“Elements of a Crime and Jurisdiction” Please respond to the following:

The text identifies three principal components that jointly comprise the cash conversion cycle.  The cash conversion cycle is defined as the average length of time a dollar is tied up in current assets, and it is determined by the interaction between the production cycle(also called Days of Sales in Inventory), receivables collection period (also called Number of Days of Credit, Collection cycle, or Days of Sales Outstanding), and the accounts payable cycle (also called Days of Payable Outstanding).  Ideally, a company wants to minimize the cash conversion cycle as much as possible.  In some circumstances, a firm has a comparative advantage in working capital management because of the nature of its business.  We will look at the cash conversion cycles of companies and their implications.

In your initial response to the topic you have to answer all 6 questions.

You are expected to make your own contribution in a main topic as well as respond with value added comments to at least two of your classmates as well as to your instructor.

 

1. Go to http://finance.yahoo.com and get a quote for one company of your choice. On the left column, scroll down and select “Income Statement.”  Write down the annual sales, cost of goods sold, and depreciation expense for the most recent year. For some companies depreciation expense can be found in Cash Flow statement.
2. Select the firm’s Balance Sheet. Write down the balances shown for the firm’s inventories, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
3. Using the information from parts a and b, calculate its inventory turnover, accounts receivable turnover, and accounts payable turnover. You should show your work!

Genesis Energy’s newly established operations management team decided to seek outside assistance in developing a long-term operating plan that also addresses the financial issues identified. A major consideration for Genesis Energy is assessing those short-term and long-term economic factors, which will greatly enhance the company’s ability to successfully transition to a viable international business. Grasping and correctly prioritizing these economic factors, supply and demand, interest rates, inflation, unemployment, and exchange rates are pivotal, thereby requiring expert guidance. Therefore, their first major decision was to hire a respected strategy-consulting firm, Sensible Essentials.

After meeting with the client team, Sensible Essentials concluded that the operations management team would significantly benefit from a more in-depth understanding of the financial environment at Genesis Energy. This understanding needed to encompass not only sales, costs, and profitability forecast under the new strategic plan, but also the way expansion would highlight the need to manage working capital and cash flow in order to try to minimize the need for external financing.

As the lead consultant for Sensible Essentials, do the following:

• Describe and evaluate the financial environment at Genesis Energy by using ratio analysis of the company.
• Choose one ratio from each of the five categories listed in the table on page 103 of your textbook, Brigham and Ehrhardt, and do a 3-year ratio trend analysis (See attached Excel spreadsheet.  Only need to calculate the Market Value ratio). Compare these results to the industry averages. What do the results tell you?
• Name three specific options that are available to Genesis Energy for obtaining needed capital.
• Identify and explain two ways Genesis Energy can improve its strategy.
• Explain what specific macroeconomic factors are likely to affect genesis, i.e., inflation, interest rates, exchange rates etc. Please do a brief country risk assessment and discuss the most likely problems a company like Genesis Energy is likely going to confront when contemplating an international expansion. What would be the least risky avenue for them to get their product/service to the country you have chosen? Which entry mode is the riskiest? Explain.

Traci: Hello, this is Traci Goldeman with Atwood and Allen Consulting. I wanted to take a minute to talk with you about your business. Just so you’re aware, I will be recording our communications over the next several weeks, including this video chat, and placing them in your file for my employees to use as a reference. Having said that, let’s get started. Why don’t you tell me a bit about you and your business?

Bradley: Sure, Traci. My name is Bradley Stonefield and I am opening a limousine service. I’m going to name it Landslide Limousines, and focus on providing first-class transportation. I’m really excited to be working with you as I get everything set up.

Traci: And what location are you looking at?

Bradley: I plan on opening in Austin, Texas.
