Discuss some of the difficulties your team had in using the constant growth model.

0) Choose any publicly traded common stock that pays a dividend.  There are many sources for this information (Two are www.yahoo.com andwww.reuters.com).

  1. Please provide a copy of the stock information that you used. Please let me know when (date) and where (source) you obtained the data and the name of the corporation.
  2. Fill in the following table.  Beta is a measure of market risk. Calculate the italicized items.
Item Data
Current Annual Dividend
Current Annual Earnings Per Share
Payout Rate= Dividend/EPS
Retention Rate = 1 – payout rate
Return on Equity or ROE
Analyst Estimate of Growth in Dividends
Growth = Retention Rate x ROE
Beta
Risk-free rate (10 year Treasury Bonds)
Current stock price
  1. Use the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) to calculate the required return (r) demanded by investors.  Use 5% as the market risk premium.
  2. Use the dividend discount model (also known as the constant growth model) to estimate the price of the stock.  Assume the current dividend has just been paid.
  • How close are you to the current price?
  • Some reasons why your calculation may differ from the current price: the model does not fit the firm; the estimates are incorrect or the market has mispriced the security.  Discuss some of the difficulties your team had in using the constant growth model.  In your team’s opinion, does this model work for your firm? Explain.  Limit: ½ page.

2)      (50) You need to examine an asset replacement decision for Bay Lin.

Bay Lin:  Bay Lin Businesses is in the mining industry.  They are considering replacing an old processing system with a new one.  The planning horizon is 3 years.  Jim Lee is reviewing the information on the old system.  The old processing system currently generates $28 million in sales each year for 3 years.  The cost of goods sold is 80% of sales.  Fixed costs are $2 million per year for 3 years.  The old equipment is fully depreciated, but can be sold today for $1,000,000.

The new system requires a new machine.  It will cost $18,000,000 to be depreciated on a straight-line basis to a zero book value over 3 years.  The new machine has a salvage value of $6,000,000 at the end of the 3 years.  Because of the improved quality and quantity of the mined goods, sales will increase to 40 million per year for 3 years.  Production efficiencies will reduce cost of goods sold to 55% of sales.  Gem Lee estimates fixed costs of $2,500,000 per year to cover additional promotion and advertising of the new process. The new process will require working capital.  The total investment in net working capital is $2,000,000 at time 0; 3 million at time 1; 1 million at time 2 and 0 at time 3 (Note here that the total is given rather than the change).  All operations will cease at the end of year 3.  The tax rate is 40%.

For either Bay Lin or the asset replacement of your choice, answer the following questions:

  1. a)Find the free cash flow for each year.  Be sure to estimate the horizon value OR the salvage value.   You will have a horizon value if the new asset (or process) lasts longer than the planning horizon.  You will have a salvage value if the new asset is sold at the end of the planning horizon.
  2. b)Find the weighted average cost of capital (WACC). For Bay Lin, assume the firm will use $8 million in debt to buy the new machine.  The rest of the financing is from equity.  The debt has an interest rate of 6% and a three-year life, so interest expense is $480,000 per year.  The beta on levered equity is 2.20.  Use the 10-year Treasury bond for the risk-free rate and 5% as the market risk premium.  They used their target capital structure to determine the financing for the project.
  3. c)Find the IRR.  Find the NPV of the project using the WACC?
  4. d)Should the asset or process be replaced?  Explain.  Maximum length is ½  page.

  1. e)What other considerations (or problems) are there in evaluating this decision? Maximum length is ½ page.

Explain the purpose of the Voting Rights Act. How has it been weakened in recent years.

  • Discussion Question 3: What level of government should decide? Consider at least 2 of the following issues: legalization of drugs, setting educational standards, welfare, environmental regulation and enforcement, same sex marriage and abortion. Are decisions on these issues better placed in the hands of the states or of the federal government? Why? Provide evidence of additional research on your issues. Please submit your initial answer by midnight Wednesday.
  • Discussion Question 4: What is the proper boundary between church and state? Should the first amendment be interpreted strictly so that no one’s rights are infringed by government sponsorship of religion – or should it be interpreted loosely to recognize that the U.S. is a very religious country? On the matter of religious freedom, what are the appropriate boundaries? Under what circumstances, if any, should religious freedom take precedence over the law? Illustrate your answer with specific examples. Review the CQ Researcher article on Religion and the Law and check out the videos on the Lemon Test and animal sacrifice in the content area before you answer. Please submit your initial answer by midnight Friday.
  • Discussion Question 5: Describe government surveillance programs that have developed since 9/11. Do you think these programs violate citizens’ constitutional rights or are they necessary measures to track terrorists? Justify and explain your answer. The CQ Researcher reading and the course resources for this week provide important information on this issue.  Please submit your initial answer by midnight Sunday.

