Re:Topic 1 DQ 1

The capstone project that I am interested in doing is readmission prevention. I was able to input this subject in the CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) database and it came up with over 7,000 different results. I was then able to refine my search to about 1700 articles related to this subject. CINAHL databases are the most widely-used and respected research tools for nurses, students and allied health professionals around the globe (). This information will let me develop a detailed capstone project to help others in preventing readmission of patients. New regulations from insurance companies are preventing reimbursements for healthcare facilities from readmissions within 30 days of discharge. Today’s healthcare is on preventative care and education is a large part of the transition. Hopefully through researching this subject, educating nurses on preventative measures for patients will reduce the amount of readmissions of patients with the same ailments. This includes databases on readmission statistics and numerical data, staff development, and nursing personnel education. These journals will help develop ways to prevent readmission for the nurses to teach the patients.

Re:Topic 1 DQ 2

When searching for research that applies to your topic you can narrow the search by selecting limiters such as “peer review”, “scholarly journals”, creating specific dates, and choosing whether you want full text or just the abstract. Eliminating the specific terms and using more general terms in relation to the topic can broaden the search. Advantages to this are it helps sort thought the research that is not relevant as there is a ton of research available. The disadvantage is that there may be great research that is missed due to wording. The good think is you can always change the wording with in the subject lines to improve or change some of the research that the site finds relevant. Often when you restrict to just “full text” journals you may miss relevant journals, which are actually available on other databases. If the journal is not found you can always submit a request to the librarian and they can help retrieve the article from different institutions.
When searching thought Lope Search at the GCU online library, there are several rows to which you can add key words. For instance when searching this afternoon I entered “Driving” into the first subject area. I then checked the box “All Subjects” and selected “Nursing & Health Science”. Next I checked the “Peer Review” box and then selected search. Once in, in the second subject box I put in the word “opioid” and then in the 3rd box I entered “adverse effects”. At this point I was able to narrow my search to the last five years and find the most relevant research for my topic.
