The Similarities and Differences of the Past and the New Thirty Years’ War

As observed in the “Thirty Years’ War” (1618-1648) class discussion and the “Thirty Years’ War” article written by Klare (2011), there are significant similarities and differences between the two that are worth highlighting in this journal. Therefore, a critical analysis of both the class discussion and Klare’s article reveals several issues on which they are similar. For instance, it is universally accepted that in both thirty years’ wars the main motive is a struggle for power through expansion of dominance (territory/political) and becoming leaders in alternatives to conventional sources of energy in the past and future thirty years’ wars respectively (Klare, 2011). This will lead to both winners and losers in the future war as it was in the past. Moreover, national security concern is a similarity due to struggle for natural resources where in past it was mainly the coal while in the future it will be Lithium and Nickel (due to need for electric-powered cars) leading to armed violence, thus bloodshed is a similarity. As in the past great nation-states emerged while in the future giant corporations in wealth and importance and new energy universe shall emerge (Klare, 2011). Furthermore, as the Treaty of Westphalia was signed in 1948 to end the war between 1618 and 1648 in Europe, a treaty of similar sort shall also need to be signed to bring peace between the winners and losers of the thirty years’ war between 2011 and 2041 (Klare, 2011).

However, several differences have been noted between the two, first, the past war began as a religious war between Protestants and Catholics while the future war has began as a struggle to take lead in providing alternatives to conventional sources of energy. There will also be difference in the extent of bloodshed between the two wars (Klare, 2011). Moreover, as the concern in the past war was dynasty expansion and political dominance, the concern in future will be to seek for alternatives to conventional sources of energy due to eventual oil scarcity and global climate change. In addition, energy efficiency was not a concern in the past war due to abundance, but in the future energy efficiency shall be vital to determine the winners and losers. Finally, I believe this war has the potential to offer appropriate energy solutions.
