Assignment – Period Book Review

The objective of this exercise is to expand your knowledge of a particular historical period through additional reading in that era. It is also the purpose to provide you with a richer encounter with history than can be provided by a survey textbook. You may select a book which covers some aspect of the subject matter covered in this course. The recommended readings provided at the end of each chapter in your text is a good place to start. However, your instructor must approve the book in advance of your taking on the assignment. In this respect, your instructor will be happy to help you select a work that may interest you.

The book may cover an historical event, a prominent historical figure, and institution, or a historical period. Works of fiction generally are not suitable to the objective unless they are included in a study of a particular author or a genre of writing. In that case, several works and the author’s biography would be appropriate. In all cases, please feel free to consult with your instructor at any phase of this assignment.

Students will read and write a review of a text from one of the periods that we have covered to date (or by the time that this assignment is due). This leaves any text that was written from 1300 to 1650, open to you. The books can be in hard copy or online versions.

When you have selected a particular book, you should post the title of your book to the bulletin board discussion forum, to let others know which one you have selected. Students cannot chose the same text as someone else, due to the small class numbers, students should not have any difficulty selecting a unique text.

After the book has been approved, you will critically read the work, reading not only for information but also for how the book was written, the sources of the author’s information, biases, areas of neglect or emphasis, the author’s approach/point of view, etc. After the critical reading, you will write an analysis or review of the work using the guidelines below. Your grade will be determined by how well you complied with the guidelines.

Guidelines
1. 1200-1500 words in length (approximately four to five typed pages), double spaced.
2. Title Set. This is a cover sheet which is attached to the report but does not count as one of the body pages. It should contain the following: the author, title, publisher, publication date and the total number of pages. This is centered as the title of the report, followed by your name, course name, and date approximately ten spaces below the title.
3. A short summary, no more than a page, of the main points of the work.
4. A section discussing the author’s methodology. This can include the author’s perspective, use of sources, biases, etc. You may use brief quotes to illustrate a point. The quote should be worked into the sentence or paragraph, and it should be cited using parenthetical notation. You may need to consult with me on methodology.
5. A somewhat lengthy section containing your personal comments or reflection on the work, as well as what you learned from reading and writing the review: how does the work fit with our study of this period?
6. The review should be written without errors in spelling or grammar, and with few errors of syntax.
7. A correlation between what is being discussed in the work and other things that were going on in European history or during modern times.

Write an argument essay of approximately 600 words on one of the articles we read for the applied ethics module. 600 words is around 2 double-spaced pages in Times New Roman font. Write this paper as though you were going to publish it in a scholarly journal. You should think of you audience as being an educated adult who has never taken a class on ethics. Your essay should include proper in-text citations in APA format for all quotations and close paraphrases of other scholars’ work. You must also include a bibliography giving the details of all the sources you cited in text. This bibliography should also be in APA format. Submit this essay here on CANVAS in one of the following file formats: .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .pdf. If you do not have Microsoft word, your word processing software will most likely be able to convert your file to one of the file formats listed.

Step One: Review How to write a short argument essayPreview the documentView in a new window and review Argument Essay Grading RubricPreview the documentView in a new window. It is vital that you read these documents and make sure your essay conforms to the recommendations made.

Step Two: Choose one of the articles from the following list to write on. Page numbers are from your Minch & Weigel Text.

John Rawls- “Principles of Justice” pp.238-243

Robert Nozick- “Distributive Justice” pp. 244-252

Peter Singer- “Famine, Affluence, and Morality” pp. 248-252

Jonathan Safran Foer- “Eating Animals” pp. 452- 460

Jerome M. Segal – “Two Ways of Thinking About Money” pp. 444-451
Aldo Leopold- “The Land Ethic” pp. 496-500
Step Three: Write the introductory paragraph of your essay introducing the topic and stating your thesis. Your thesis will be that the author of the article you chose is mistaken in some regard.

Step Four: The first part of the body of your essay should explain the target articles thesis and how it is argued for. You may also use the lecture slides. Do not use any outside sources. In explaining the argument it is a good idea create an argument outline. This section of the paper should take at least 3 or 4 paragraphs. One paragraph might outline the argument. If you have space, use examples.

Step Five: The second part of your essay either criticizes the target article. You do not have space for more than one criticism. Create your own original example of how this criticism applies. This should be doable in two or three paragraphs.

