Song: Conditions/Comatose by Blessthefall

Provide an organized outline of your final paper. Give a lot of thought to which aspects of the song are you going to write about. Make sure to discuss musical features using terminology that we have learned this semester. You will need to listen to the song that you have submitted (and had approved) many times and take notes on it. Your paper should be well organized and well written in the end, but begin by taking inventory on what you are hearing in the song. Here are some questions to get you started:

Who wrote the song? If this is a band, is this the “normal” songwriter for this band, or is it the band’s “Ringo”–someone who only contributes a song occasionally? If so, how does this song then differ from those of the band’s “normal” songwriters? If this is a solo artists, was this song written by someone else for the artist? Was it a collaboration? If so, what effect does that have on the outcome? (Remember, this songs cannot be a “cover”)
What is the song’s instrumentation? Listen to the song once just listening to the drums and take notes on it. Then listen to just the bass guitar (or keyboard, or whatever is the bass instrument) and take notes on it. Then the guitars. Then the backup vocals, lead vocals, etc. Take your time really focusing on what is happening in each instrument. You may have to listen to other songs on this or previous albums to get an idea if what you are hearing is normal or not. Are there overdubs? For instance, if the band has one guitar player, are you hearing more than one guitar track? Your paper should just be a list of obvious instrumentation, but if you listen closely enough, you may hear something interesting enough to write about.
Who “produced” the song? Is it there normal producer? Can you find any interviews with this producer that gives you an idea of what this person does to capture a band’s best work? Does this producer have a philosophy on how to prepare or record a band? What artists has this producer worked with before? Are they similar to this artist to this artist, or is this artist an anomaly?
Do you hear any pitch correction? Does that surprise you? Has the artist or producer ever mentioned anything about pitch correction in any interviews?
Has the artists or producer given any interviews on the making of this record?
Has the record been reviewed? It is okay to read reviews–remember, your paper is not a review, it is a research paper that tracks the historical roots of this song, but have you noticed any misconceptions in the reviews, “facts” or observations that do not stand up to scrutiny? Why do you think the reviewer got it wrong? (Your paper will be checked for plagiarism, so if you quote a review, make sure to put it in quotation marks and cite your source–long quotations from other sources will not go toward the required word count)
What “style” is this music supposed to be? Do you hear other stylistic references? Is this a “Rock” band that is performing a “loud pop song?” Is this a pop artist who is referencing an older folk style? Does the song rely heavily on the style of any previous artists?
Who does this artist cite as influences? Who are the influences of those influences?
What is interesting about the structure of the song?
What is the structure and genre of the lyric?
Do you know if this artist writes lyrics or music first? Can you tell if that process has any effect on this particular song?
Is the song unusually long or short for this artist? Why does that appear to be the case?
How much is this artist consciously playing with tradition? How much is the artist unconsciously relying on tradition? Where is the tradition making itself heard: words, chords, drum grooves, guitar riffs, lyrics, structure, etc.?
