted for a Greater Good” by Patrick J. Buchanan. I like the quote The morality of any act depends not only on its character, but on th circumstances and motive.” I also need to cite one source from a scholarly cite and one from a news article. Good Thesis Please.

Explain the relationship among ideas and among the various parts of the essay so that every part contributes to a unified whole (well-organized, focused, and unified paragraphs).

Unit Three: Researched Essay (6-8 pages) The researched essay will provide you with the opportunity to articulate a perspective on an issue of local, national, or global importance. Your essay will be developed through a process of evaluating resources, differentiating between multiple perspectives, and synthesizing your research. Evidence for your perspective should be supported by secondary sources that address the multiple perspectives represented by UW Oshkosh’s essential learning outcomes: sustainability, civic knowledge, and intercultural knowledge. These include investigating (Definitions of sustainability, civic knowledge, and intercultural knowledge will be uploaded to “Additional files”) Economy Society, including populations and social institutions Environment Culture, including arts, music, and humanities Technology Information and communication Government and laws There should be a minimum of five sources cited in the paper (paraphrase or direct quote). Please expect to do at least three revisions before submitting the paper (only the first revision needs to be submitted to the dropbox). Rough draft #1of research paper (submit to the dropbox and be prepared to work on it in class) Rough draft #2 due (submit to the dropbox and be prepared to work on it in class) Criteria for Success Successful papers will 1. Provide a clearly stated thesis that presents the answer to your focusing question. That means your thesis is NOT in the form of a question. This thesis should also serve as a blueprint for your paper. (You do NOT have to state the focusing question in your paper. In fact, it is better if you do not.) The thesis must be the last sentence of your introduction paragraph. Consider using words like “although” and “because” to add detail to your thesis, and be sure your position is clearly stated within the thesis. 2. Provide a solid argument, with strong research, based on a problematic and contestable thesis. Your paper topic perspective should include two of the three Signature Questions, but you do NOT have to specifically mention the Signature Questions in your paper. As you write the paper, the topic will naturally touch on the aspects of the Signature Questions. 3. Be sure your research is based on quality, reliable outside sources. There must be a minimum of five sources cited in the paper (direct quote or paraphrase). You may use the internet to find scholarly journal/newspaper articles through the library’s homepage or to search an organization/company’s website. Do not forget to look for books, and you may consider other sources like interviews, blogs, etc. Otherwise be aware that information found through Google, Wikepedia, etc. may be fine to obtain initial information, but it is not acceptable to cite as a source for this assignment. 4. Provide clear points with concrete examples to support those ideas (Point, Information, Explanation) and consider the parts of a classical argument with the claim, reasons, grounds, and warrants. Also consider addressing counterarguments in the paper. 5. Provide solid, clear textual evidence (quotations from expert and reliable sources) to support your thesis. Again, there should be at least five sources cited in the paper (direct quotation or paraphrase). Do not state “I believe,” “I think,” etc. Also, remain in third person (fourth and fifth rows in the pronoun antecedent worksheet) when writing the paper unless you are explaining a personal event. Then you can only use first person singular pronouns (first row of pronouns in Pronoun Antecedents worksheet. 6. Use PIE to introduce a quotation and explain the necessity or importance of that quotation. Do not actually state “this quote shows . . .” Remember that PIE can be done in one paragraph or several paragraphs; there may be several quotes or specific examples (inserts) for one point. Or there may be several insert/interpret to support one idea. The main point is that you go in-depth to support and explain your ideas! Please refer to PIE Paragraphs.pdf for help with this! 7. Smoothly incorporate outside materials (paraphrases, quotes, statistics, etc.) into the paper’s sentence structure. Remember, a quote cannot stand alone; you must incorporate it into your sentence structure. Dropped Quotes.html 8. When introducing an outside source, provide the person’s full name. It is also helpful to explain that person’s position or importance to add to his/her credibility. For example, “According to Dr. John Smith, a physics professor at Harvard University . . .” After providing the person’s full name, you may refer to him/her by last name only (never refer to a person by first name only—that is too informal in an academic paper). 9. Clearly explain the relationship among ideas and among the various parts of the essay so that every part contributes to a unified whole (well-organized, focused, and unified paragraphs). This means use transitions and strong topic sentences! Remember that a transition can be a word, a sentence, or even an entire paragraph that helps the reader understand the move from one point to the next. 10. Use an effective introduction that will provide either an opening lead, an explanation of the problem to be investigated, the background information, or an overview of the paper’s content. The introduction paragraph must include the thesis, which must be the last sentence of the paragraph. 11. Use an effective conclusion that provides either a summary of your essay, a short passage showing the relationship of your topic to some broader issues, a brief call to action, or a final concluding scene. 12. Use clear sentence structure throughout the paper. This includes using full sentences (no sentence fragments), proper grammar, and spell check. Do not use contractions. Stay in third person (unless giving personal experience). 13. Use an effective title that will forecast the content of your paper. 14. Properly use MLA or APA documentation throughout the paper. 15. Use in-text citations within the paper, and make sure every paraphrase and quote is properly documented. Each source listed within the paper must be included on the Works Cited page. The Works Cited page must be accurate, listing all outside materials referred to in the paper—and only the sources listed in the paper. The sources must appear in alphabetical order by the author’s last name (or the first major word of the title, if there is no author). Again, you may NOT use Wikepedia or other generic internet websites as a source. How many sources? Minimum of five cited sources! 🙂 Here are the peer review (draft one), revision (draft two), and editing (draft three) guidelines:

