analysis essay: "The Blue Room" play by David Hare

1. Synopsis (20 Points): Give a brief synopsis of the play (150-250 words). A synopsis is not a description or summary. A synopsis tells briefly what happened in the play. It gives the plot (not the story!) in ten or twelve sentences.

2. Theme (20 Points):  What is the theme of the play? (Again, a theme answers the question What is the play about? without referring to the action in the play. It is the unifying subject of the work. ) Give three examples of how the theme arises in the performance.

3. Non-Realistic Elements (10 Points Each): This production, being non-realistic, portrayed characters and/or events in ways that differ from reality. Give three examples of non-realistic elements in the production. For each, describe what you think the point of the element was and explain the effect on the audience.

4. Personal Reaction (10 Points): Did you like the play? Examine your reaction and figure out why you liked or did not like the play. Did your reaction have anything to do with the non-realistic elements? Give examples from the play and be specific.
