Annotated Bibliography: The purpose of doing an annotated bibliography is to allow you to explore, as well as organize, the data for your research paper. Another facet of this project is to introduce you to the MLA style of documentation. What constitutes a source? Any article that is reputable or credible. Avoid sources written for the general public, then, as these tend to be less reliable

Persuasive writing utilizes logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate than another idea.

The Persuasive Essay

You are going to write an essay in which you take a position, for or against, a specific topic. This type of writing hopes to convince its readers to believe or do something.

Persuasive writing utilizes logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate than another idea. It attempts to persuade a reader to adopt a certain point of view, or to take a particular action. The argument must always use sound reasoning and solid evidence by stating facts, giving logical reasons, using examples, and/or quoting experts.

Follow these steps:

1) Choose your position; decide which side of an issue or problem you are on. Identify the solution you will offer. Know the purpose of the paper.

2) Analyze your audience. Decide if they are apt to agree, disagree, or stand neutral.

3) Research your topic to find specific and convincing evidence. Often it is necessary to go beyond your own knowledge and experience. Find out what the experts believe and say. (You should start your research with the SIRS database on Panolas library page.)

The final, polished paper should be in proper MLA format, 1000 words minimum, double-spaced, standard font with one inch margins. Cite your sources, at least 3, on the Works Cited page at the end.

Please bring a draft of this paper to class on Wednesday, November 9th for Peer Review Workshop. The final essay is due at the end of class on Wednesday, November 9th.

Business Ethics

Instruction & Requirements:
Two part question:

1. Has an individuals view or conception of ethics change as they grow older? If yes, is there a specific moment that may triggered the change (an experience(s), reading(s), discussion(s) with colleague(s) for example)? How can ethics be applied in your professional and/or personal life?

2. Business Codes of Ethics: Much Ado About Nothing, or the Real Deal

Scenario:

Morgan Stanley: Code of Ethics and Business Conduct, and Starbucks Code of Behavior discuss the approaches and provisions these two companies have utilized in their attempts to establish credible ethical environments. There seems to be a divergence of opinion on the value or lack thereof of a business code of ethics. Some have argued that business codes of ethics have little value or utility and are merely for public show and consumption. According to these proponents, corporations merely pay lip service to their codes of ethics. On the other hand, it has been argued that business codes of ethics are an essential and vital part of the ethical fabric of corporations.

Using the aforementioned articles (links provided) as a starting point, what is your perspective on the value or lack thereof of a business code of ethics? Do you think such a code is merely for public show and consumption? Do you think a corporation simply pays lip service to its code of ethics? Why do you feel this way?

Is the use of standardized tests improving Education in America

To argue effectively, you must recognize there is at least one other side to any argument.Be sure you have a strong thesis. A thesis statement is different than a topic sentence, in that it must be arguable. So, “I’m going to write about social media” is a topic, but “Social media can be a valuable tool for understanding the world” is an arguable thesis.Because each of you will be writing arguments of your own choosing, it is up to you to find the type of argument that will most closely match your essay. Different kinds of arguments: arguments of fact, arguments of definition, evaluations, and causal arguments. The paper should be about how standardized tests DO NOT improve the Education in America. I am attaching a Pro/Con sheet on this subject matter that should only be used as reference and guidance on some of the reasons why it does not improve.Needs to be 12font, double spaced, Times Roman