Discuss what is the difference between forecasting for existing product lines and for new products.

EACH MODULE SHOULD BE A SEPERATE FILE MODULE 3 [PAPER&EXCEL] Virtual World EBBD EMAIL – for Internal Use Only To: You From: Danny Wilco <dwilco@ebbd.com> Subject: Re: Forecasting at EBBD The Management Team is all for your efforts to investigate EBBD’s forecasting situation. We want you to thoroughly analyze what we are doing, what other forecasting methods and techniques are available, and make a recommendation on how we should proceed. We are particularly interested in how to improve our short term forecasting on an annual, quarterly, and monthly basis. We also would like to know how we could do longer term forecasting, say over two or three years. And we want to know how we can generate quarterly inflation forecasts. The Management Team wants to know •What are the various methods that we should use? •Who will do the forecasting? •How will the forecasting methods be implemented? •Why should EBBD spend any money on this new methodology? Why do we care about improving our forecasting and why is it worth the costs to improve it? The report should provide an initial section on the background of the situation, assumptions that we need to make, discussion of your analysis of various forecasting methods, and then a recommendation with a justification as to why you are making the recommendation. One more thing – the Management Team might want you to make an oral presentation. So you should also prepare a draft version of a PowerPoint presentation. This does not need to be a finished product, but a draft version. The written report should be comprehensive and articulate. Send me the report and the draft PowerPoint when you have them finished. Let me know if you have any questions along the way. ~DW, VP LogOps. Learning Wizard Use the readings in the Background to familiarize yourself with forecasting and forecasting methods. You should also search for additional information pertaining to forecasting in logistics and distribution. Specific Information you need to identify to use in your report: •Why is forecasting important in a distribution company? What is it you are specifically forecasting and what is this used for? •Why is forecasting accuracy important? How accurate does a forecast need to be? •What is the difference between forecasting for existing product lines and for new products? •Why should companies spend time and money to improve forecasting accuracy? •How should a company use different methods but yet integrate these methods? •How does strategic planning fit in with forecasting (at least for long term forecasting/planning)? You should know the answers to these questions and use this information in your Report to Danny Wilco. Using the background information about EBBD’s forecasting situation and the information you obtain from the background readings and your research, write a report to Danny Wilco, addressing the questions that he posed. Then develop a draft Powerpoint presentation. Upload the Report into Case 2. Upload the draft Powerpoint into Additional Files in Module 2. Assignment Expectations of the Written Report – Be sure to write this report to your boss, Wilco. The report should thoroughly address these aspects in depth and breadth: •Problem situation: clearly elucidate the current situation at EBBD •Assumptions: assumptions that need to be made and critical evaluation •Evidence: identifying information about different forecasting methods relevant to the problem •Possible solutions: combinations of different methods and techniques to meet the requirements •Recommendations: which methods and techniques are best for which specified needs •Justification & Explanation: clear reasoning as to why the recommendations were made •Writing style & Organization: well-formed sentences and paragraphs, well organized with flow of reason, and good use of language that pertain to concepts and terminology •Use of references & Citations: at least four references. Appropriate use of APA Style is required in this paper. Expectations of the Draft Presentation The draft PowerPoint should address these aspects: •Organization: the deck has a cover slide and at least 4 content slides, and information is arranged in understandable order •Content: the deck uses bullet points that articulate and interpret key points of the report and shows relevant data, charts, graphs; notes are used in Note section of slides and possible themes of the presentation are suggested. MODULE 4 [EXCEL&PAPER] EBBD EMAIL – for Internal Use Only To: You From: Danny Wilco <dwilco@ebbd.com> Subject: Re: Deliveries clogging the loading dock area OK, here’s what I want to know: how often do we have more than 5 trucks, more than 6 trucks, and more than 7 trucks. What is the highest number of trucks we may have in the system with a 95% probability? And then, assuming the arrival rate of the deliveries does not change, what does the unload rate need to be so that we can service up to five trucks 95% of the time? In other words if we want a 95% probability of 5 or fewer trucks in the system at any one time, what does the unloading (service) rate need to be? Then, consider that we have two unloading teams, each able to unload trucks at the same rate. What does the unloading rate need to be for each team in order to ensure (100%) 5 or fewer trucks in the system at any time? I know we don’t have room for two unloading teams at this time, but there is a possibility we might make room in the future. Analyze this situation and determine what we need to know and give me report. At this point in time, I am looking only for the problem to be quantified and the unload rate determined for the current situation (single server) and possible two servers. Let me know if you have any questions. ~DW, VP LogOps. Learning Wizard If you have mastered the examples and exercises provided in the Background from the Queuing PowerPoint, you are ready to tackle the EBBD problem. The current situation is a Single Server situation. Enter the arrival rate and service rate to calculate the pertinent queuing system state data. Find out the probabilities of 5 or more trucks in the system, then 6, then 7. Then use trial and error to find the greatest number of trucks or less that can be in the system with 95% (or as close to 95%). For the Multi-server problem you will need to use a similar process. Record the results of your calculations and save the Excel file. Then write your report. Upload the Report to Case 4. Upload the Excel file with the solution to Additional Files in Module 4. Assignment Expectations of the written report – write the report to your boss, Danny Wilco. The report should thoroughly address these aspects in depth and breadth: •Problem situation: clearly elucidate the problem situation at EBBD •Assumptions: what are the assumptions that need to be made and your critical evaluation •Solution: discuss how you developed the Solver solution. Keep in mind that your audience is not too technical and do not need a lot of detail on this. ◦Make sure you attach the Excel file. ◦You should refer to the Excel file when necessary. •Explanation: clear articulation of the results that you obtain, based on what Mr. Wilco is asking for. •Conclusion: Even though Mr. Wilco is not asking for a conclusion, you should determine if there is a conclusion to this situation and elucidate what it is. •Writing style & Organization: well-formed sentences and paragraphs, well organized with flow of reason, and good use of language that pertain to concepts and terminology •Use of references & citations: If you use references, be sure to include appropriate use of citations in the paper and reference list (APA is required).