Step Six: Write a conclusion paragraph. This paragraph should be short. It should reiterate your thesis and very briefly remind the reader of why they should accept the thesis.

Step Seven: Create a bibliography in APA format. This guidePreview the documentView in a new window and this guidePreview the documentView in a new window will help you with the formatting.

Determine which Department consumes the most general government resources (support your selection).

Part 1 – Budget analysis
1. In your paper, provide answers to the following questions using visual as well as text. Provide the discussion and analysis as if you were presenting a report to Council:
a. What major concerns are addressed in the budget document?
b. What is the total County budget? Breakout the budget for the enterprise funds versus the general fund.
c. What sources of revenue are received by the County overall?

2. Look at the General fund budget overall. Compare revenues and expenditures budgeted.
a. Determine which Department consumes the most general government resources (support your selection). For that department, answer these questions:
i. What are the department’s goals and purpose? How do those match with what you would think the citizens expect?
ii. Are there revenues specific to the department?
iii. What are the budgeted expenditures? Provide examples from the budget.
iv. If a 15% decrease is to be made for this department you have chosen where would you cut the budget? Explain why and what you think the overall effect of this decrease would be on the department.
v. Anything else you think is significant about this department’s budget?

Part 2 – CAFR analysis
1. Read the Transmittal Letter, MD&A and notes. For additional reference, look for official reports or financial information such as reports to Council about the CAFR.
2. Provide an analysis of the CAFR using text and graphics as if you were presenting your analysis to someone in order to inform them about CAFRs in general and this city in particular.
3. Include in your analysis the answers to the following questions. Be sure to also conform to the guidelines for the paper overall presented in the first section of these instructions and support your opinions with references or examples.
a. Has the County received an award for the CAFR? If so, you don’t need to spend time analyzing conformity with GASB 34 requirements.
b. What detail is available in the notes to the statements that would be useful to a particular type of reader (citizen, potential commercial operation, etc.).
c. What is the financial situation for this government? Support your comments with examples from the CAFR. Is there sufficient information to determine the financial health of the government?
d. Compare the information provided in the CAFR and the budget for this city including a review of the budget vs. actual statements in the CAFR.
e. What do you think was especially helpful or not in the CAFR overall including the MD&A and statistical sections? Support your responses with examples.
Tell the reader what you will cover and why it is interesting; give the reader context (for instance, say something about the city such as its location, weather, what it’s known for, etc..

“The traditional budget is a rigid tool and should therefore be discarded in practice”. Should the traditional budgetary model be abandoned as suggested above? Critically evaluate this claim in the li

The assignment is research based debate: answer not found in one source or textbook.
Word count should reflect the usual +/- 10%
Avoid straightforward advantages and disadvantages: that will be deemed too ‘descriptive’.
Be analytical and critical.
Think about what is ‘traditional budgeting’: not clearly defined but may include incremental budgeting, static budget comparisons with actual results: wrong?
Introduce the role of flexible budgeting and other more progressive budgeting like ABB. ZBB and Kaizen budget but be critical as you make the propositions.
The can be various things you may add in between- no fixed answer but a clear structure is very important as it will tell a paint picture.
Evaluate the reasons leading to the extended use of the budget through quarterly reporting etc.
Any more sustainable basis for budgeting and evaluate whether the budget should be discarded or not.
This is ONLY a GUIDE and by no means exhaustive or an answer to the essay.

Describe the company, project, resources and some of the challenges behind the project in the opening presentation & summary to familiarize the “sponsor” with what you are going to present.

Project:  This is an introduction to some of the various components of planning a project. You will select one project from the list below, and complete the deliverables for that project.

Deliverables:

Paper – brief project write up to include all noted deliverables below, and any supplementary documentation needed to ensure each plan component is complete and executable. (8-12 page, times, douple space, APA style)

Presentation – Power Point or Prezi presentation about your project and key points from the required deliverables. Supporting handouts, white papers, charts and spreadsheets necessary to support any aspect of the project plan can also be incorporated.

