Annualized expected returns, variances and co variances.

  1. Log into WRDS (Wharton) database, using the following information:

Userid: sseechar

Pwd: Plza.123

  1. Choose CRSP (Center for the Research of Security Prices) database
  2. Choose North America
  3. Choose Equities
  4. Choose Monthly data files

  1. Download data on monthly returns (choose Holding Period Return variable) for the most recent 5-year period on four companies (or mutual funds, ETFs, etc.) from CRSP database into the Excel file. Choose companies from unrelated industries. Use your common sense here. For example, computer hardware and software industries are closely related, but computer hardware and food industries are not. Make sure that your dates are consistent across all four stocks, i.e. you select returns for the same 5-year period.

You can download similar data from Bloomberg

  1. Using commands in the Excel Functions menu (click on fx button), calculate expected monthly returns on all three stocks (use AVERAGE function), their variances (VAR function), standard deviations (STDEV function), arrange them into variance-covariance matrix.

The more efficient way to calculate the variance-covariance matrix is using cov-matrix.xlam application, posted on BB. You need to download this application onto your computer and then open it within your Excel program. Don’t forget to enable macros.

In this example, Variance-Covariance is a 4 by 4 table. Suppose that it is located in cells (C98:F101), that is rows 98 through 101, columns C through F. On the diagonal of this matrix are variance estimates, on off-diagonal are covariance terms (we will use these addresses later in mmult command).

  1. Now find the correlation coefficient between each pair of companies (CORREL function). Arrange them into the 4 by 4
  • Correlation matrix

  1. Annualize expected returns, variances and covariances. It means you have to multiply monthly expected returns, variances and covariances by 12. We can do this because we assume markets to be efficient at least in a weak form. Market efficiency means that monthly returns are independent of each other; that is the correlation coefficient between returns in one month and returns in any other month is 0. The annual standard deviation is just the square root of the annual variance. The annual correlation coefficient is the same as the monthly correlation coefficient.

You can multiply the entire variance-covariance matrix by 12. Below is the link to the excellent tutorial on matrix manipulations in excel:

http://facweb.cs.depaul.edu/mobasher/classes/csc575/assignments/MatrixOperations-Excel2007.pdf

  1. Report monthly and annual statistics, calculated in (3) — (5). Present annualized variances and covariances in the variance-covariance.

Part 2

  1. In the next four columns specify weights of the four stocks in your portfolio. Remember, that the weight of the forth stock in the portfolio can be expressed as w4 = 1- w1 – w2– w3. Alternatively, you can write a weight constraint into the next column

You can use any set of numbers as a starting point.

  1. In the next three columns enter the formula for the variance, standard deviation and expected return (in that order) of the portfolio of four stocks:

(1)

(2)

(3)

The more efficient way to do calculate the variance or the portfolio and its expected return is to use matrices:

We will use the following matrix form for this equation:

(4)

In equation (4), w denotes 1 by 4 row vector of weights, W stands for 4 by 4 variance-covariance matrix, and w’ is a transpose of w, a 4 by 1 column vector of weights.

  1. To do this in Excel:

(i)       Enter the vector (row of four) weights for the four assets, for example in B109:E109.  You can start from any set of numbers. In the next cell (F109) Enter the weight constraint, i.e. enter the formula:

=SUM(B109:E109).

(ii)     Now use the following command in Excel to perform matrix multiplication to find the variance of your portfolio

=MMULT(MMULT(B109:E109,$C$98:$F$101),TRANSPOSE(B109:E109))

Press simultaneously CTRL-SHIFT and while holding these two keys, also press ENTER. Suppose that the result of your operation is located in cell G109.

  1. Copy everything 10 times (next ten rows).

  1. Use Solver to find the weights of the minimum variance efficient (MVE) portfolio of your four chosen stocks in the first row. To do this, you simply minimize the variance of the portfolio, no constraints on the expected return of the portfolio needed.

Steps:

  1. Go to Data, find Analysis and click on Solver
  2. In Solver window, in “Set Objective”, enter G109 (this is where you have your variance function) and click on Min. Your objective is to minimize the variance of the portfolio.
  3. In “By Changing Cells” enter the range of weights that Solver can change, i.e B109:E109.
  4. Add the constraint on weights: reference cell F109 (sum of all four weights) should be equal to 1.
  5. Click OK.
  6. In the next cell, H109, find the annualized standard deviation of the MVE portfolio.

