What abilities will help Juanita succeed and potentially fail in this assignment as an expatriate.

his assignment is designed to integrate the reflection of personal experience and the information covered in the textbook. Assuming you are Ludmilla responding to a recent email from Juanita, answer the following questions:

  • Besides cultural differences, what other factors might affect human resource management with this international office?
  • What abilities will help Juanita succeed and potentially fail in this assignment as an expatriate?
  • What has been the reason for the high failure rate of expatirate managers in Uzbekistan? What can Ludmilla do to increase the success of expats?
  • Since Uzbekistan has been significantly influenced by Russia for over 70 years, from Hofstede’s perspective, what impact has culture had on appraisal systems, self- managing teams, and

Analyze the systems errors and/or human factors errors that should be considered with regard to this safety risk.

Application: Patient Safety Risks

As noted in the Institute of Medicine report, To Err is Human, “It may be part of human nature to err, but it is also part of human nature to create solutions, find better alternatives, and meet the challenges ahead” (Institute of Medicine, 1999, p. 15).

What are the most common—or most significant—risks to patient safety? How do these risks vary in different health care settings or with disparate groups of patients? What can be done to address these risks? You will explore these questions and more in this Application Assignment.

To prepare for this Application:

  • Begin by brainstorming types of health care organizations and groups of patients (e.g., geriatric patients requiring chronic care, pediatric patients admitted for acute care). Identify a particular type of setting and/or patient population to help you pinpoint your focus for the following step.
  • Review the National Patient Safety Goals, the CDC’s NHSN Web site, and the information on patient safety concerns presented in the other Learning Resources. Select a specific patient safety risk (e.g., patient falls, medication reconciliation) to focus on for this assignment.
  • Analyze the systems errors and/or human factors errors that should be considered with regard to this safety risk.
  • Reflect on related insights that could be gained from high-reliability organizations. What approaches do these organizations use that might be applicable within a health care organization?
  • Consider the strategies and tools (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean) that could be used to assess and reduce this particular risk.
  • Evaluate the potential benefits of patient and family involvement and steps that could be taken to ensure that they are included in this endeavor.

Write a 4- to 5-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Briefly summarize the patient safety risk you have selected, and provide a rationale for why it deserves particular attention.
  • Analyze the influence of systems errors and human factors errors with regard to this risk.
  • Discuss related insights that could be gained from high-reliability organizations and how they might be applied within a health care organization.
  • Propose strategies and tools for assessing and reducing risk related to this safety issue.
  • Describe how patients and patients’ families can be involved in addressing this issue.

This Application is due at the end of Week 5. See the Week 5 Application area for submission instructions.

Your written assignments must follow APA guidelines. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and from additional scholarly sources as appropriate. Refer to the Essential Guide to APA Style to ensure that your in-text citations and reference list are

The New Product Development Process

In preparation for a presentation to the CEO of the organization next week on a product development strategy, prepare the following paper:

Choose a product (not a service) which means it must be tangible. Prepare a paper addressing the following tasks on your selected product.

Checklist:

  1. Describe your new product. You have many choices. It could be a classically innovative product, new-category entry, an addition to the product line or line extension. It could even include more minor product changes like product improvements, repositioning, or cost reductions.
  2. Discuss the new product development process.
  3. Discuss your new product launch strategy. Recall, launching requires that objectives be set, the strategy be developed, and that the implementation be planned and executed. Implementation is often a key factor in product failure.
  4. Discuss the pricing strategy for your new product
  5. You will provide a 3–5 page (APA formatted) paper with at least three supporting references. You should include at least one illustration which can

Describe the proper procedures and policies that would be implemented specific to the DR team personnel as well as special equipment that would be required.

