Literary Analysis

(NOTE: please see attached docs for specific prompt and further context)You have before you two poems – one from the period after the Russian revolution, the other during the early years of the Roman empire – which return to two texts we have read so far this semester, Genesis from The Hebrew Bible, and the Iliad. In both cases, the authors – one the (male) poet Ovid, author of the popular Metamorphoses, the other the (female) poet Anna Akhmatova, whose poetry was censored and condemned by the new Stalinist regime – engage with women characters who may seem to be marginalized in their respective texts. One is the (unnamed) wife of Lot; the other Briseis.Your primary question is this: How do these poets go about recovering these ‘lost’ voices? And how do these voices prompt you to go back and rethink these two works – which are in and of themselves projects of recovery of lost, ancient times?Be specific in your analyses; use the texts themselves – the two poems here, and what you find to be relevant passages in Genesis and the Iliad – as your evidence. As you go about answering the above, you will want to think about whether we should read these ‘revisions’ as criticisms of these earlier works, or whether one or both of our authors are responding to dynamics that they already found in the original texts.

Paraphrasing, Philosophy

Please read the passage. Write a short essay, in which you evaluate the argument(s) contained in the passage below using critical thinking.

Adult human females should be called women if only for the sake of consistency in our linguistic practice. And just to be clear, by adult, I mean a person 18 years old or older, whether that person is a high school student or a university student or a clerk or a construction worker or whatever. 18 year-old girls have the ability to be mothers, so I don\’t see how we can consistently use a non-adult word to talk about them. Likewise, they have the ability to vote, and surely anyone with that ability deserves to be talked about as a grown-up, not a child. Now, dont get me wrong, I dont want to go to silly extremes. If youd rather say young woman than just woman in some cases, I couldnt object, since an 18 year-old is certainly young in comparison to most other adults, and if you want to call women girls and men boys in some circumstances where its appropriate as a metaphor, such as when the men are acting boyishly or the women girlishly, then theres no harm in that either. The main thing to which I object is using a word for children as though it literally applied to adults also. I guess thats the main objection I have: girl is a word for a human female child, and to call women girls is to imply that they are children, which is inaccurate and probably has other negative consequences.

Tips: First, although you are not required to state explicitly what the premises and conclusion(s) are, it will probably help you to work it out explicitly, at least in your own mind. Second, dont get tricked into arguing about whether the conclusion is true or false. *****Instead, focus on determining whether the premises offered actually support the
conclusion(s).****
You may find that you agree with the conclusion but think the reasons given for believing it are bad, or you might disagree with the conclusion but be unable to find anything wrong with those particular reasons for believing it. When this sort of thing happens, ***your essay should reflect your evaluation of the argument as a whole, not just your thoughts about the conclusion(s).***
**** Likewise, resist the temptation to invent new arguments for or against the conclusion(s): just stick to evaluating what you are given in the passage.****

MUST BE WRITTEN USING CRITICAL THINKING, NOT JUST REGULAR SUMMARY!!!