  • Discussion Question 6: Explain the purpose of the Voting Rights Act. How has it been weakened in recent years? Is some form of the Voting Rights Act still needed? Why or why not? Are Voter ID laws a necessary measure to protect against fraud or do they hinder people’s voting rights? Explain. Read Chapter 5 and the CQ Researcher article before responding to this question. Please submit your initial answer by midnight Wednesday.
  • Current Events 2: This week students should post on a current event relating to the topic of civil liberties or civil rights in America. Please submit your initial answer by midnight Friday.
  • Discussion Question 7: Explain the arguments for and against Affirmative Action. Are programs like Affirmative Action still needed? Is promoting diversity a legitimate argument in favor of Affirmative Action? Is the Texas plan to admit the top students from each high school a better alternative? Why or why not? Check out the resources on Affirmative Action in the content area. Please submit your initial answer by midnight Sunday

Evaluate the use of technology, such as video tape recordings, as demonstrative evidence in the courtroom.

Assignment 2: Weekly Assignment: Do the Crime, Do the Time

Officer Johnson has been closely studying the family we have been following throughout this course. He mentioned in his report that Rob and Junior were managing the drug-based business. Mary was managing prostitution. Junior was working with some of his friends on a new capper. One of Junior’s friends was stealing computers from his employer and selling them on the Internet. Officer Johnson is also helping Lucy cope with sexual assault by her father, Rob. She was forced by her parents to get involved in prostitution. She is a minor and a victim of child abuse.

Having reached the conclusion of this course, you have seen how a normal Centervale family became involved in criminal activity. Through the previous modules, you have seen how the criminal element is transferred from the parents to the children and the affect this has on various lives in the family unit. You will now evaluate both sides of the issues in this case; from the prosecution’s perspective and defense’s perspective taking the following into account:

  • Family pressure to act a certain way for acceptance
  • Possible defenses that could be given
  • Sentencing possibilities for the various crimes you have studied

Please consider how the events of this Centervale story play out from the standpoint of the prosecution and the defense. You are to review all modules to complete this discussion.

Submission Details:

By Sunday, November 1, 2015, in a minimum of 300 words, post your responses to the following to the Discussion Area:

  • What were the considerations for the family to enter a life of crime?
  • How did involvement in crime affect interactions among the members of the family?
  • What was the impact of the parents’ behaviors on other family members and the long-term effects on each of the parties?
  • What are the various defenses that might be raised for Rob, Mary, and Junior and why?
  • What are the potential sentencing options for the three members of the family, Rob, Mary, and Junior, and why are these sentences justifiable?
  • Critically analyze the working of the American criminal justice system and suggest ways to improve it so that scenarios as given in this course can be prevented.

By Wednesday, November 4, 2015, respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts. Consider commenting on the family’s considerations for entering crime and how it affects their interactions as a unit. Comment on the considerations for potential sentencing and decipher why these sentences are justifiable. Comment on the suggested recommendations for improvements in the American criminal justice system.

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Analysis of Technology, Culture and Victims in Crime

Jamal, a straight A junior in High School, was recently involved in a physical fight with another student in the corridor of the school. Juan is a recovering alcoholic who has absenteeism issues and poor grades. Although Juan was held back in sixth grade, and struggles with social situations, he has never been involved in any disciplinary action at school. However, Jamal recently completed 90 hours of community service after being convicted of disorderly conduct and simple assault from an unrelated incident.

The school video recordings show Jamal instigating the fight, yet student witnesses reported to school officials and law enforcement that Juan was the instigator. During the investigation, a drug dog alerted law enforcement to the possibility that a controlled substance was present in Juan’s locker. When confronted by law enforcement, Juan claimed Jamal planted the drugs in Juan’s locker to hide Jamal’s own habit. Regardless, Juan was placed under arrest. An external security camera recorded a verbal altercation between law enforcement and a group of young adults who felt Juan’s arrest was racially motivated.

Tasks:

You are the District Attorney’s Investigator and have been asked to evaluate this situation as pursuant to Juan’s upcoming trial. Compose a 3-6 page paper to address the following:

  1. Identify, define, examine, and discuss the crimes potentially committed by Juan and Jamal.
  2. Identify the victim(s) in this scenario. Outline the rights of the victim(s) as they related to social responsibility.
  3. Compare and contrast the legal issues that could arise for the police department in this scenario.
  4. Analyze how societal diversity might have played a role in this case. Discuss ethical practices utilized by law enforcement that help them to maintain their objectivity throughout their investigation of this incident, Jamal and Juan’s backgrounds, and the underlying interests of social order.
  5. Evaluate the use of technology, such as video tape recordings, as demonstrative evidence in the courtroom.

Compile your paper, including all information researched, and prepare a submission paper in accordance with the following guidelines:

  • This paper is to be in APA format with a cover sheet and reference page at the end.
  • The length of the paper is to be a minimum of three pages and no more than five pages. This length does not include your cover or reference sheets.
  • Remember that APA font is Times New Roman, font size 12.