Consider a scenario where the contingency planning management team (CPMT) of your organization has designated you as the disaster recovery team leader, and the preparation and planning of this component of the security program is now under your purview with a team of 11 employees including yourself.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

  1. Detail the DR team roles, responsibilities, and sub teams that would be implemented, and construct an organizational chart for the team through the use of graphical tools in Visio, or an open source alternative such as Dia. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length.
  2. Describe the proper procedures and policies that would be implemented specific to the DR team personnel as well as special equipment that would be required.
  3. Draft an executive summary to the DR plan and explain the purpose of the plan and high-level specifics for upper management.
  4. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
  • Include charts or diagrams created in Visio or Dia. The completed diagrams / charts must be imported into the Word document before the paper is submitted.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Develop a disaster recovery plan for an organization.
  • Compare and contrast the methods of disaster recovery and business continuity.
  • Develop techniques for different disaster scenarios.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in disaster recovery.
  • Write clearly and concisely about disaster recovery topics using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.

Describe in detail the business venture.

We are beginning working on a business entity analysis assignment.  In this assignment, you start by considering what your dream business would be, your concerns and the different forms of ownership available.

  • Describe in detail the business venture-
  • Next, using the business entities chart on uploaded document,  describe your primary concerns for this business (i.e. personal liability, capitalization, alienation, duration etc.)

This should be done in essay form.  Remember, the ultimate point of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of the differences of all of the business entities and their impact on the issues.

Discuss these results and compare to the previous analysis.

Carlisle company is in need of new production line equipment that will increase the throughput and allow them to meet anticipated demand for the next 10 years. This equipment is the H5500 Robotics platform which has proven to be highly reliable when installed at the company’s other divisions. The shipping costs, sales tax, installation cost for the H5500 will be $120,000. The equipment itself will cost $380,000. The operating and maintenance costs for the equipment is anticipated to be $30,000 per year escalating at the rate of inflation of 3% per year. The company’s tax rate is 30%. If the annual receipts are as shown in the table below and using a straight line depreciation what is the company’s anticipated before and after tax profit per year. Note, the salvage value of the equipment is expected to be $50000 at the end of the 10th year.

Explain what Burnham means he says that the “embellishment” of the citywould improve the social issues of the community, such as the physical and moral health, versus reforming tenement issues where the root of one’s values and virtues are usually seen essentially in the home-base for development.

THIS IS THE ASSIGMENT

This week’s material talks about significant flaws of  the 1909 Plan of Chicago.
For a better understanding let’s slightly rewind in time. The main idea of what we call today “urban planning” began in the United States from the City Beautiful movement. It was basically a philosophy of architecture and urban planning which existed between the 1890’s and the 1920’s. It believed that the embellishment of cities would improve social issues and consequently peoples’ quality of life. Burnham essentially took an aesthetic approach to urban planning that, according to Garb, heightened the aesthetic experience (parks, playgrounds, interactive installation art as seen in Chicago today, etc) of a city versus the urban population growth and efficient housing development and design to supplement.
Instead he focused on “forging a new relationship between the city and the citizen” (Garb, 101). He believed that the most efficient way to Americanize the thousands of immigrants from different countries and cultures was to create civic centers, urban parks, common areas and boulevards where people would get educated and new dwellers would learn the “values and virtues of American life”. One should note the harsh reality that he was very adamant in the disbelief that immigrant mothers had the ability to raise their children in the slums, probably resulting from their “hereditary and habitual behaviors”. He saw it as the city’s duty to step in to “Americanize” immigrants and that the slums were created “only because of the failure of the city to protect itself against gross evils and known perils…”.
The movement gained strength in 1893 with the world’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Burnham commanded the construction of the fair’s temporary city after known as the White City. It really was the “dream city” because while building it they had the opportunity to touch many aspects of general construction: architecture, landscape architecture, transportation, design, sanitation, and the arts. They planted the seeds of what would be the first comprehensive city plan in our country. Even though poverty, crime and racial issues were hidden from the 26 million visitors, thanks to the world fair the White City project became the muse for Burnham’s 1909 Plan for the creation of the modern American city.
The plan’s main intention was to rebuild the industrial city mainly based on models of Baron Haussmann’s Paris. Burnham neglects the tremendous need for “slums” and tenement reform in his plan focusing in favor of improving and beautifying public spaces as a way to “Americanize” immigrant families with the “virtues and values” of the nation. This sort of social reform is also due to the “divorce” of professional planners (usually male) and housing reformers (usually female like Adams from previous reading). Burnham focused on new technologies of transportation, production/consumerism, and communication. Burnham believed the modern city was the consumer city, never forgetting that beauty and commerce were connected.

