Due: BY April 22 at noon on Blackboard Word format only.
Format: 9 -12 pages double spaced. You also must use required headings for all sections described later in this document. If you use quotes or paraphrase material from the book (or course readings), you must cite your sources! If you do not, then that would be considered plagiarism.
This book in general, covers topics we have not discussed in class. The objective of this assignment is for you to apply the sociological tools youve acquired from the course (your knowledge of concepts and readings) to new/different areas. You must:
Use at least 3 course readings – including readings covered early in the course that may be more conceptual but are related in some way to your specific topic. By use, I mean you should identify, define, and discuss key concepts in these articles; use relevant quotes; and feature the readings in your discussion (your discussion of the readings should not be a minor part of your paper.) Do not use long quotes in order to fill up space!
1.Class 5_Starr transformation of American Medicine
2.Stake holder mobilization
3.Vogel_Pharma Versus Farmer
4.Class 15_Fielding_changing medical practice and medical malpractice claims
5.Food Rx A Community University Partnership to Prescribe Healthy Eating on the South Side of Chicago
6.Class 18_Sered & Fernandopulle_Young sick and part_time
Identify 2 main sociological concepts covered in this course which you will use to structure your analysis that is, you should build an argument/analysis around those central concepts, and come back to these concepts throughout your entire paper. They will be central to what you have to say. Note: Although you will use the terms in your writing, sociology and sociological imagination are NOT sociological concepts which you may count toward this requirement. Be sure these concepts come from this course!
These are all the sociological concepts I thought would be useful for this paper. I highlighted the concepts I would like you to use, however feel free to use the ones that seem most relatable and easy to integrate into the paper.
1.Corporatization
2.Countervailing powers
3.Social equity
4.Biography; and Social identity
5.Class, status, power
6.Randall: symbolic goods and emotional solidarity
7.Conflict theory
In addition, identify another 3 sociological concepts from this course which are relevant, but less central than your main concepts. Note: Similar to the above, although you will use the terms in your writing, sociology and sociological imagination are NOT sociological concepts which you may count toward this requirement.
1.Corporatization
2.Countervailing powers
3.Social equity
4.Biography; and Social identity
5.Class, status, power
6.Randall: symbolic goods and emotional solidarity
7.Conflict theory
Note: I do NOT want you to use/repeat content from book reviews. I am familiar with published reviews of these books. If you have happened to already have read a book review, you must a) cite it in your bibliography; b) use quotation marks to indicate any direct quotes; and/or c) include in-text references if you paraphrase the critics ideas. Failure to do so will result in a 0 for this paper.
Required Outline
The format of the paper is as follows. You must use the required headings (in bold text below) so that I can see where one section ends and another begins.
1.Overview: Briefly summarize what the book covers. Assume that the reader is basically familiar with the content of the book. Conclude by identifying the 2 central sociological concepts and 3 other sociological concepts which you will use to analyze the book. This section should be no more than 1 page.
2.Sociological Contributions: Explain in what ways this book is intended to be sociological. What does the author wish to address? Why is it important to study in sociology? Do not include your assessment of whether or not the author accomplished this in this section. You will write about this later. (Approximately to1 page)
3.Conceptual/Theoretical Orientation: Identify, define, and discuss 2 main concepts from this course which are relevant to the content of this book. Explicitly identify what your concepts are. Use definitions from course readings to begin to explain them. Briefly discuss how these concepts are used in the book. Does the author(s) share those definitions or do they use different definitions? In a separate paragraph(s): If you can identify the theoretical orientation of the author, do so and assess whether or not it is appropriate for the topic why or why not. (Approximately to 1 page)
4.Analysis: While the content of the analysis will vary based on both the book and concepts you have selected, you should use your sociological imagination to explore how complete and sociological the authors analysis is of the issue covered in the book. (4-6 pages; be sure to address items a and b, below, in addition to any issues which you think are important given your topic and concepts)
a.Was the analysis thorough? Consistent? What depth, if any, does the book make to what we already know about the topic?
b.Also reflect on whether or not the book is good sociology. Does it meet your basic requirements for a sociological analysis? Be sure to define what sociology is and why you think (or dont think) the book meets those expectations.
Note: Be sure to focus your analysis on your 2 main sociological concepts, but also include the 3 others you have identified from this course.
Also be sure to analyze the entire book do not focus on one chapter or only on the summary chapter.
5.Personal reflection: What did you personally learn as a result of reading this book? Did you expect to gain that type of knowledge or was it a surprise? Be as concrete and detailed as you feel comfortable being, but be sure to relate your discussion about what you learned from this book to at least one of the course goals on the syllabus. If your personal reflection does not relate to a course goal, that is fine, but at least consult the syllabus to see whether or not it corresponds to a stated goal. (Approximately1 page)
6.Conclusions: What would you change if you were conducting the research and/or writing the book? What do you think the lessons learned are for sociology, as well as our health care system? As part of your discussion, consider what we have learned about the issue that informs our academic social science knowledge (sociology), and what , if anything, we have learned about what to do about it (social policy)? (Minimum of 1 pages)
7.Bibliography: Include a bibliography of all sources you have used for the paper; and use a standard format. While you may use any standard style you wish (e.g. ASA, MLA, APA, etc), points will be deducted if your formatting is not a standard one and is not consistent. (Bibliography is NOT included in the page count)
