Provide enough background and common ground so that the people reading your paper, who do not agree with you, can understand where you are coming from.

The purpose of this paper is to persuade a specific audience to change beliefs, attitudes, or understanding about a particular ideology, event, situation, object, etc… You are to use sound reasoning, avoid logical and emotional fallacies, and present argument(s) in a non-confrontational manner. You should use logical claims and appeals to convince the audience to support your view, or at least, to re-examine their viewpoint. You should mention and refute the opposing views by providing evidence to support your views or beliefs.

Make sure you cite at least five sources in your paper: at least four of the sources should come from a JSCC Library Database, and one additional source can be from the internet. Some of your sources should be supporting your point of view, and some should be supporting your opponents point of view. (CQResearcher or Points of View would be brilliant resources to find sources both for and against your topic.) Only one source should be an encyclopedia type source (Credo Reference). Cite your sources according to the MLA format, and your format must be perfect to get MLA points (10% of your overall grade). When in doubt, look it up!

Your Opposing Sides Argument
This is harder because you have to provide the opposing argument, just as they would. You cant set it up by providing only their weakest reasons because these are the people reading your paper. If they think you dont know where theyre coming from, theyre not interested in what you have to say.
This may be the most important place to use sources because you have to present their side just as they would.
Your Rebuttal
This is your list of reasons why the opposing side is wrong or why theyre looking at things the wrong way.
Yep, sources go great in this section, too.
Conclusion (with significance)
Dont forget to tell your audience what they should have gotten from your paper and why it should matter to them.