Both Burnham and Bellamy who are contemporaries, were visionaries and had similar desires for the future of their countries. As optimists they envisioned harmonious relationships between citizens, beautiful and useful public spaces, all towards a “perfect” American society, socially and economically.
ANALYSIS QUESTIONS
1) Explain what Burnham means he says that the “embellishment” of the citywould improve the social issues of the community, such as the physical and moral health, versus reforming tenement issues where the root of one’s values and virtues are usually seen essentially in the home-base for development.  How has Los Angeles implemented this aesthetic approach to form this kind of nourishment of value/virtue relationship between the city and its immigrant and native citizens? Think about physical/mental/moral influence with all or specific demographic. How do you think the definition of “American ideals” has changed or stayed the same?

2) What is your major? Describe or sketch an innovative and creative way in which Woodbury can form this relationship between the school and its students/faculty authentically USING THE TOOLS FROM YOUR MAJOR. Some of you may want to think about marketing, design plan or mapping, financial dividends and fundraising, installations, tenement reforms, etc. Your ideas could be implemented to make a real, integral community shift here at Woodbury!

MY CLASSMATE ANSWER

When Burnham talks about the “embellishment” of the city, I think he is thinking that creating a cohesive environment in which all elements are interconnected would ideally turn places of poverty into the “perfect American” communities. I got the feeling throughout the readings that Burnham believed if immigrants looked at their surroundings and got a visual of the “American Dream” that they would completely forget about the conditions they were actually living in, and the struggles that they were actually facing. Meaning that this new collective mindset would force out the social issues on its own, leaving Burnham with no need to actually reform the structures. Los Angeles is a huge melting pot, and there are so many different people and cultures existing in a relatively small area. I will give use the Arts District in Downtown as an example. Located in between Skid Row, Little Tokyo, and Olvera Street, the blending of cultures that exist together inside of the small radius that is the Arts District is crazy (and pretty awesome in my opinion.) What they are doing now along Traction Ave, somewhat of a Gentrification process, is what I would compare to Burnham’s “embellishment” of the city. Specialty shops, and stores, and innovative office spaces like The Hub, are being built up in such a way that “beautifies” this area. This process in a way brings every co-habitant together, forming a totally new and counter-culture that this community has become a part of.
In terms of “American ideals,” I don’t think that they will ever stay the same. They are different now than they were in 1901, and they are even different now than they were 10 years ago. Our society is constantly changing, and the “American Dream” if you will, adjusts and shifts with these changes. I mean, myself for an example. I am 23 years old, still haven’t graduated, still living with my parents, with no solid plans of marriage or kids any time soon, and right now in society, that is the “American ideal.” Compare that to when my grandmother was 23, she was married already for a few years, had children, and never worried about getting a degree. Now that might sound crazy to some of us (given that we are all college students working towards a difficult degree), but during her time, that really was the “American ideal,” or the “American Dream,” and years from now, when people look back on what the “American ideal” was in our time, it is likely that they will be thinking we were choosing to live pretty crazy lives too.
Given that my major is INDS, and we pretty much pull from faculty members of any area. INDS is a major that I feel actually already does a pretty good job of this based on the fact that we work very closely with our advisers on what will become our senior thesis pretty much throughout the entirety of our time here at Woodbury. They also require we form a committee that includes one teacher from each discipline, an INDS faculty member (who it is likely that we already know fairly well), and the chair. The tools used for INDS are all about exploring a problem through different lenses, and to do so, we must draw from the brains of professors from different backgrounds. Through these types of ongoing conversations, an authentic bond is created between the student and the professional. If there was one thing that I would change about the major to help strengthen that relationship, I think I would introduce some type of forum that all INDS students have access to, with divisions made based on what stage of the degree a student is in. In the forum, students would be able to chat with each other, leave posts for faculty to respond to, leave suggestions, schedule appointments, look up their student worksheet etc. This would create an opportunity for the faculty members to see where students are confused, what the students feel is working well, and what could possibly be improved.
I NEED TO WRITE A COMMENT TO HIS ANSWER