Highlight the similarities and differences the organizational culture of both companies.

Assignment: Compare and Contrast Paper Students are to select two companies to compare and contrast the organizational culture of both companies. This assignment works best if you select organizations that have extreme cultural differences. As you construct the document, consider the comparison content (similarities) and the contrast content (differences). 1. Clarify a point(s) that is already known or understood about the organizations. 2. Highlight the similarities and differences. 3. Emphasize why one organization’s culture is more effective than the other. There are several ways to construct the document but the following are the most common. 1. Point by point (Most commonly used) 2. Subject by subject Point by point Introduction: The thesis statement introduces the specific topic. For example, IBM and Xerox are excellent companies to work at, but each company has different ideas toward performance promotions. (The assignment should focus on the organization’s culture). This information is usually found in the mission/vision statements of the company. Body of the Paragraph 1: IBM requires an employee to work for the company five years before being considered for a promotion based on performance. Xerox will promote an employee six months after receiving their first performance evaluation. Body of Paragraph 2: IBM believes in promoting from within the organization, whereas Xerox usually seeks external applicants to promote. Conclusion: Summary of main points. Significance of the topic. The assignment should adhere to the 6th edition of the APA manual. All written assignments are required to be a minimum of 4 pages (title and reference pages are not included) and no longer than 10 pages. Four pages for this assignment should be sufficient to indicate that you have an understanding of the companies you are comparing and contrasting.
