Policy Development: Draft Instructions

Law enforcement organizations are facing a tremendous problem with social media. On one hand, social media such as Facebook, My Space, and Twitter can be extremely useful for effective and efficient communication. On the other hand, Law Enforcement Executives are constantly facing situations in which employee misconduct is occurring through social media. Police Officers are accessing social media from their workstations and patrol cars during their shifts. Police Officers are posting information that is unbecoming for an officer as well as degrading and disrespectful to the profession. Police unions and police officer organizations such as the Fraternal Order of Police and the PBA are opposed to departmental policies that infringe on police officers’ constitutional rights.

******Answer these questions as well******

How do law enforcement organizations regulate the use of social media? Just about every major law enforcement organization has a Facebook account associated with the organization’s website. Therefore, should law enforcement organizations regulate individual officer’s social media activity?

——As the policy manager for your law enforcement organization, please research the best practices related to the regulation of police officers’ use of social media and develop a department policy. This research should include interviews with your local law enforcement leaders to determine how they are addressing this issue.

You must have at least 5 pages not including your title page.

Discuss how has industrialization and growth of a country impacted the environment.

Your final paper should run about 8 pages.

Structure

This is a traditional research paper.  You should begin with a question or series of questions, your account of research and the state of debate on your question and a conclusion based on your research.

Topics

The topic must be related to the theme of the course – the development and current state of the economies of Asia.  Below is a list of possible topics, though you may choose another topic as long as it is relevant to the course.

  • To what extent have the major economies of Asia relied on state-led development?
  • What has been the role of export-led growth in Asia (or in a particular country)?
  • How important has the use of capital and exchange controls been in countries that have used them (India, China, Malaysia)?
  • Are the growth rates of India and/or another country or group of countries sustainable?
  • What is the role of trade with China and Japan in the development of other economies in Asia?
  • What kind of development path has a particular country pursued?
  • To what extent has the development of the smaller economies of Asia (or a particular country) been driven by FDI from other countries?
  • To what extent has the development of Asian economies (or a particular country) been driven by low wages?
  • What do social indicators tell us about the state of human development in Asia (or in a particular country)?
  • What is Abenommics and is it likely to pull Japan out of its stagnation?
  • How has fiscal policy in China helped avert stagnation since the 2008 world economic downturn?
  • How has the world economic downturn affected other economies in Asia?
  • How has industrialization and growth of a country impacted the environment?
  • How has economic reform impacted poverty rates or other measures of social well-being?
  • To what extent are the economies of Asia dependent on exports to the US and EU and how is this likely to change, given the weakness of these economies?

You may also choose a historical topic, like whether conditions improved for working people under Maoism in China, whether India’s five year plans were successful in alleviating poverty.

These are just ideas.  You may choose any other related topic.

Grading

Grades will be based on:

  • The specificity of your question and overall topic.
  • Good use of sources and quotations to support points and show the current state of discussion/debate on your topic.
  • Quality of writing.
  • Structure of argument in answering your question and deriving a conclusion.
  • Good use of data to support conclusions.

Sources

The best sources of information can be found in Academic Search Complete on the library’s website.  The Far East Economic Review and Pacific Review are particularly good sources and are not too technical.  You may also use non-academic sources like the Asian Wall Street Journal, Financial Times or Economist Magazine.  Apec.org and ASEAN.org are good sources of information, as are the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, IMF and government sources in any of the countries you are researching.

You should use at least four sources outside of the assigned readings.  You should also include at least one table or chart using data to support points.

The description in the file is a string, so you will have to use the getline to read that in (it will be from your infile stream instead of the keyboard stream).

hello, this is the problem

Write a program to read a parts list from the attached parts.dat file.

  • Create a menu of options that will be used in a switch statement.  The options for this program will be L) Load and Print Inventory File and Q) Quit.  You will keep showing the menu and asking what option they want until they press Q to quit.  We will be adding abilities to this program over the next few assignments so for now these are the only two options we will have. (hummm…. do you have another program you did something similar too that you might be able to take that code and turn it into this request?)