THIS IS HOW THE COMMET SHOULD BE “respond to one or more students’ initial post. This response should be brief yet substantive, inquisitive and courteous. In other words, be engaged with your fellow student’s ideas, ask him or her questions to both gain deeper understanding and to challenge their assumptions, however, always treat others with respect. This post should be about three or four sentences.”

Monster Beverage Corporation, also known as Hansen Natural Corporation, was found in the 1930s by Hansen’s family in Los Angeles, California.

Monster Beverage Corporation, also known as Hansen Natural Corporation, was found in the 1930s by Hansen’s family in Los Angeles, California. In 1992, Hansen Natural Corporation introduced natural soda and apple juice. As the company expanded, they added energy drinks to their market. In 2012, Hansen Natural Corporation changed their company’s name to Monster Beverage Corporation. After changing their company’s name to Monster Beverage Corporation, their numbers of common stock increased by double. The company develops, markets, sells, and distributes beverages in the USA and internationally, operating in Direct Store Delivery and Warehouse. Direct Store Delivery develops, markets, and sells energy drinks through an exclusive distributor network. Warehouse develops, markets, and sells juice-based products and soda beverages directly through retailers. Monsters Beverage Corporation offers more than 100 different beverages to the beverage industry.
FUNCTIONS
Global Presence and Cultural Accommodation
Monster Beverages Corporation understands that the social media is an important element that helps everyone connect with the company. Therefore Monster has translated their website into more than 50 different languages. On their website, Monster has many sections regarding their activities such as global posts. The global posts section included news, galleries, music and videos about the sports and events that company were involved with (Monster, n.d.). With this network, Monster® Energy drinks are known and available in 114 countries. Beside the company’s website, the company is featured on Facebook and Twitter where the customers and staff around the world could access it. At the same time, Monster has an exclusive relationship with Loop’d Network. It is an online sports social media platform with more than 200,000 members worldwide. (Social Media tips from Monster Energy, 2007) This online sports social media allowed Monster to develop a Monster Army by offering athlete interview photos, videos, contests, and sponsorship opportunities. Although, Monster had an exclusive relationship with a strong social media, it’s only available for athletes. Therefore, they receive a grade of 3 out of 5.
Marketing and Sales
Marketing and sales always go hand in hand with each other. The more exciting the ad is, the faster the company captures the attention it needs to increase sales. In the article “Social Media tips from Monster Energy” by Melisa Campanedii, the director of sports marketing for Corona, John Lee, said, “We are actually going after the next generation through the Monster Army program….our army members and our reserves, who are talking it up, telling 10 of their friends, who tell 10 of their friends.” There were 50,000 athletes that signed up for Monster Army since it created. Unlike other companies, Monster marketing only focuses on the younger athletes and sporting events. For example, Monster sponsored many of the sporting activities such as motocross, BMX, mountain biking, skating, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, and wakeboarding. Monster used the social media to build a strong marketing strategy which has helped sale increase domestically and internationally. According to the 2013 annual report, the sale increased from $2.37 billion in 2012 to $2.59 billion in a year. The international sale had increased to $580.6 million in 2013 compared to $513.9 million in 2012. Although, their sale has increased last year, their market is still limited to athletes. Therefore, they receive a grade 4 out of 5.
Public Relations
Since the social media has become part of our everyday lives, many companies use this opportunity to improve their marketing strategies, products, services, and sales. Companies’ social media pages have become key for the relationship between a company and its customer. There are about 70,000 people following the company and more than 24 million likes on Monster’s Facebook page. (Facebook: Monster). Besides Monster’s Facebook page, 1.11 million people also follow Monster on this company’s twitter pages.( Twitter: Monster) People and staff post pictures, videos, and information, while commenting on sports and events that the company has been involved in. The links are not only available solely for customer viewing, but are also there for Monster to connect with the media and have them evaluate Monster’s products. For example, people post and tag their favorite drinks on Facebook and Twitter. They post comments about new products, and they follow sporting activities sponsored by Monster. By listening and viewing people’s comments, Monster receives a 4 out of 5.
Community and Outreach Services
Like some of the companies, Monster pays back its community with the profit they have earned by through the Monster Energy Gives Back Program that was formed in 2011. It is a nonprofit organization supporting the scene, people, and athletes in need. The program has attempted to make a difference and change people’s lives. For example, the Monster Energy Gives Back Program granted Daniel’s wish in August, 2012. They customized a brand new wheelchair with the Angels theme. They got him and his family tickets to the Angel’s baseball game. They took him onto the field to watch batting practice and to meet some of the players. Another event held in the late August of 2012 was Racing With the Pros, featuring celebrity appearances and races that the Monster Energy athletes were entered in. The event is in celebration of the launch of an ongoing partnership between Pole Position Raceway and Starlight Children’s Foundation of NY, NJ, and CT as part of its give-back charter CAReS (Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Recover and thoSe in need). Although Monster has been involved in many charity and fundraiser events in the past, it has been stopped for 2 years. Therefore it will receive 3 out of 5.