Submission Details:

  • Save the final paper as M5_A1_Lastname_Firstname.doc.

LASA 2 Grading Criteria and Rubric

All discussion assignments in this course will be graded using a rubric. This assignment is worth 300 points. Download the discussion rubric and carefully read it to understand the expectations.

Describe three or four service encounters, following the format of the examples above. Include your notes on the conversations and describe persons who participated in the interaction (age, gender, appearance, etc.).

This assignment involves submitting two drafts of the paper. The requirements for the first draft and the second draft are the same. First draft must include all the components of the assignment. It has to be prepared after conducting your observation.

“Service Encounters” project is modeled on Bailey’s research presented in his paper, “Communication of Respect in Interethnic Service Encounters,” which you can find in the “Readings”folderunder“content”onBBLearn.Re-‐-‐-‐readthe Bailey’spaperbeforestarting  the project.

The first draft is due before class through BB Learn on November 5. The final draft is due before class through BB Learn on November 24. Maximum credit available for the first draft is 40 points. Any points over 40 points allowed for the first draft will be credited as bonus points. Maximum credit available for the final draft is 50 points. In order to be graded, the paper needs to be edited for clarity and grammatical and typographic errors. Plan on consulting the Writing Center to get five bonus points !!! Even best writing can be improved. Set up an appointment to work individually with a tutor at the North or South Student Learning Center

The project involves following steps:

(1) Conduct careful observation of “service encounter” type of interactions in a real world setting

Select a setting such as convenience store, cafeteria or Starbucks, open to the public. Select time when there is not much traffic so that people are not too rushed. Observe and describe in your notes four interactions between the attendant and customer. At

least three of the conversations should involve either the customer or the service person introducing a topic not directly related to the business transaction at hand, such as in these hypothetical exchanges:

EXAMPLE I

  1. Attendant: Will that be it?
  2. Customer: Yeah. I haven’t seen you for a while?
  3. Attendant: Would you like any cash back?
  4. Customer: Nope.
  5. Attendant: Thanks for shopping at Walgreens

EXAMPLE II

1.   Attendant: Will that be it?

2.   Customer: Yeah. I haven’t seen you for a while?

3.   Attendant: I know, I went to see my boyfriend in Hawaii

4.   Customer: That’s great. Good to have you back, though

5.   Attendant: I’m glad to be back, too. Would you like any cash back?

6.   Customer: Nope.

7.   Attendant: Thanks for shopping at Walgreens

(2) Take detailed notes of your observation.

Like in Bailey’s research, your most important data will be  your  conversation data. Write down in as much detail as you can the exact words that people use in talking to each other. Also, describe people participating in the conversation (age, gender, anything else you notice)

(3) Conduct Conversation Analysis

Your analysis will address conversational uptakes on topics not directly related to the business transaction and introduced in the service encounter interactions data from your research.

Uptake: a follow up on the topic introduced by another person. An uptake is a conversational tool that helps to create conversation as a collaborative project. In doing so, it mainly serves a phatic communicative function; that is, the maintenance of social relationship between people who participate in communicative event.

To illustrate: in the EXAMPLE I above, the attendant did not offer an uptake on the customer’s inquiry, “I haven’t seen you for a while?” in line 2. In contrast, in the EXAMPLE II, the attendant did offer an uptake in line 3, by saying “I know, I went to see my boyfriend in Hawaii,” followed by the customer’s uptake, “That’s great. Good to have you back, though” (line 4) and further, by the attendant’s next uptake, “I’m glad to be back, too.”

In the analysis of your conversational data, identify statements that invite an uptake and assess whether an uptake has taken place.

(4) write a paper about 3 pages long (12-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐point font, double-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐spaced) in which you   will:

  1. describe where and when you conducted your observation
  2. describe three or four service encounters, following the format of the examples above. Include your notes on the conversations and describe persons who participated in the interaction (age, gender, appearance, etc.)
  3. present your analysis of your conversational data in which you will identify:

(i) utterances (statements, questions, etc.) that invite an uptake and (ii)either the presence or an absence of uptake.

  1. based on Bailey’s work, suggest some of the possible reasons for a person not to offer an uptake.

Please note that no points can be granted for work that does not include part b) described below

  1. describe where and when you conducted your observation      5 points
  2. describe three or four service encounters, following the format of the examples above. Include your notes on the conversations and describe persons 15 points
  3. present your analysis of your conversational data in which you will identify:
  1. utterances (statements, questions, etc.) that invite an uptake 10 points
  2. either the presence or an absence of uptake 10 points

  1. based on Bailey’s work, suggest some of the possible reasons for a person not to offer an uptake 10 points

What information would you need if you were to perform a business valuation.