  • If loading (L) – ask the user for the filename – when using a string in the open file command you will have to use the string method c_str() this returns a c-style string that the open command is expecting — for example if your string variable to hold the prompted filename is file_name and your ifstream variable is called infile the command would look like infile.open(file_name.c_str()); — also you probably will need to clear the buffer before you read in the file_name (#include <limits> and use code as shown in assignment #9 for reading in a string)

  • The file will have part number (int), price (double), and description (string) — use the file attached for this assignment.  The fields will be separated by a comma (partno, price, description) – when you read in the file you will need to read in the comma as a single char just to get that character out of the file so you can read the next value.

  • You will need to create a part structure that will hold the above members (partno, price, description). (you will not be directly using this, you will only be touching this through the pointer that you will define in the next step).

  • You will need to create a pointer to the previous part structure you just created.

  • Using the pointer and the arrow operator, you will read from the file into the pointer->members.  Also in your loop that you are reading the file,  you will print the part number, description and price (using pointer->members).  The description in the file is a string, so you will have to use the getline to read that in (it will be from your infile stream instead of the keyboard stream).

Unemployment insurance is designed to help the unemployed.

Assignment 1: Unemployment and the Economy

For this assignment, you should use the information in the textbook and the information found on the official Department of Labor website, http://www.bls.gov/home.htm.

Unemployment is one of the major concerns that people have in today’s economy, since losing one’s job can be one of the most devastating events a person can experience. But what do the numbers actually mean? What is the actual state of the economy, in terms of its ability to generate jobs for its citizens?

Questions:

  1. What is the labor force participation rate? What was the labor force participation rate in 2008? How has it changed since 2008 and what does this change imply for the state of the economy? Does the labor force participation rate effect the unemployment rates reported in the media?
  1. How is unemployment measured and reported?
  1. What is a discouraged worker? Are they included in the basic unemployment rate? Are they included in any measure of unemployment? How has the number of discouraged workers changed since 2008? How does the exclusion of the discouraged worker affect the basic unemployment rate reported in the media?
  1. What is frictional unemployment? What is structural unemployment? What is cyclical unemployment? What economic policies should be used to deal with these types of unemployment? Which type is most prevalent in today’s economy?
  1. Unemployment insurance is designed to help the unemployed. Do these benefits encourage or discourage a person from looking for work? How long should these benefits last?
  1. Does the existence of unions help or hurt the overall economy and the employment rate? Why or why not?

There are always new and innovative products being produced daily. People like the thought of having products that can help them improve their day to day living. Pet owners don’t get to many opportunities to see new and innovative products. Pets are becoming more common in households and many pets suffer from the same illnesses as humans. The Quiet Cat would be an organization that specializes in creating products used by pet owners to administer subcutaneous fluids to their ill cats. The Quiet Cat would create devices that can immobilize and soothe a cat so that one could administer fluids quietly and easily by themselves. Any pet owner that has dealt with renal failure knows it can often be a struggle to get their beloved pet their much needed fluids. These devices would make the overall experience less traumatic and stressful for both the owner and their pet.
Our mission is to provide lifetime care to the pet parent and their pet by offering innovative solutions through unbeatable products and services. The Quiet Cat would create innovative solutions to help aide pet owners in administering at home care to their sick pets. Many pets require long term treatment and trips to the vet can become quite costly and be more than people are willing to spend. By offering innovation products and excellent customer service we aim to meet the needs of the consumer as well as reduce the number of animals dropped off at shelters due to pet owners not being able to afford the care they need. We want our customers to have a pleasant experience and know they can trust us in providing a superior product and knowing that our staff can answers their questions and concerns about the products use or safety of the product. Through the excellent customer service provided we plan to expand our company.
We plan to test a small area to see how well our products take off. We are targeting pet owners who may be having difficulty administering fluids or any medication in general to their pets. Upon doing a little research there appears to be a need for such products as many pet owners feel they are letting their pets down when they are not able to provide proper treatment. If we target a small area and find the products start to take off we can consider global expansion further down the line. We would want to team up with local vets first and explain the benefits of our products to see how well the product sells. If it seems to be doing well can consider expanding globally in the years to come.
The Quiet Cat will be providing innovative products to pet owners to assist with day to day medical needs. Should the product take off and be successful the Quiet Cat hopes to expand globally. We want to show that we can be competitive but provide long term care products and exceptional customer service. We want our name to become a household name, a brand that pet owners can trust.