Discussed in this assignment, New Urbanism, according to the TED talk and Saab’s article experiences various achievements and shortcomings.

Film still from the film The Truman Show; the movie was filmed in the actual town of Seaside, Florida, a New Urbanist development.)
This week we are reading about the planning trend that began in the 1980s in response to the “unplanned sprawl” of the American suburban landscape.  A group of architects and planners began to reimagine the basic residential neighborhood units by looking to earlier urban architectural patterns that to the seemed to provide a prescription for a strong sense of place and community.
As the Charter of New Urbanism and the reading on the Pedestrian Pocket park describe in more detail, this new planning movement sought to create landscapes that prioritize the pedestrian over the automobile, that position work space closer to residential space, that features ample open space, and that contains a variety of densely built housing that would accommodate a range of residents – not just the nuclear family of two parents and a few kids.  Part of the mission of the Congress for New Urbanism states, “We stand for the reconfiguration of sprawling suburbs into communities of real neighborhoods and diverse districts, the conservation of natural environments, and the preservation of our built legacy. ”
Some of the basic physical features of the New Urbanism include:
• Sidewalks and Narrow Streets to promote pedestrian traffic.  No one should need to depend on a car;  should not have to walk farther than five minutes to obtain basic goods and services.

• Garages should be located behind homes or in alleys.  On-street parking only;  no parking lots.

• Buildings are mixed in size, style, price and function

• High density of construction, parks, open spaces, plazas, and squares facilitate community among residents.

As you watch Kunstler’s TED talk and as you read Saab’s article “Historical Amnesia,” think about how their two perspectives come into conflict.  For this week’s post, I want you to reflect on the following question:

What are the main achievements and shortcomings of New Urbanism?  Use specific evidence from the TED talk and from Saab’s article to inform your answer.