  1. Calculate the expected return on the MVE portfolio. In matrix form this equation is:

(5)

In (5) E stands for the 1 by 4 row vector of expected returns and w’ is a column vector of weights.

To do this in Excel, in cell I109 write:

=MMULT($B$92:$E$92,TRANSPOSE(B109:E109))

where the first array of cells contains annualized expected returns on individual hedge fund strategies. Done forget to press simultaneously CTRL-SHIFT and while holding these two keys, also press ENTER.

  1. Use Solver to calculate efficient portfolios for each level of expected returns. That is, increase expected returns above the level of E[RMVE] in small increments (for example, the next portfolio’s expected return would be 1% higher than the expected return on the MVE portfolio). This new return enters Solver as your constraint. You need to find a portfolio that has the smallest possible standard deviation and pays your chosen expected return. Mathematically, you solve the following optimization problem:

(6)

subject to:

E[Rp] = A,

where A is your chosen expected return.

You will need to repeat your optimization with Solver 10 more times, each time increasing return by 1%. Don’t use paste and copy at this point.

In Solver, the steps are exactly the same as in Step 10, except that in the “Subject to constraints” window, you now need to enter the return constraint. Click on “Add”. The constraint window will open. In the “Cell Reference”, enter I110 (in our example the expected return on the next portfolio is located in this cell) and choose =. In the “Constraint” enter =I109+0.01. This means that return on your next portfolio should be equal to the return on MVE plus 1%. Click on “OK.”

  1. Use Chart menu in Excel to draw the graph of the efficient frontier: expected return (on Y-axis) versus standard deviation (on X-axis). Use XY plot.

Discuss the ways in which they fit with the crime and the specific demographics associated with the crime.

You are an investigative reporter for a large news network. You are working on a news piece identifying how theories of crime explain specific crimes including the demographics of perpetrators and victims. You are required to make a thirty-minute presentation to your producers to convince them to run your story.

Choose a specific crime from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program at the following:

Research this crime using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Be sure to include the UCR and other crime reports in your research

Based on your research, develop a presentation that addresses the following:

  • Define the crime. Include both the legal definition and others as necessary.
  • Summarize demographics of the crime for both the perpetrators and the victim. Be sure to cover the following:
    • Gender
    • Ethnicity
    • Socioeconomic characteristics
    • Other relevant diversity issues
  • Choose two theories of the causes of crime that have been discussed and analyzed so far in the course; apply those theories to the selected crime. Be sure to cover the following:
    • Explain the type of each theory in detail.
    • Discuss the development of each theory and the main theorists associated with them.
    • Compare and contrast the two theories of crime selected. Discuss the ways in which they fit with the crime and the specific demographics associated with the crime.
  • Based on your research, develop your own hypothesis of the cause of this crime. Using the theories that you have chosen, you can develop your own “combination” theory.
  • Give valid reasons and scholarly, peer-reviewed sources in support of your theory.

You are allowed to present your theory in first person; however, be careful not to abuse this privilege.

Your presentation should include the following:

  • A title slide and a reference slide (these will not count towards the total number of slides).
  • At least five sentences of speaker notes for each section to clarify anything not included in the slides. (As this is a presentation the slides should cover the main points and the details should be covered in the speaker’s notes.) The speaker notes should be properly referenced.

Develop a 10–15-slide presentation in PowerPoint format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.ppt.

The submission requires APA format which requires every source used to be listed in the references and cited where used in the paper.

Students must answer three case study questions

In addition students must use further research from credible sources in these case answers (see Research and APA Information topic in the Case Studies module content). This research must come from at least three credible sources and be used to update the situation for the company in the case questions selected. These additional resources may include articles/news on the company, compare points to other companies (ideally in the same industry), best practices from industry reports, additional lesson concepts (i.e. research beyond textbook reading on the concepts), etc.

