WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT
POLITICAL ADVOCACY

Nurses maintain values that promote individualized patient care and collaboration among health care professionals. It is important that nurses are represented in the formation of health care policy and that these values, as well as nursing knowledge and expertise, are shared with politicians and reflected in quality health care legislation that is cost-effective. Nursing\’s active involvement in the molding of public policy through political commitment is a necessity; it is not enough to wait and see where legislation takes the profession and how changes in public policy will affect patients. If nurses do not become involved and employ a values-laden approach to politics, they have no power over their own future, and health care will suffer from their lack of participation.
For this assignment, the student will choose a health care bill that is presently being considered in the legislatures of either the federal or New York State government. You can use a free website for your search such as www.BillTrack50.com. This bill should have implications that will directly affect nursing practice. Examples will be given in class.
1.Identify the bill and its numbers. Provide a copy of the proposal and summarize the intent as well as its implications for the nursing profession.
2.Find out where it is in the process of becoming law.
3.Write an advocacy letter either for or against its passage and address it to the chairperson of the committee as well as your representative. Be sure that you have identified the appropriate person for your district. Send it to them via email.
4.Provide your email and any responses you may have received in response to the letter. Identify the health care spokesperson on their staff. If you have received responses, you will receive 0.5 point on the overall assignment grade.

The four aspects of this assignment should be collated and presented. It will be graded using the following rubric:

Critical Infrastructure and a Cyberattack

Presidential Decision Directive 21 (PDD-21) identifies 16 critical infrastructures. PDD-21 lays out the national policy to maintain secure, functioning and resilient critical infrastructure. Select a critical infrastructure sector from the list below and discuss the impact that a cyberattack could have on that system or service:

Communication Sector (voice communications, digital communications, or navigation)
Energy Sector (electric power grid)
Water and Wastewater Systems Sector (water supply or sewage)
Healthcare and Public Health Sector (hospitals)
Transportation Systems Sector (rail or air)
Financial Services Sector (banking )

It is the third and fourth order effects from the cyberattack on the chosen critical infrastructure that shows the far reaching and devastating effect of a cyberattack. To demonstrate the interconnectedness of critical infrastructure, explain the cascading effects on other critical infrastructure. Then, discuss the measures DHS has taken to ensure resiliency of the selected infrastructure and the measures that need to be implemented in the future.