Deliverables:

  • Scope plan and WBS (to 3rd level)
  • Communications plan
  • H/R Plan
  • Stakeholder Matrix
  • Names, attitude, BRD traceability, position, influence

Assignment notes:

  • This assignment is from the standpoint of you being hired as a project manager. You are to select a project from the list of choices. You are to craft portions of a project plan that could be used to carry out and execute the project you selected.  All 10 PM Knowledge areas may need to be reviewed or referenced, but the project is just covering 4 of the 10 Knowledge areas (scope, Communications, H/R, and Stakeholders). Those areas relate to the subjects of the course.
  • Describe the company, project, resources and some of the challenges behind the project in the opening presentation & summary to familiarize the “sponsor” with what you are going to present.
  • You may want to visit a business (restaurant, distribution center, commercial business, etc..) to get some ideas and context for your project.
  • Photos, graphs, and other supporting material may be used as appropriate or required
  • Comparisons to competitors, or similar projects is encouraged as long as it supports the point you are trying to make or emphasize
  • Tie-in as much course content as you are able {i.e., stuff from the course books, PMBOK:  A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge) This will certainly be a focal point for grading, so clear and accurate delivery is critical.

Project Choices:

  1. Kitchen Remodel (commercial)
  2. Food Truck for “XYZ” restaurant
  3. Commercial space build-out for “XYZ” business
  4. Solar Panel Install (commercial)

Describe, with the aid of a properly labeled Supply and Demand curve, what the reduction in cocoa beans will mean to the price of candy bars.

Most of these questions are designed to test you on more than one economic concept, so a few sentences will not earn you many points. Since you are being given the opportunity to prepare in advance, these questions will be graded mostly on an all-ornothing basis – very little partial credit will be awarded. An answer that was correct on a previous test may not receive full credit on the final, as a result. Make sure to go through and check that you have answered all parts of the question thoroughly.
From the podcasts, “Changing Picture of Poverty: Hard Work is Just ‘Not Enough’”& “One Family’s Story Shows How the Cycle of Poverty is Hard to Break”: Explain why Economic Growth may not advance the standard of living for all citizens. What roadblocks prevent this? Why do developed countries, like the US, have difficulty addressing these issues? What role does society (the CFD as a whole) have in helping to alleviate these barriers?
From Adam Smith’s “Wealth of Nations”: In describing the market place, Smith observes that: “When the quantity of any commodity which is brought to market falls short of the effectual demand, all those who are willing to pay the whole… will be willing to give more. A competition will immediately begin among them, and the market price will rise.” Describe how prices, when allowed to be altered, will adjust to shortages (as Smith describes) or surpluses. Your explanation should include a graph of Supply and Demand. At what point would Smith argue that the “competition” would subside? Explain.
From the article, “The World’s Biggest Chocolate-Maker Says We’re Running Out of Chocolate”: Describe, with the aid of a properly labeled Supply and Demand curve, what the reduction in cocoa beans will mean to the price of candy bars. Identify all important outcomes and shifting factors. What do we expect to happen to production of candy bars, and their price, based on your graph? How does the article’s argument for substituting ingredients lead to a different price outcome? Support this explanation with a second, properly labeled Supply and Demand curve.
From the article, “One Way to Fix the Corporate Tax: Repeal It” and “Cutting the Corporate Tax Would Make Other Problems Grow”: What assumptions are these articles making, that leads to different suggestions on how to adjust the Corporate Tax rate? Is there such thing as a correct tax rate? Describe the three types of Tax Proportions. Describe the benefits and drawbacks to taxing Corporations (which are really just upper-income individuals) more?
From the article “Debunking the Myth of the Job-Stealing Immigrant”: In the presence of elevated unemployment rates and public debates on aid availability to undocumented citizens, the public perception is that citizens would benefit from protecting domestic borders. Describe the fallacy in this argument. Another argument involving the well-being of the domestic economy is that by outsourcing jobs (or allowing foreign-born individuals to be educated in the United States) that jobs that could have been in the U.S. are moved to other countries. Do you agree with this assessment? What are the outcomes of Protectionism laws that restrict jobs moving to other countries?
From the article, “What Scented Candles Say to an Economist”: Describe how increased Gross Domestic Product spurs advancement in Standard of Living? What incentives are created that promote individuals and business to expand innovation and research & development? How does this incentive change when Gross Domestic Product is not steadily increasing? Your explanation should include a definition of GDP.
Define Economics and all of its key terms.
From the article, “Netflix’s Weak Subscriber Additions at Odds with Lofty Valuation”: Why do companies choose to become publicly traded? What are the benefits and drawbacks to this decision? If a company no longer makes money from its stock after an IPO, why might they still be concerned with trying to control the stock price? What ramifications do large swings in the stock price have on the company?
Economist Milton Friedman once said: “I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of office.” Describe the role of the Household in an economic system. In terms of the Circular Flow Diagram, what do you believe that Friedman meant by this statement? How does the participation and knowledge of the population augment the influence of the other entities in an economy? You should use a properly labeled Circular Flow Diagram to support your explanation.
From the articles, “How Machines Destroy (and Create!) Jobs, in 4 Graphs” and “Will Your Job Be Done By Machines: Does all job creation equally influence an economy? Explain. How might the creation of different job types result in the Unemployment Rate being an inadequate estimate of the labor market and labor conditions? U.S. Net job creation has averaged over 250,000 jobs per month during the last year. Describe how this has resulted in the Unemployment Rate decreasing in some months, increasing in some months, and experiencing no change in some months. Make sure to define any concepts from the course that you use in your explanation. ** NET job creation already accounts for any lost jobs during that month, so a positive Net job creation means that more employment opportunities are available.
Describe Fiscal Policy and Monetary Policy; include who has authority to establish each, along with the “levers” that make up each. What are the inherent problems and benefits of each? Can the two be used together to solve efficiency issues in the economy? Describe how that relationship would look. What aspects would allow both to work with the most potential?
From the article, “A Burger Joint Pays $15 An Hour. And Yes, It’s Making Money”: Why might a restaurant (such as the one in the article) benefit from paying its workers $15 an hour, while others may not? What must be true of each company? Explain with the aid of a properly labeled Supply and Demand curve for each company. What are the other outcomes of the self-imposed Minimum Wage, according to the article? Does the fact that this restaurant is profitable support the argument that all Minimum Wages should be raised? Explain.
From the article, “Faith in an Unregulated Free Market? Don’t Fall for It”: Describe the two primary types of government structures? What are the benefits and drawbacks to each? How are the drawbacks from each structure benefits of the other? Is it possible to have an operational structure that is pure Capitalist or pure Socialist, meaning that they operate exactly the way each is defined? Explain.
From the article, “What People Mean When They Say, ‘Audit the Fed’”: What is Monetary Policy? Why is it designed to be out of the reach of political control? What are the benefits and drawbacks to this? What is the Dual Mandate? How do the two components of the Dual Mandate tend to be contradictory to each other (tend to move in opposite directions)? In what ways does this make government isolation a greater benefit, and greater drawback? Explain.
From the article, “Brace Yourself: The Presidential Election is Going to be All about Anger”: What are the two “levers” that make up Fiscal Policy? Is each fully at the discretion of the government, or are there boundaries on how they establish this policy each year? Economists describe Growth Policy and Stabilization Policy as two significant theories that drive policy making. What is each? What are the benefits and drawbacks of each? When is each ideally used?