The submission requires APA format which requires every source used to be listed in the references and cited where used in the paper. Students should include an introductory and concluding paragraph for their overall case studies. Students must include in the concluding paragraph further recommendations they might offer the company relative to the case questions/answers to better apply the lesson concepts for further improvements.. Students may not use more than five pages for this submission (including a cover page and reference list, so no abstract is required). Spelling, grammar, punctuation, 1 in. margins, 1.5-2 line spacing, sections/headings (i.e. intro., Q1, 2 & 3, concl., etc.), figure/table format, page number, etc. expected submission

Class Rules:

Arrival to class must be prompt. Late comers are highly discouraged. I will try my best to make it on time and I expect it from others.

Attendance policy – While attendance is not mandatory, you are expected to attend class. That is where the primary teaching will occur. Office hours are for additional help not for teaching the material because you were not in class. Here are my expectations regarding attendance:
I expect students to attend class and if you will not attend, it is your responsibility to get the notes and power points from a classmate. So make arrangements prior to your absence. I do not post notes on Blackboard.
If homework is due, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to have your homework turned in before-hand.
If you are ill, I expect an email to let me know of your absence. If I don’t get an email before class, I will not accept your homework after the due date. Homework is due on the subsequent class or it will not be accepted.
On exam and quiz dates, do not miss class. I do not have make-ups for quizzes or exams. If you have extreme circumstances (that I consider extreme), then come see me during office hours and I will determine the validity of the excuse. So please review the dates and make sure that you attend class on those days.
If you miss the first week of class, you will be severely behind and as such you should consider dropping the course. We begin lectures, materials and assignments on the first day. If you are adding the course after the first day of class, you must attend class during the first week. So please make every effort to attend even if you have not completed registration.

There will be an environment of efficient communication by listening to each other. This implies that one person talks at a time. In addition, no cells or pagers must be on. Anyone caught with a cell phone ringing or pager on will lose 5 points from their final grade for each time.

Because of the increased disruption by students surfing the net and working on assignments from other classes, laptops, notebooks, i-pads or any electronic devices are not allowed on/out during class. Unless you have a disability that precludes your ability to take notes with old fashion pen/paper, don’t ask to use it.

Quizzes and Tests are open notes and closed book. Students will be given a copy of the factor tables for the exam. Make sure you have your own calculators that are not web-enabled. There is no sharing during an exam. In addition, you will be asked to turn in your cell phones to the professor at the beginning of the exam. They will be returned when you turn in your exam. No make-up test will be given. Exams will be given on a Tuesday or Thursday evening from 5:00 pm – 7:00pm or 6:30pm – 8:30 pm throughout the semester. Please note these on the syllabus and be prepared to take the exams on those days. Rooms to be announced in class.

Homework problems are assigned and you are to turn them in on-time. On-time is considered at the beginning of class. Where required the assignment will need to be done in Excel. No late assignments will be accepted at all. An assignment is considered late at the end of class.

There is no curving in this class so don’t ask. I provide other opportunities for improving your grades

Cheating and/or plagiarism will not be tolerated. If you are caught on a quiz, exam or homework, you will fail that quiz, exam or homework, and be asked not to return to my class. I will not discuss alternatives. Academic Integrity and Honor Code will be strictly observed and enforced !!!

Religious Holidays – The University has a policy on “Holy Day” observances due to the vastly increased different religions among the student population.  The policy states that a student has the option of observing a religious holy day under certain circumstances:
You will be allowed three absences (days) for religious observances per semester.
You MUST inform the professor of the days chosen in the first week of class in WRITING.
Failure to notify the professor during the required time will lead to an unexcused absence and thus not be allowed to make up the work.
Travel days are NOT included.
Make-Up work will be assigned after you return to class.
For more information you can refer to the University Bulletin – http://www.miami.edu/index.php/academicbulletin/GeneralUniversityInformation/undergraduate_academic_procedures_and_information/course_information/
Research information- A key to successful research is to use reliable, high-quality information sources. While high quality information can be found on the open Web, it can be hard to pick out from the vast amounts of unreliable and unsourced material that also exist there. Using the library is the best way to ensure you are using the best research sources. The University of Miami Libraries have millions books, articles from scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers as well as videos, reference materials and a wide range of other materials all collected, categorized and organized for your convenience, much of it available online.

