URBAN WILDLIFE OBSERVATION

Overview

Skillful observation, its accurate recording, and its appropriate interpretation (informed by consultation of relevant literature and based on both deductive and inductive reasoning) comprise a major part of the scientific process. In this field project, you will be practicing your observation skills to document the occurrence and behavior of wildlife (here, restricted to animals) in urban settings.  Your observations will include both direct observations of individual animals and observations of animal sign that tells you about a species’ presence and often its behavior in an ecosystem (e.g., tracks, scat, feeding marks, nests, cavities). While we will be making similar observations of wildlife and their signs in various ecological communities during our field trips, this project will be based on observations that you make independently from the class trips. You will also need to consult and cite scientifically relevant resources that you use to identify species and interpret animal sign and behavior.

Observation Criteria

For this project, you will make and record a minimum of three sets of wildlife observations. In total, those observations must meet the following criteria:

  • a minimum of 3 hours of total observation time (no observational set can be less than 30 minutes),
  • a minimum of two different kinds of ecological communities (e.g., maple-basswood forest, floodplain forest, mesic prairie, marsh, urban park, backyard) were observed,
  • a minimum of two different diurnal times (e.g., dawn, dusk, morning, afternoon, dark) were used,
  • a minimum of 10 different animal species or their sign were observed,
  • at least one 15-minute behavioral sequence was observed (must be a single species but can include more than one individual to attain the full 15 minutes), and
  • at least 3 images made by you at the sites that illustrate the presence or behavior of wildlife you observed.

Learning Objectives

  1. Develop wildlife observation skills (learn when, where, and what to learn for).
  2. Accurately record what you observe.
  3. Appropriately interpret what you observe/record.
  4. Properly include visual imagery in scientific results.