Identify and describe at least 5 metrics that you would use to assess the success of any logistics plan involving you as a manufacturer and an internationally based mass merchandiser.

he rough draft must be a completed paper, with APA formatting, all 7 sections complete (using Roman numerals of each section per the outline), references, and good grammar.

You were recently hired as the VP of Logistics for the ABC Manufacturing Company. This is a new position. During the lengthy interview process, the CEO shared her strategic plans for worldwide growth in the company’s consumer sales. Previously, sales had been confined to domestic sales only. As a result of little staff logistics expertise, the company had kept the traditional logistics model of shipping all finished products from its warehouse and factory location on the East Coast of the United States, even though there was a growing market on the West Coast that competition was serving from a West Coast warehouse. However, the CEO pointed out that despite its national popularity from a feature and quality perspective, it seemed to penetrate poorly on the West Coast because of her need to charge higher prices as the result of higher shipping costs.

The marketing manager tried to mitigate this competitive disadvantage by freight equalization so that end customers would pay the same amount of shipping costs as West Coast competition charged, regardless of where they were located. This met with some insignificant success because timeliness of delivery was another important issue. Therefore, the CEO had asked you, as your first assignment, to write a white paper to address the following specific points. She remembered that you had quite a bit of experience addressing some or all of these issues during your career. As a stickler for formatting, she has specifically asked you to use the following Roman numeral sections and headings in the paper:

Section I: Introduction (300 words)

In general, what are the qualitative pros and cons for domestic sales of having multiple distribution centers and shipping locations in the United States?