The best place to begin your research is at the engineering research guide at libguides.miami.edu/engineering. The research guide provides direct links to Knovel, the premier online engineering reference resource; the ASTM digital library including a full collection of their standards; and Compendex and Inspec, top indexes to engineering journal articles and conference proceedings. You can also visit the library homepage, library.miami.edu. There you can use Articles+ as a multi-purpose first stop search for any topic, find books and other material in the library catalog, or explore the library’s other services including citation managers to organize your research, digital media production programs and equipment, and tutorials for foreign languages and software packages.

Industrial Engineering students will also find the business research guide at http://libguides.miami.edu/business to be useful. It contains links to the library’s databases of scholarly business research, trade journals, newspapers and business and industry reports. Topics covered include industrial safety regulations, process optimization and ergonomics.

Along with the website, the library’s most useful resources are the librarians who are there to help you find the information you need for your work by pointing you to the most appropriate resources and showing you the best search techniques. Each of the librarians in the Education and Outreach department specializes in different subject areas. The subject librarian for engineering is Bill Jacobs who can be reached at billjac@miami.edu. You can also find help at the Reference Desk just inside the Richter Library turnstiles and the Ask-a-Librarian e-mail and IM services on the library website.

Use of Wikipedia: Wikipedia is not a valid source for several reasons. First, it is an encyclopedia—a summary of analysis of original work. That synthesis of ideas is your role. Also, because it is publicly edited and on the open Web, it has other flaws:
In controversial areas it commonly falls prey to faddishness or gets whittled down to vague generalities by factions of editors cutting what they find objectionable.
The references at the bottom of Wikipedia articles can point to more reliable information, but they are chosen for public accessibility above quality and you have access to much more through the library’s subscriptions paid for by your tuition.
There is nobody responsible for checking to see if those articles say what the Wikipedia-editor says they say, so they frequently don’t.
Grading Policy:

Test 1 25%
Test 2 25%
Test 3 25%
Quizzes 10%
Homework Assignments 10%
Financial Crisis Assignment 5%
Grading Scale: Yes this is the scale and yes, I do not curve.

A – 90 and above
B – 80 – 89.99
C – 70 – 79.99
D – 60 – 69.99
F – anything below a 60. Yes I have failed students.

Homework Assignments – Throughout the semester Problems and assignments will be given with expected due dates.

Financial Crisis Assignment: In 2008, the world financial system was on the brink of failure and the US Government made a series of decisions to prevent world “meltdown” of the financial systems. The justification was “Too Big to Fail”. An HBO movie has come out called “Too Big to Fail”. In 2010 the movie “Inside Job” came out and it is a documentary of the financial crisis in the United States. I would like you to watch both films and do some research on the basis of these films.

After that, you need to write a 5 to 7 page paper that is typed, single space with 1 inch margins, Times-Roman 12pt font. The page count does not include a cover page or reference page. In the paper you need to address the following items:

You need to provide a summary of what the “Financial Crisis” was in the United States.
Compare the two films and discuss which one portrays a more accurate representation of the real events. Please refer to research that you found on the events to support this. You may find that both are accurate in a different area. That is ok.
Determine if legislation has been passed to overhaul the lending and banking system as a response to this crisis. Please provide an overview/ explanation of this legislation.
Pick three items that were part of the crisis and/or legislation and explain how it impacts, good or bad in your opinion, the profession of Industrial Engineering or businesses that Industrial Engineers will be employed in.
Finally, what ethical implications were involved in this financial crisis and how does it relate to the Code of Ethics for Industrial Engineers?

I expect you to watch both films, do research and to go to the actual legislation and read it. You need to do research and provide references in your paper. The paper should be between 5 to 7 pages typed not including a cover page or reference page. In addition, in text citations and appropriate referencing is required in addition to a well written paper in English.

Critical Thinking

Impact of ISO Regulations on Stakeholders

Q1) Analyze how ISO 14001 and AA1000 regulations protect stakeholders. Do these regulations and reports have an impact on how investors see the long-term viability of an organization or company in which they plan to invest?

What are examples of this in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where this reporting occurs? In the paper, explain how these regulations impact future investors, local stakeholders, and the organization’s or company’s sustainability.

Use University academic writing standards and APA style guidelines, citing references as appropriate.

It is strongly encouraged that you submit all assignments to the Turnitin Originality Check prior to submitting them.

Q2)  Describe the business value created by using the disciplines of project management and program management. How can project and program management increase profits and/or decrease costs?
