Terri Schiavo case
Terri Schiavo case is one of the end-of-life cases that saw an extended legal struggle among various stakeholders. The case lasted for 15 years from 1990 to 2005. The reason for the case was whether to carry out the decision of husband of Teresa Marie to terminate life-supporting machine from her. This discussion delineates on the laws and the stakeholders characterized the case.
End of life laws manifested in this case include presentation of evidence that Terri had indicated or shown interest that her life supporting machine be terminated when in a persistent vegetative state. The law requires enough evidence from the person affected to grant permission to end of life through the living will (Destro, 2009). The living will must be proved beyond any doubt that indeed it is the wish of the person. This is proved by presentation of a will signed by the person with family members as witnesses.
Various stakeholders were involved in the case. One of the stakeholders was Terri’s husband. He supported the termination of life supporting machines to allow his wife to die because he believed that she was not going to recuperate. The parents of Terri Robert and Mary Schindler were other stakeholders that were opposed to the termination of the supporting machines arguing that Terri was conscious (Alter, 2014). The Supreme Court was another stakeholder that provided a ruling on the case. The government was also a stakeholder in the case especially when President Bush intervened in the case by signing a legislation that was to keep Terri alive. The medical practitioners that provided care to Terri were also one of the stakeholders. The disability rights and pro-life movement groups were also stakeholders that opposed the decision to terminate the life-supporting machine from Terri.