In general, what are qualitative pros and cons of having one or more international distribution centers for international sales, as opposed to shipping directly from a U.S. manufacturing location warehouse?

What are the opportunities and challenges of being a supplier to an internationally based mass merchandiser?

Section II: Decision-Making Criteria (500–750 words)

The CEO is considering either expanding the warehouse next to the East Coast manufacturing plant; or for the same total construction and operating costs, building a West Coast distribution center; or for the same total construction and operating costs, building a combination manufacturing and warehouse location on the West Coast. As a completely separate issue, she is also considering opening a distribution center overseas, to serve the fast-growing warm weather markets of France and Spain.

Given the following general information, what are at least 10 criteria that must be considered when locating a new or expanded shipping warehouse domestically? Internationally?

The products are primarily medium- and large-size insulated coolers, like you might use for a picnic or trip to the beach. As a result, no matter what mode of shipping is used, transportation firms charge by space, or cubic feet, rather than weight, which is the more normal method.

The coolers are made of 3 components, which are all produced by suppliers solely on the East Coast.

The market is very competitive with generally stable or decreasing marketplace prices because of this competition.

In states and countries that are warm year-round, sales are pretty steady; in countries and states that have seasons, 90% of sales occur in the May–August period.

The raw materials to make this product are bulky, and inbound shipping from the East Coast suppliers currently represents 20% of total raw material costs.

Domestic demand is expected to increase 5% annually; international demand is expected to increase 15% annually.

Right now, to keep West Coast customers happy, the CEO says that they only charge those customers the local freight cost of shipping, which is $200 for anything up to half a truckload.

The current exchange rate is 1 euro = $1.50.

Section III: Metrics to Assess Success (300–400 words)

Identify and describe at least 5 metrics that you would use to assess the success of any logistics plan involving you as a manufacturer and an internationally based mass merchandiser.

Why did you pick these?

Section IV: Quantitative Factors (Excel Spreadsheet)

What is your quantitatively based recommendation based on the data in section II and below as to whether you should open a West Coast distribution center to address West Coast customers, just add on to the existing East Coast factory and warehouse, or build a combination West Coast manufacturing location and warehouse?

Use this template to show your numeric calculations. Without calculations shown for how you reached your conclusion, section IV will earn 0 points. REMEMBER: Decisions like this are based on a comparison of option A versus current methods, or option B versus current methods.

The products are primarily medium- and large-size insulated coolers, like you might use for a picnic or trip to the beach. Each cooler occupies 2 cubic feet of trailer truck space; trailers are 10 x 10 x 40’ long and cost $1,000 to ship from the East Coast to the West Coast.

The coolers are made of 3 components: 1 lb of raw material A, 1/4 lb of raw material B, and 1 gallon of material C, weighing 10 lbs. Based on this information, the added freight cost to get raw materials to a West Coast manufacturing location would be $0.20, $0.20, and $0.60 per finished-good unit, respectively.

The mass merchandiser location on the West Coast will be purchasing 10,000 units per week, but in lots of only 1,000 at a time because of their retail store space constraints.

The market is very competitive, with generally stable or decreasing marketplace prices.

In countries that are warm year-round, sales are pretty steady; in southern countries and states or those that have seasons, 90% of sales occur in the May–August period.

The raw materials to make this product are bulky, and inbound shipping from the suppliers to the manufacturing plant represents 20% of total raw material costs. These raw materials are supplied in the United States from the East Coast; they are not available elsewhere.

Domestic demand is expected to increase 5% annually; international demand is expected to increase 15% annually in France and Spain, but only 2% in Northern European countries.

In the past, to keep West Coast customers happy, the CEO agreed to freight equalize customer shipping charges to be competitive with West Coast competition. She says that they only charge those customers the local freight cost of shipping, which is $200 per delivery for anything up to half-truckload quantities.

Section V: nonquantitative Factors (400–500 words)

Identify at least 5 subjective, nonquantitative factors to also consider in the section IV recommendation.

Section VI: Conclusion (200–300 words)

What are the 3–5 most important points that you want the CEO to understand about this entire decision-making process?