THIS IS MY ANSWER

As discussed in this assignment, New Urbanism, according to the TED talk and Saab’s article experiences various achievements and shortcomings. They include the following;
Achievements of New Urbanism
Firstly, it should be characterized by dense development in that it allows residents to walk to the major centers in a short period, combines elements such as residential, workplaces and commercial. This enhances many daily activities to be carried on within walking distances, thus those who do not drive feel included in their culture, mostly old aged and young population.
Secondly, a wide range of housing types within varying price levels which bring people of different economical classes, age and races together. This will strengthen the bond in a community facilitating healthy development. Also, land use permits public transportation to become a better alternative to the automobile since transit stops and pick up points are within walking distance. Schools, health centers and other government institutions are strategically located in neighborhoods to enable the users to walk or bicycle to them. Site of buildings provide the people with a sense of location, inform them where they are as a culture and further enable natural means of heating and cooling to conserve energy.
Thirdly, New Urbanism promotes use of resources among centers more cooperatively to avoid unnecessary competition but rather enhance reasonable coordination of services such as transportation, housing and community institutions.
The other achievement is affordable housing distributed throughout the region matches job opportunities available and avoids concentration of poverty. This reduces the probability of slum dwellings in metropolitan. Housing is planned to provide each of the household types with affordable homes that meet their needs. Families with children, couples or single parents need an environment where they can move safely, kids playing ground with integrated day care and less commuting time.
Also it integrates motorists in the community, homes with attached garage and drive-ins are included. This all-inclusive design of an urban infrastructure restores our lost sense of community and place.
Furthermore, there is a commercial mix that attempts to balance housing with desirable job markets, public services, food stores and entertainment arenas.
Shortcomings of new Urbanism
Under the new urbanism, over 73 percent of new households lack at least one of the traditional models of husband, wife and children. The elderly group makes up 23 percent of the total number of home owners, and 20 percent represented by single parents. This is greatly affected by affordability of owning a home in a metropolitan and the cost of living with a large family.
Other shortcomings of New Urbanism are the consequences of pollution and low air quality, displacement of investment from existing centers to create space for transit ways, the design of streets and sidewalks should be done considering safety and security of users which in contrast, hinders accessibility and openness.
Also, accommodating automobiles in a way that respect the pedestrians and public space becomes hard in terms of planning.
Redevelopment of cities and towns respecting historical boundaries and patterns is a huge obstacle, mostly due to certain historical groups who are rigid to change their ways in the name of development. Intense civic education is necessary to such groups for the better of New Urbanism.
Moreover, New Urbanism may not meet the intended purpose and varies considerably due to topographic complexity. Some regions might be too small to accommodate all the amenities needed by the occupants. Also, new transit systems like light rails may experience resistance from groups not wanting to leave their usual mode of transport like personal cars.
Finally, these new forms give a good percentage of people a restless, hollow feeling and instability of their families.
In conclusion, we find that the achievements in New Urbanism outdo the shortcomings. Thus, New Urbanism is of benefit both economically and socially.

Abdullah,
Your response demonstrates many of the practical advantages and disadvantages to the New Urbanist planning mode.  How does Saab critique the movement in historical terms?

MY CLASSMATE ANSWER

The TED talk “The ghastly tragedy of the suburbs,” by James Howard gives examples why most of the cities (about 38,000 places in America) lack of a good design affecting the “Public Realm”. According to James Howard, the consequences of these developments are anxiety and stress. That is why architects and developers need to create spaces worth caring about because these places give a sense of ownership. James thinks that suburbia is a bad solution for urbanism. In his lecture he gave key factors to improve the quality of life. James finishes his lecture by talking about the bad applications of these factors and mentioned that the new urbanism is the solution for contemporary American cities.

The article of Joan Saab questions the sufficiency of new urbanism and compares it to the failures of Democracity and Futurama movement of the 20th Century. Joan gives good points by analyzing four developments that the new urbanism has built. This shows why this new urbanism can fail again. One of the biggest concerns is that this movement is full of nostalgia that creates imaginary past and falls into historical amnesia. She concluded her article saying, “The real new urbanism should not look at the past for its models it should create new response to real conditions of the present.”

After analyzing the arguments of Joan Saab, I don’t believe that the new urbanism is the solution to modern urban problems. It seems almost as a utopia which doesn’t address the real problem. The reality is that trying to solve urban problems is something complex because it has to do with so many things that effect the behavior of its habitants. It’s true that in the past some elements were successful to improve the public realm, but nowadays, these historical elements have to innovate to deal with new factors such as social network. I don’t think that historical event or styles need to be divorced from modern urbanism problems and that nostalgia is the solution. To me the solutions for urbanization should consider scientific facts and critical analysis with architectural lenses.
