You have just been hired as the director of process improvement, a new position, by the VP of Operations for the ABC Manufacturing Company. ABC has been plagued by both internal and external vendor issues; the vendor issues involved repeated late deliveries and poor quality, while internally poor deliveries to customers resulted from both vendor issues, as well as quality and scheduling issues. The CEOs instinct is that the factory could benefit from some wide-reaching process improvements.

The VP of Operations has decided that a far greater focus on vendor quality and internal process improvements must be taken. The VP of Procurement, prior to your coming on board, had already met with the CEOs of ABCs 4 major vendors and alerted them that he expected them to begin turning around their quality performance. About a month prior, he had sent each a letter suggesting several formal overall quality programs that they may embark upon, which included the following:

TQM
Jurans Trilogy
Crosbys program
Demings program
Six Sigma

Part One:

The VP has already received the following responses from each of the main vendors, and he asked you, in coming months, to work with each vendor as they implement their quality initiatives.

Company A had written back that it was planning to implement the Juran program but had not yet begun.
Company B had written back that it was planning to implement the Crosby program but had not yet begun.
Company C had written back that it was planning to implement the Deming program but had not yet begun.
Company D had written back that it was planning to implement a TQM program but had not yet begun.
Company E had written back that it was planning to implement the Six Sigma program but had not yet begun.
While all Companies note plans without and current action, your task is to provide each company clarification of each respective quality initiative in terms of overall concept, methodology, pros, and cons. You are to consolidate your findings into a single report for the VP prior to communicating these to each company individually.

Case Vignette:

Scott, age 37, was referred to you by the pastor of his church who requests that you submit a status report to her after three sessions. He presents as reluctant and uncomfortable. He shares that he feels challenged in his marriage, but very much enjoys his relationship with his two daughters ages three and five.

Scott has recently disclosed to his wife that he has secretly been attending a weekly group therapy meeting for married men who are sexually attracted to other men. He shares with you that Adam, the leader of the group, and a licensed MFT, has pressured me into having sex with him. Scott reports feeling conflicted about this, but states that Adam has told him that the two of them having sex is part of the therapy. Scott wants to stop having sex with Adam, but is unsure about how to do that, since he wants to stay in the group, and wants Adam to like him. He states that he is just not sure what to do about this situation, or what options he has in dealing with Adam.

Scott tells you that he is a High School math teacher and he sometimes struggles because he is attracted to some of the older boys in his classes. He states that sometimes the temptation to touch them is overwhelming. He reports that every day hes distracted by these thoughts and impulses and nothing is making it go away. He is very reluctant to share more information with you than this about his work, and cries while discussing it.

He tells you that his wife is hopeful that you might convince him to participate in conversion therapy in order to overcome his attraction to other men, and return to the strict moral expectations of the religion that she considers a high priority for her family. Scott reports that he feels so conflicted and distressed by his growing attraction to other males that hes willing to try almost anything. He asks you if you can cure him of these desires and help him to be straight again.

Scott reports feeling severely depressed and isolated. He reports that he just wants to be normal and needs help to stop feeling the way he does. He feels overwhelmed and is uncertain that there is any way out of this situation. He states that he simply cant go on like this. He wonders if his family and children are better off without him. He is very agitated and tearful while talking to you and out of the blue states that I have a gun, you know.

In the field of case management, planning is used to identify chronological steps that can be taken to improve a clients current situation.

Creating a Service Plan

In the field of case management, planning is used to identify chronological steps that can be taken to improve a clients current situation. This process, known as creating a service plan, establishes short-term objectives that help clients to meet long-term goals. Short-term objectives should be specific, task-oriented actions that clients can accomplish.

Case managers tend to model objectives around the format developed by Abraham Maslow in 1943. Maslows Hierarchy of Needs involves a set of increasingly complex needs building upon each other, signifying that, without first fulfilling basic needs, more sophisticated ones cannot be met. Beginning with the basic needs of food, water, and shelter, case managers allow clients to fulfill the overwhelming needs that may be affecting their current situation. Once these immediate needs are addressed, case managers can then create short-term objectives revolving around safety, belonging, and esteem. As clients meet these objectives, they come closer to reaching and sustaining their established long-term goals. Many long-term goals created for clients correspond with Maslows highest level of need: self-actualization. Self-actualization describes a persons ability to achieve his or her full potential. Case managers should work collaboratively with their clients to fulfill a long-term goal such as this.

In this weeks Assignment, you develop service plans for your three case studies, which you will continue to use for the remainder of the course.
