Describes fuel usage can be obtained, which can be solved analytically to give an expression for the fuel required to fly a given distance.

The idea behind this project is to investigate the costs (economic, environmental,
or other) of aviation.
For example: what does it cost to fly a Boeing 747 from London to New York?
One suggested approach could be first to consider just the cruising phase of the
journey, and that only four main forces are involved: lift, drag, thrust and weight.
Assuming that all of the forces balance, a simple ordinary differential equation
that describes fuel usage can be obtained, which can be solved analytically to give
an expression for the fuel required to fly a given distance.
The assumption of balancing horizontal forces is not strictly correct; a refined
approach would use an appropriate application of Newtons second law to correctly
account for the change in momentum due to burning fuel.
The important part of the study will be to explain the model and consider the
consequences of the result.
Possible questions that could be addressed include (but not limited to):
How much fuel does it take to fly a Boeing 747 from London to New York?
How can the simple force balance be refined to account for the change in momentum
during flight? How significant is this difference? What is the difference in
fuel requirements flying from London to New York or Edinburgh? Why do aeroplanes
fly at altitude? What are the consequences of flying higher/lower? Is there
any difference making the return trip without refuelling? What difference does
wind make? What are the consequences for engine design? Are baggage charges
justified? How do the different aspects of a journey contribute to the overall cost?
(e.g. how do take-off, climbing, and cruising etc. compare with the total cost?) Is
the airlines choice (size) of aircraft related to the distance travelled? What affects
the length of a runway? How do the various costs compare with other forms of
transport? How does the content of the plane matter? What kind of balance is
there between economic and environmental (or any other) costs? Would a 747 be
able to fly on Mars?

Impression management is something that we all employ from time to time to achieve certain goals in our life.

Impression management is something that we all employ from time to time to achieve certain goals in our life. Sometimes we want to appear likable, other times we want to appear competent, and yet other times we desire to gain control or power over a situation, all of which can yield positive outcomes. Yet at other times we self-handicap in order to appear like we have not been incompetent or failed, which we often perceive as a positive outcome because we have protected the way others see us (or at least we feel we have).

    • In what situation are you most likely to use impression management? What situation are you most likely not going to work to use impression management? What is the typical difference between these two situations?

    • Provide an example of when you used impression management successfully. What was the outcome and why?

    • Now provide an example in which you attempted to use impression management and it failed. Why did it fail, and what was that outcome?

  • In this last situation would the outcome have felt better if you had used a self-handicapping strategy? What type of self-handicapping strategy could you have used? Finally, what are the dangers of turning to this kind of strategy on a regular basis?

  1. List and describe the four general project management process phases and provide a brief summation of how the HR and IT departments work together to establish the HRIS.
  2. Identify and discuss three (3) project management approaches/tools that can help manage the HRIS project. Which of the 3 tools would be the simplest to use? Does the simplest tool make it the best tool to use? Explain.
  3. Create a 3-column, 4-row table listing the project management tools, describing how they are used, and providing at least 2 qualities for each. Name at least 3 means by which tighter control over the HRIS project may be attained.
  4. Propose six (6) organizational and management requirements necessary in the successful completion of the HRIS. Select any two (2) of the six you feel are very important and explain your rationale.
  5. Suggest at least four (4) critical success factors in HRIS development and implementation and explain why you feel each is important to overall project success.
  6. Use at least four (4) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting guidelines:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of using a Gantt chart versus using the Performance evaluation and review technique (PERT) and critical path method (CPM) when managing projects.

Due Week 6 and worth 180 points

Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:

  1. Construct a Cost-Benefit Analysis matrix for an organization that is considering replacing its internal payroll system with a payroll outsourcing service. Include direct and indirect revenue enhancements and direct and indirect cost reductions.
  2. Assess the risks associated with integrating a new payroll system and suggest what the project management team can do to minimize those risks.
  3. Compose the tasks that would be needed to complete a Gantt chart (project schedule) for outsourcing the company’s payroll system. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of using a Gantt chart versus using the Performance evaluation and review technique (PERT) and critical path method (CPM) when managing projects.
  4. Propose three (3) types of feedback loops the project management team can implement so that potential users of the new payroll system can provide advice, suggestions, and guidance to the team during project development and implementation. Suggest how the project management team can filter out irrelevant information and target critical information provided by potential users of the new system.
  5. Suggest three (3) types of behavioral problems that employees can manifest as a result of replacing the organization’s legacy payroll system with an outsourced solution. Compose three (3) guidelines that a project manager can use to mitigate employee resistance to change.
  6. Use at least four (4) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Create a project management plan and prepare the organization for the implementation.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in human resource information systems.
  • Write clearly and concisely about human resource information systems using proper writing mechanics.

Briefly describe the program and its relationship to the organizational mission.

Now that we have covered some of the basic concepts in managerial accounting, we might want talk a little about the final project so you can keep the objectives of the project in mind as you work through the next few chapters. For your final project due in Week 8, you will create a new/enhanced program proposal.

You may complete this as an individual or team exercise. You may complete any of the following formats:

  • Submit a new program proposal (Possibly one that you and/or your firm is working on now or recently completed)
  • Submit a proposal for capital equipment or a new position
  • Submit a business proposal for a new business ( A new “start-up” venture that you or a group of people are contemplating)

Prepare a proposal using either the format provided in class or a format you would be required to use in your present company. The proposal can focus on cost savings or revenue-generating programs. I strongly suggest that you use a program that you have or plan to propose to the organization for which you work. It is much easier to work with actual figures than to make up a fictitious company and researching what the possible figures might be. The proposal should include (but is not limited to) the following information:

  • Briefly describe the program and its relationship to the organizational mission.
  • How will you price your product, what is the mark up.
  • Discuss the return on investment.
  • What are the Net Present Value and/or project’s Payback Period?
  • If capital equipment is involved, is there a lease versus buy decision.
  • Do you require new personnel, if so complete the appropriate form and submit a job description?
  • How will you fund this new program?
  • Create a 1 year budget for the program.
  • If this is a new business, what is the legal structure and what method of accounting will you use and why.

This document should be no more than 10 pages. The cover sheet should include the type of proposal you are submitting, the name of your team members (if applicable) and their role in the project. Second page should be an executive summary giving a brief description of the project and any information you find pertinent (maximum 250 words).

Format is important, and you are expected to present the information in an attractive, professional manner. If your use references, please make sure they are cited either in the footnotes or at the end of the paper. A title page and a table of contents lends to the organization of the paper. The document must be double-spaced, and professionally prepared (i.e., using basic APA style and/or www.isiresearchsoft.com for bibliographic formatting resources) spell-checked, clearly organized, and clearly summarized, with accurate citations for all referenced work.

You may only use Microsoft Word or Excel to develop your paper; remember that you must show your calculations. Papers submitted in .pdf format are also acceptable.

If you include proprietary information from your organization, please mark your paper confidential to ensure that its contents will not be used as an example in future classes.

Lastly, please make sure that the project employs some form of financial statements, capital expenditure worksheets, and/or any other pertinent accounting support schedules that we will employ throughout this course. Every project that is submitted must have some numerical support and accounting schedules, not just a written analysis. We need to practice integrating both numbers in words in our analyses throughout the MBA program at BU.
